Gay João Pessoa: The Honest 2026 Guide

The honest summary: João Pessoa is a relaxed, mid-sized beach capital with a small gay scene and no gay district. In 2026 we can point you to one gay sauna in the old centre (Thermas Parahyba), one long-running gay bar (Donana Pub, also in the centre, though we couldn't find recent proof that it's still trading) and one mixed café-club in Tambaú (Empório Café) where LGBT locals go for karaoke and party nights. The rest of the queer calendar is street parties, ballroom nights and a Pride parade on the seafront whose date moves from year to year. Most visitors come for the calm urban beaches, the colonial centre and day trips down the coast. Plan on a quiet trip. Recife, two hours south, has a much bigger gay scene.

Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal across Brazil since the CNJ resolution of May 2013. Since the Supreme Court ruling of June 2019, homophobia and transphobia are punished under the national racism law. Paraíba state law has banned discrimination by sexual orientation since 2003 (Law 7.309), and a 2017 law (10.909) added gender identity.

Where the scene is

There's no gay neighbourhood, and no three sources we checked agree on one. The few queer places split between two parts of town. The Centro and Centro Histórico, inland by the Sanhauá river, has the sauna, Donana Pub and the street parties around Avenida General Osório. The beach districts along the coast run north to south: Bessa, Manaíra, Tambaú and Cabo Branco. This is where nearly all hotels are, where Empório Café is and where Pride marches. The two areas are about 7 km apart, so plan on app rides (Uber and 99 both work) between them, especially at night.

Bars and clubs

Donana Pub, Av. Almirante Barroso 566, Centro. This is the name every local LGBT guide gives as the city's gay bar. A 2019 local guide called it the main LGBT spot, and the Andapride map lists it as an LGBT+ bar. It has an air-conditioned dance floor playing forró, brega and sertanejo, an outdoor area, live shows and usually free entry. Listings show Friday to Sunday from 9 pm to 1 am. The catch: the newest review we found is from June 2025, and we couldn't find anything dated 2026. Check its Instagram (@donanapubjp) before you go.

Empório Café, Rua Coração de Jesus 145, Tambaú. A café by day and a karaoke bar and club at night, behind the Feirinha de Tambaú and a block from the beach. It isn't a gay bar and the crowd is mixed. Still, Melhores Destinos lists it among the city's LGBTQIAPN+ venues, and reviewers keep calling its party nights the best LGBT night out in town. It has two dance floors and a terrace. Listings show Tuesday to Thursday until 2 am and Friday to Sunday until 5 am. If you're staying by the beach, this is the easy option.

Parties rather than bars. A lot of queer nightlife here happens as events, not in fixed venues. 08Centro is a free LGBTQIAPN+-centred street rave in the Centro Histórico, around Avenida General Osório. A União covered it in 2023 and it was still running in 2025. The city also has an active ballroom scene: Coletivo Fuzz (@ladeirafuzz) ran the Circuito Ballroom Parahyba in March 2026. Follow the organisers on Instagram for dates, since none of these run on a fixed calendar.

Couldn't confirm

We found older or single-source mentions of a few other places and left them out: Auê Pub (a Facebook page only, no address), Recanto Jampa in Manaíra (known for LGBT-only hiring in 2023, but it doesn't present itself as an LGBT bar) and the bear party Jampa Bear (we couldn't confirm a venue). Some international sites list a "hottest gay bar" called Estação Café Brasil. We found nothing to back that up.

Gone but still Googled

Hera Bárbara, the big LGBT club and karaoke bar on Rua Maciel Pinheiro in Varadouro, had a fire in August 2019 and is now listed as permanently closed. Several "gay bars in João Pessoa" lists online include names like Vogue, Clube Metrópole, Confraria dos Ursos and Santo Bar. We couldn't tie any of them to this city. Clube Metrópole, for example, is in Recife.

Saunas

Thermas Parahyba, Rua Duque de Caxias 8, Centro, near the São Francisco church. The Andapride map calls it the only gay sauna in Paraíba, and its own website calls it the best one. The site lists a dry sauna and a steam room, a bar, a video room, a dark room, a rest room and private cabins. Hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 4 pm to 10 pm, until 11 pm on Saturdays and holidays, closed on Mondays. Entry is R$35 on weekdays and R$45 at weekends, and massages cost R$60–150. One older blog post mentions a second sauna, Termas Solar do Poente in Manaíra, but we found no address or any other trace of it.

Cruising

We don't list any outdoor cruising areas for João Pessoa. The only source naming parks or beach stretches is an academic study based on fieldwork from 2012–14, and nothing current backs it up. An old porn cinema near the Theatro Santa Roza (Cine Phoenix, formerly Cine Sex América) shows up in that same research, but we found no evidence it's still open. Public sex is an offence in Brazil (ato obsceno). Most men here meet on Grindr and similar apps. Meet somewhere public first, and don't arrange to meet on an empty beachfront at night.

Beaches

None of the city beaches has a recognised gay section. Tambaú and Cabo Branco are calm, urban beaches lined with kiosks, and the Pride parade passes along the Cabo Branco seafront. About 30 km south, in Conde, Praia de Tambaba was Brazil's first beach to be regulated as naturist. It's split into a clothed part and a naturist part. Photography and sexual behaviour are banned in the naturist part. Men on their own aren't allowed in without a naturist card. Reports say male couples are usually admitted, but groups of men are turned away. It's a couple- and family-oriented beach, not a gay beach.

Pride and events

João Pessoa's Pride, now called the Parada da Diversidade, gathers on Avenida Cabo Branco near Sesc and heads along the seafront toward the Busto de Tamandaré. The date isn't fixed. The 22nd edition was on 19 November 2023, the 23rd on 25 August 2024, the 24th on Saturday 6 December 2025 and the 25th on Sunday 30 August 2026, with free entry and local drag and music acts. The Fórum Paraibano LGBTQIAPN+ organised the 2025 edition with city hall support. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing, so check the parade's Facebook page (paradalgbtoficial.jp). Organisers quote crowd expectations, but there are no independent attendance counts. There's also a Bloco da Diversidade at Carnival, and the state and city hold events around 17 May (the day against homophobia) and 29 January (Trans Visibility Day).

Community and health

Espaço LGBT, the Paraíba state LGBT reference centre, is at Rua Rodrigues de Aquino 390 in the Centro (phone (83) 3214-7188, WhatsApp (83) 99119-0157). It offers free psychological, legal and social support. If you face discrimination or violence during your trip, start here. The Movimento do Espírito Lilás (MEL), founded in 1992, is the city's oldest LGBT rights group still active. The state also runs an LGBT shelter, the Casa de Acolhida Cris Nagô, opened in 2022. For free HIV, syphilis and hepatitis rapid tests, the municipal CTA is inside the CAIS health unit on Rua Alberto de Brito in Jaguaribe. Local press gives its hours as weekdays 7 am to 5 pm, but call first.

Safety

The legal protections are strong and the state and city have real LGBT services, but Brazil still records high levels of anti-LGBT violence. The national tallies fell in 2025: Grupo Gay da Bahia counted 257 violent LGBT deaths and ANTRA 80 murders of trans people. The Northeast remains the worst region, and Paraíba recorded four trans deaths that year. Trans women and sex workers carry most of that risk. For visitors, normal precautions go a long way. Use app rides at night rather than walking between the Centro and the beach. Keep valuables out of sight on the seafront after dark, and meet app dates somewhere public.

Getting there and around

Presidente Castro Pinto International Airport (JPA) is in Bayeux, about 11 km from the centre and roughly 23 km from the Tambaú hotel strip. Recife is about 120 km south by road, and its airport has far more flights. The beach districts are flat and walkable along the seafront promenade. Use Uber, 99 or a taxi to get to the Centro. Ponta do Seixas, at the southern end of Cabo Branco, is the easternmost point of mainland South America.

Where to stay

There's no gay hotel. Stay along the Tambaú, Cabo Branco or Manaíra seafront: that's where the hotels, restaurants and Empório Café are, and the Pride route passes along the Cabo Branco seafront. Littoral Express and Atlântico Praia Hotel face Tambaú beach on Avenida Almirante Tamandaré, a short walk from the Feirinha de Tambaú and Empório Café. Hotel Caiçara is one block inland in Tambaú and cheaper than the seafront. On the Cabo Branco side, Nord Luxxor, Littoral Hotel and Sesc Cabo Branco are across the road from the beach near where Pride gathers, and the ibis is at the quieter southern end. In Manaíra, to the north, Verdegreen and Hotel Hardman are both on the seafront. All of them are mainstream hotels.

CTA(エイズ・性感染症検査・カウンセリングセンター)CAIS Jaguaribeでは、無料でHIV検査を受けることができます。
