Last verified: October 2026. St. Pete has more genuinely gay places to sleep than most American cities of 260,000 people, but only one of them is in the gay district. That one is the Mari Jean, a 15-room hotel for adults only (21 and over) on Central Avenue. It opened in June 2023 and is run by David Fischer, the man behind Cocktail, the gay bar in its lobby. The rest are small clothing-optional guesthouses on residential streets west of Grand Central: Casa del Merman at GayStPete House (open since 2008), Gay Paradise Suites, and Villa da Costa further out. From all three you will want a car or a rideshare to reach the bars. Everything else is mainstream. That means boutique and serviced-apartment hotels downtown, about 20 minutes on foot from Enigma and 40 or more from Grand Central. We found no gay hotel closures in 2025 or 2026. This guide covers where to sleep so you can walk home, who is men-only or clothing-optional this year, the 13% room tax, the unusual position St Pete Pride is in for 2027, Winter Pride in February 2027, and how to get back at 3 am.
Pick by trip style
| Stay style | Hotels | Walk to Grand Central (Cocktail, 2355 Central Ave) | Walk to Enigma (1110 Central Ave, EDGE District) | Who it suits and the watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gay-owned, on the strip | Mari Jean Hotel | Under 1 min (Cocktail is the lobby bar) | 23–26 min, or a short rideshare | Bar-hoppers who want the pool party downstairs. Watch-out: 21+, noise near the bar and pool, and guests note there's no gym. |
| Men's clothing-optional guesthouses | Casa del Merman at GayStPete House, Gay Paradise Suites St. Pete | 38–40 min and 28–30 min to the nearest bar. In practice, a 5–10 min drive | Over an hour. Take a car | Men who want a social pool and a host who knows the scene. Watch-out: quiet residential streets, so budget for rideshares every night. |
| Serviced apartments at the EDGE | Mint House St. Petersburg Downtown by Kasa | 23–25 min | 2–3 min | Groups and Pride crews who want kitchens. Watch-out: digital check-in and very little front desk. |
| Downtown boutique with a pool | Hollander Hotel, Avalon Hotel | 40–43 min | 19–22 min | Pride weekend (the waterfront is 16–18 min away) and couples who want museums by day. Watch-out: you'll take a car to Grand Central. |
| Downtown core and Old Northeast | The Ponce De Leon Hotel, Prestige Collection | 48–52 min | 26–31 min | People walking to the Pride parade. Watch-out: live music under the Ponce's rooms, and self-service check-in at Prestige. |
| Budget motel | Uptown Inn & Suites | 40–42 min | 28–30 min | A last resort when everything else is sold out. Watch-out: a 2.7 Google average. |
| Out of town | Villa da Costa (46th Ave N); Treasure Island beach hotels | Drive | Drive | Weekly stays, and beach days at Sunset Beach. Watch-out: you need a car, full stop. |
Where to sleep, in real minutes
St. Pete's gay life runs along one road. Central Avenue goes straight west from the waterfront, and the queer bars cluster in two places on it. The main one is the Grand Central District, roughly 20th to 28th Streets. There you'll find Cocktail and its Wet Spot pool club at 2355, Dog Bar (a mixed bar where you can bring your dog) at 2300, The Garage On Central at 2729 and Lucky Star Lounge at 2760. A slow walk from one end to the other takes about 10 minutes. The second spot is Enigma, alone at 1110 Central in the EDGE District. It's the nearest thing St. Pete has to a dance club, with drag on Fridays. Enigma is about 1.5 km east of Cocktail, so 23–26 minutes on foot. Downtown and the Pride waterfront are another 1 km or so further east.
So the rule is simple. If the bars are the point of the trip, sleep in Grand Central. That really means the Mari Jean, or a short-term rental in Kenwood, the residential grid just north of Central. For a downtown trip with one night at the bars, stay downtown and take a rideshare. Don't plan on walking the full 3 km from Beach Drive to Grand Central at 2 am. It's flat and mostly lit, but it's long, and some blocks in between go quiet once the restaurants close.

Grand Central District (Central Ave, 20th–28th Streets)
The Mari Jean at 2349 Central dates from 1926 and is the only hotel actually in the gay district. Cocktail is in the lobby, the Wet Spot pool is next door, and The Ball, a small disco bar, belongs to the same complex. The Garage and Lucky Star are 7–9 minutes west along Central. Metro Inclusive Health is at 2237, 2 minutes east. Noise comes with the location. The hotel itself says its quietest rooms are the "preferred" categories booked on its own website, which other sites usually call Superior. Book one of those if you plan to sleep before 2 am. At 3 am, Central itself is the street to walk. It's lit, the bars spill onto it at closing time, and rideshares queue there. The streets either side are residential and dark, and there's nothing on them you need.
EDGE District (Central Ave, around 9th–16th Streets)
Mint House by Kasa at 77 11th St N is a block from Enigma (2–3 minutes). It's the best-placed mainstream option if you want both the club and downtown on foot. Downtown restaurants are 10–15 minutes east and the Pride waterfront about 16 minutes. Grand Central is 23–25 minutes west along Central, which is fine on a Saturday evening and less fun at closing time. The apartments have kitchens and the check-in is digital. That suits a group splitting a unit for Pride. It suits you less if you want someone at a desk when your key code fails at 3 am.

Downtown and the waterfront
The two strongest mainstream hotels sit next to each other on 4th Avenue North. The Hollander (421 4th Ave N, 4.7 from about 3,200 Google reviews) has a pool bar that locals use at weekends. The Avalon (443 4th Ave N, 4.5 from about 950 reviews) pours free wine in the lobby in the evening. Both are 19–22 minutes from Enigma and 40–43 minutes from Grand Central, and 16–18 minutes from the Bayshore Drive parks where Pride happens. The Ponce De Leon at 95 Central is the closest of the hotels we list to the parade route (12–14 minutes). But it averages 3.4 from about 1,700 reviews, and the tapas bar downstairs has live music, so ask for a high room away from the street. Prestige Collection (115 5th Ave NE) is on the Old Northeast side. It's quiet and rated 4.9, but it's 50 minutes from the gay bars on foot. Confirm how check-in works before you arrive. Uptown Inn & Suites, north of downtown at 1503 9th St N, has a 2.7 average and no website on file. We don't recommend it unless the city is full.
West of Grand Central: the guesthouse belt
Casa del Merman is at 4505 5th Ave N in Central Oak Park, in a 1920s house. Gay Paradise Suites is at 4062 1st Ave S, south of Central. Both are quiet residential streets with no foot traffic at night. On paper, Gay Paradise is 28–30 minutes' walk from Lucky Star and Casa del Merman 38–40 minutes. Nobody does that walk twice. Take a rideshare: it's a 5–10 minute drive. The upside is that both are 20–25 minutes by car from Sunset Beach, which is closer than downtown is.

The beaches
Sunset Beach at the south tip of Treasure Island is the Tampa Bay area's gay beach. The gay stretch runs from just south of 80th Terrace to the jetties at land's end. Hurricanes Helene and Milton put Treasure Island underwater in 2024. The Sunset Beach Pavilion was rebuilt and reopened on 4 June 2026, and the beach has been eroded. None of the beach hotels on the island is gay-run, and we don't list any of them. If you base yourself there, you're 25 minutes or more by car from the bars and you'll drive every night.
Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional
Mari Jean Hotel (gay-owned, 21+, not men-only). Visit St. Pete-Clearwater lists it as the city's adults-only gay hotel, and it's owned by the Cocktail team. It now sells itself on booking sites as "All Adults Welcome", and women and straight couples do stay. Clothes stay on. The Wet Spot works as a day club, so the pool area is open to people who aren't staying at the hotel. Expect a crowd on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and don't expect it to be private. It's the gay-owned hotel, but not a men-only retreat.
Casa del Merman at GayStPete House (gay-run, clothing-optional). It has run since 2008, with six rooms, each with its own entrance and bathroom. There's a heated pool, a hot tub and a sauna, plus free parking and no resort fee. Most third-party guides still call it men-only. Its own page now says all are welcome from age 18, and it sells day passes, so non-guests will be at the pool. In practice the crowd is mostly men, and reviewers describe a sociable naturist house, not a cruising venue. Its rooms were listed at about US$130 a night in 2026, but confirm before you book.
Gay Paradise Suites (men, clothing-optional). These are themed suites with full kitchens and private bathrooms around a hot tub and a shallow pool. It works more like a vacation rental than a B&B, and it's listed on misterb&b as clothing-optional. It has advertised day passes and evening events for men (hot-tub happy hours, foam nights). That makes it lively on event nights and not the place for a quiet anniversary. It was still taking bookings in 2025–2026 listings. Check the house rules and whether non-guests will be around before you book.
Villa da Costa (men, nude pool). A 16-unit motel on a private road at 7555 46th Ave N, well north-west of Grand Central. It markets itself as St. Pete's gay men's resort and nude pool club and mostly sells weekly and monthly stays with kitchens. It's for long stays, and only if you're driving. We don't list it, and recent reviews are thin, so confirm the current set-up before you book.
If none of those suits, Casa Puente in Tampa is an all-male, clothing-optional guesthouse on two gated acres, about 40 minutes away. We haven't checked its 2026 status. There's no gay bathhouse among the venues we list in St. Pete. Casa del Merman's sauna belongs to the guesthouse, not a public club.
The older St. Pete hotel guides that called the EDGE District the gay hub got it wrong. Grand Central has been the centre since the bars moved there, and it has stayed that way.

Booking rules that bite
- Tax: 13% on top of the room rate. That's Florida's 6% sales tax, plus Pinellas County's 1% surtax, plus the county's 6% tourist development ("bed") tax. It applies to stays under six months, and rental cleaning fees are taxed too. Look at the total, not the nightly rate.
- Resort and amenity fees. Some downtown hotels add a nightly fee at checkout, and it's taxed as well. Casa del Merman says it charges none. Check the final screen before paying for anywhere else.
- Parking. The guesthouses park you free. Downtown hotels usually charge or use paid garages, so confirm the nightly rate if you're driving from the airport.
- Visitors. US hotels don't charge joiner fees, and nobody at a mainstream front desk will ask who you come in with. The guesthouses are different: they're small and run by their owners, and day-pass and visitor rules vary. Ask before you bring someone back to the pool.
- The golden tip. If two of you are staying, book two guests from the start. That gets the right number of keys at a Kasa or self-check-in property. At the guesthouses, a second guest who isn't registered may run into day-pass rules.
- Age and ID. The Mari Jean is 21+, and the person checking in needs government photo ID and a card for the deposit. The guesthouses are 18+.
- Hurricane season (1 June to 30 November). October 2026 showed why this matters. Tampa Bay escaped the worst of Hurricane Isaias, but rip currents closed the sea along the Pinellas coast. Pay a little more for a refundable rate between August and October, and check the cancellation terms on prepaid rentals.
The gay calendar and where to book for it

Winter Pride Saint Pete: 14–21 February 2027
The organisers have confirmed a week of events. A drag race takes over Central Avenue outside Cocktail (2355 Central) on Saturday 20 February, 11 am to 5 pm. The street festival follows on Sunday 21 February, noon to 5 pm, on Central between 22nd and 25th Streets, with an afterglow party that night. Cynthia Nixon is due to lead a mass wedding and vow-renewal ceremony for women during the week. Everything happens in Grand Central, so the Mari Jean, which is literally on the route, will go first. Book it as soon as you know your dates. Kenwood rentals and the west-side guesthouses come next, a short rideshare away. Downtown hotels work too, as February is high season anyway.
St Pete Pride: 2027 dates TBA
The organisers haven't announced 2027 dates as of October 2026. St Pete Pride is normally the last weekend of June. The 2026 edition ran from 26 to 28 June, and the parade drew about 300,000 people. The main events are on the downtown waterfront: the parade on Bayshore Drive and the festival in Vinoy and North Straub Parks. They're not in Grand Central. 2027 is the 25th anniversary, but there's a catch. In October 2026 the non-profit said it needs about US$289,000 by 30 November to pay off 2026 costs before it can commit to 2027. Its president has said the next edition may be smaller than usual. Don't prepay anything non-refundable until dates and plans are published.
Where to book: the Hollander, Avalon and Ponce De Leon put you 12–18 minutes from the parade. Mint House sits between the parade and Enigma. The Mari Jean is 40 minutes from the waterfront on foot but at the centre of the after-parties. In past years, downtown rooms for Pride weekend have filled months ahead, so book when the dates appear.

Elsewhere in Tampa Bay
Tampa Pride in Ybor City usually falls in spring. We couldn't verify the 2027 dates, so check with the organisers before you plan around it.
Getting back at 3 am
From the airports. St. Pete-Clearwater International (PIE) is the closer airport, roughly 25–30 minutes by car. Tampa International (TPA) has far more flights and is roughly 35–45 minutes away over the bay, longer at rush hour. Rideshare fares change a lot with demand, so check the quote in the app before you land. Public transport from either airport is slow and limited. Check PSTA's current timetable before you rely on it.
From the bars. Uber and Lyft are the real night transport, and Central Avenue is where to call one, at the bar door. PSTA runs buses and the SunRunner along the 1st Avenue corridor between downtown and the beaches, but we couldn't confirm late-night hours. Treat transit as an evening option, not a 3 am one. Downtown to Grand Central is a short rideshare. From Grand Central to the west-side guesthouses takes 5–10 minutes.
Walking. Within Grand Central, walk Central Avenue itself. Between Enigma and Grand Central, Central passes under the interstate and has quiet blocks. Groups walk it in the evening. Alone after closing, take a car. The guesthouse streets are fine to stand on while you wait for your ride, but they're unlit and empty, so book the car before you leave the bar.

Health, safety and the law
Sexual health. Metro Inclusive Health has been the area's LGBTQ health non-profit since the early 1990s. Its pharmacy and health site are on Central Avenue at numbers 2235–2237, 2 minutes' walk from the Mari Jean. It offers free HIV testing, same-day STI testing and fast-tracked PrEP and nPEP. Its old 3251 3rd Ave N site is shown as closed, so call ahead to confirm where to go and the hours. Most sites are closed at weekends. If you need PEP on a Saturday night, go to a hospital emergency department. PEP works best started within hours and must be started within 72.
App dates. We found no reported 2025–2026 pattern of dating-app robberies aimed at gay men in St. Pete. The usual rules still apply. Meet at the bar first, and give the person who's coming over your room number, not the hotel's whole layout. At the guesthouses, tell the host if someone is visiting.
The law. Same-sex relationships and marriage are legal nationwide, and hotels and bars present no problems. In practice, St. Pete is one of the most openly gay cities in Florida. Florida itself is more mixed. The state has passed laws aimed at drag and at trans people in recent years. A 2023 law restricts restroom use in government-owned buildings, which trans travellers should read up on. A state law limiting public funding for DEI programmes helped cause Pride's 2026 sponsorship shortfall. Drag shows continue nightly in the Grand Central bars.
Drugs and cannabis. Recreational cannabis is illegal in Florida, and the medical programme doesn't recognise out-of-state cards. Possession of other drugs is usually a felony charge. Hotels will call the police over drug use in rooms, and the smoke-cleaning fees run to hundreds of dollars. Smoking is banned indoors in restaurants and most workplaces. Several Pinellas beach towns restrict smoking on the sand, so read the signs at Sunset Beach.
Weather. Heat and lightning are the everyday risks from June to September. Rip-current warnings after storms are not a formality.
Three picks

Budget: Casa del Merman at GayStPete House
Rooms were about US$130 a night in 2026 listings, and parking is free with no resort fee. It has the longest-running gay host in town and a clothing-optional heated pool. You'll pay for rideshares to the bars, but it's still cheaper than downtown, and Sunset Beach is closer.
Mid-range: Mari Jean Hotel
It's the only hotel where the gay bar, the pool party and Winter Pride's street festival are all downstairs. Book a "preferred" room direct for the quietest options. Rates jump on Winter Pride and Pride weekends, so confirm them early.

Splurge: Hollander Hotel
The best-reviewed full-service hotel we list, with a spa and a pool bar. It's 16–18 minutes from the Pride parade route and 20 minutes from Enigma. It's for a downtown, museums-and-waterfront trip with one big night out by car. Rates on Pride weekend were unverified when we checked.
Frequently asked
Is the Mari Jean a gay hotel?
Yes, in ownership and atmosphere: it's run by the Cocktail team, and the gay bar is its lobby. But it's 21+ for all adults, not men-only, and clothes stay on.
Is there a men-only or clothing-optional hotel in St. Pete?
Three, all west of Grand Central and best reached by car: Gay Paradise Suites, Villa da Costa and Casa del Merman. Casa del Merman now says it welcomes all adults 18+. Check the current policy and day-pass rules before you book.
Which hotel is closest to the gay bars?
The Mari Jean, at 2349 Central Ave. Cocktail is in the same building and The Garage and Lucky Star are 7–9 minutes away. For Enigma, Mint House by Kasa is 2–3 minutes away.
Is there a gay beach near St. Petersburg?
Yes. It's the south end of Sunset Beach on Treasure Island, from just south of 80th Terrace to the jetties, 20–25 minutes by car from the guesthouses. The pavilion reopened in June 2026 after the 2024 hurricanes.
How much is hotel tax in St. Petersburg?
13% in total: 6% state sales tax, 1% Pinellas surtax and the 6% county bed tax. Any resort or amenity fee is taxed too.
Can I bring a guest back to my hotel?
Mainstream hotels don't charge visitor fees or register visitors. At the small gay guesthouses, ask about visitor and day-pass rules first. If you're sharing, register both names at booking.
When is St Pete Pride 2027?
The organisers haven't announced it as of October 2026. It's usually the last weekend of June on the downtown waterfront, and the organisers are fundraising to secure the 25th-anniversary edition.
