トラベルガイド
出発前に知っておくべきすべてのこと。
The honest summary: Wolverhampton is a Black Country city of about 281,000 people (ONS mid-2025 estimate), 16 minutes by train from Birmingham. Its gay scene is small: one dedicated gay club, Gorgeous on School Street; one big gay men's sauna, The Greenhouse, out in Darlaston; an active LGBT+ charity a few doors from the club; and a council-run Pride that drew its biggest crowd yet in June 2026. There's no gay village and no weekly drag pub that we could confirm. Most locals who want a choice of bars head to Birmingham's Gay Village around Hurst Street, which is an easy train or tram ride away. This guide covers what exists in Wolverhampton itself, what has closed, and how to get to Birmingham and back.
Legal in one line: Sex between men was partly decriminalised in England in 1967, the age of consent was equalised at 16 in 2001, civil partnerships arrived in 2005 and same-sex marriage in England and Wales on 29 March 2014. The Equality Act 2010 bans discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender reassignment. A ban on conversion practices isn't law yet; the government published a draft bill on 25 June 2026 and it still has to go through Parliament.
Gorgeous Nightclub, 34-36 School Street (WV1 4LF), is the one place in Wolverhampton that calls itself gay. The Gorgeous name started at the New Inn in 2009 and moved into the former Pepitos restaurant on School Street in 2010. Travel Gay lists it as the city's only gay bar and club, with free entry before 1am on Friday and Saturday. It was the official pre-party venue for Wolverhampton Pride in 2024 and a Pride partner in 2025. Two things to know before you go. First, not every night is a queer night: its Instagram bills it as home of the city's biggest afterparty, and some ticketed nights are general club events. Second, planning permission granted in January 2023 for flats on the Beatties car park and the club's site means Gorgeous is due to move to a new unit within the redevelopment; no date has been set. Check @gorgeousnightclub on Instagram for the current line-up.
The White Hart, 66 Worcester Street, reopened in December 2022 as an LGBTQ+ pub with a drag cabaret, hosted Pride parties in 2024 and was a Pride partner in 2025. By autumn 2025 one listings site showed it as closed while local press still described it as trading, and it isn't among the 2026 Pride partners. We couldn't confirm it's open, so we don't list it. Look at its Facebook page before you make a trip.
Drag and queer nights pop up in ordinary venues rather than at a fixed home. Drag Bingo at Goodyears Pavilion, a social club on Stafford Road, is listed on Skiddle for Saturday 21 November 2026. The Royal London pub hosted a Wolverhampton LGBT+ fundraiser in October. Treat these as one-off events, not gay venues.

The Greenhouse Sauna, Willenhall Road, Darlaston (WS10 8JG), is about 8 km south-east of Wolverhampton city centre, close to junction 10 of the M6, with free parking. It's in Walsall borough rather than Wolverhampton, but it's the sauna the whole western Black Country uses. It belongs to the same group as the Greenhouse saunas in Luton and Newport, and its website calls it the largest gay and bisexual men's sauna in the Midlands. Listings describe four floors with an indoor pool, steam rooms, a dry sauna, relaxation lounges, a dance room and a café-bar. Directory hours are 10:00 to midnight Sunday to Thursday and 10:00 to 04:00 on Friday and Saturday. Photo ID (a driving licence or passport) is now required from every visitor. It's men only.
We couldn't find any cruising area in Wolverhampton documented on two or more current sources, so we don't list one. Cruising isn't illegal in England, but sexual activity where others can see it is an offence. Most people meet through the apps.

Wolverhampton LGBT+ is a registered charity based at Pride House, 27 School Street, a few doors from Gorgeous. It has run counselling, yoga, twice-weekly coffee meet-ups, a monthly walking group and online socials since 2016, and it's the best first contact if you've just moved to the city. X2Y LGBT Youth Group runs groups for ages 11 to 17 and 18 to 25 across Wolverhampton and the Black Country. The University of Wolverhampton Students' Union has an LGBTQIA+ society with weekly coffee meet-ups and socials.
For sexual health, Embrace is the NHS service run by the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, with clinics at the Fowler Centre at New Cross Hospital, at West Park Hospital and at Bilston Health Centre. It offers free HIV and STI testing and PrEP; book on 01902 444444.
Wolverhampton Pride is run by City of Wolverhampton Council with Enjoy Wolverhampton, Wolverhampton LGBT+, X2Y, the Grand Theatre and other partners. It returned in 2023 after a four-year break. The 2024 weekend ran from 7 to 9 June with the main event in Market Square, and in 2025 it was on Saturday 7 June in the Old Market Square with a picnic in West Park the next day. In 2026 it moved to West Park on Saturday 6 June, 14:00 to 20:00, because the Old Market Square is being redeveloped. Tickets were first priced at £10, then sponsorship made entry free, and the council reported more than 1,000 people in the parade and over 5,000 in the park. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing; watch pridewton.co.uk. Birmingham Pride, one of the UK's largest, is usually held over the late May bank holiday weekend.
The Mercure Wolverhampton Goldthorn Hotel on Penn Road has closed; demolition was approved in 2023 and the site has been sold to Lidl, though some booking sites still list it. The Prince Albert on Railway Street, once a gay pub, and the Silver Web are long gone. The Flamingo Club on Cross Street North, opened in 1965, is part of the city's history rather than its nightlife. The New Inn was Gorgeous's first home in 2009 and 2010. The Light House was a cinema and media centre, never a hotel; it reopened in July 2025 as Lockworks Cinema.
Wolverhampton station has direct trains to Birmingham New Street, fastest in 16 minutes and about 27 on average, and to London Euston in about two hours (fastest around 1 hour 49). West Midlands Metro Line 1 runs between Wolverhampton and Birmingham city centre roughly every 15 minutes and takes about 55 minutes end to end. Birmingham Airport (BHX) is about 30 km away, just over half an hour by direct train via Birmingham International. Birmingham's Gay Village around Hurst Street is roughly 30 to 40 minutes door to door from central Wolverhampton by train. Check the last train or tram home before a big night in Birmingham.
For the club and the station, the city-centre options are Premier Inn Wolverhampton City Centre on Broad Gauge Way next to the station, Novotel Wolverhampton on Union Street and the Garner Hotel on Waterloo Road by Molineux, which reopened under IHG in May 2025. Along Tettenhall Road, west of the centre, there are smaller independents: the Ely House Hotel and The Connaught Hotel. Further out are the Holiday Inn at Dunstall Park racecourse, Park Hall Hotel and Spa in Goldthorn Park, and The Mount Hotel in Tettenhall Wood. None of these is a gay hotel; they're ordinary hotels where a same-sex couple shouldn't draw any attention.
Gorgeous is busiest late on Friday and Saturday, so a Birmingham warm-up and a train back before midnight doesn't really work; plan either a Wolverhampton night or a Birmingham night. The Greenhouse is hard to reach without a car late at night; a taxi from the city centre takes around 15 minutes. Report hate crime to West Midlands Police on 101 (999 in an emergency) or online through True Vision.
Black Country speech is famously its own thing. "Ow am ya?" means "How are you?", "bostin" means great, and "yow" is you. You'll hear it in pubs more than in the club.

Yes, one. Gorgeous Nightclub at 34-36 School Street in the city centre is Wolverhampton's only dedicated gay club, with late nights on Friday and Saturday and free entry before 1am. Some nights are general club events, so check its Instagram first. The White Hart on Worcester Street ran as an LGBTQ+ pub from 2022, but we couldn't confirm it's still open.
Yes. The Greenhouse Sauna on Willenhall Road in Darlaston, about 8 km south-east of the city centre near M6 junction 10, is a large sauna for gay and bisexual men: four floors, an indoor pool, steam rooms and a café-bar. Listed hours are 10:00 to midnight, and to 04:00 on Friday and Saturday. Bring photo ID; it's now required.
Wolverhampton Pride is held in early June and run by the city council. In 2026 it was on Saturday 6 June in West Park, free to enter, with more than 5,000 people in the park. The 2025 edition was on 7 June in the Old Market Square. The 2027 date hadn't been announced in October 2026; check pridewton.co.uk.

Trains from Wolverhampton to Birmingham New Street take 16 to 27 minutes and run frequently; the Gay Village around Hurst Street is a short walk from New Street. The West Midlands Metro tram also links the two city centres in about 55 minutes. Check the last train home before a late night.
Same-sex relationships and marriage are fully legal in England, and the Equality Act 2010 protects against discrimination. Wolverhampton is a diverse city where a same-sex couple rarely draws attention, but use the usual late-night sense in the centre. Report hate crime to West Midlands Police on 101 (999 in an emergency) or online through True Vision. Wolverhampton LGBT+ at Pride House on School Street offers support.
