Fort Collins: A Guide to Northern Colorado's LGBTQ+-Friendly College Town

History and Current Scene

Fort Collins has grown over the past two decades into one of the most welcoming small cities in northern Colorado. Founded as a military outpost in 1864 and later shaped by its agricultural college, the city is now defined by Colorado State University, a thriving craft-beer industry, and an outdoorsy Front Range lifestyle. Its LGBTQ+ community came into its own in the 2000s and 2010s, and today the city council's nondiscrimination ordinances, a visible university population, and a cluster of LGBTQ-owned businesses give Fort Collins an open, easygoing feel.

This is not a big-city gay district. The scene is diffuse and community-driven rather than nightlife-heavy, so the best way to connect is through Old Town's welcoming bars and cafes, the local organizations, and seasonal Pride events.

Neighborhoods and Areas

Old Town Fort Collins is the heart of everything worth seeing. Centered on College Avenue and Mountain Avenue, Old Town is a compact, walkable grid of historic brick buildings, independent shops, galleries, breweries and restaurants, with Old Town Square as its gathering place. Most LGBTQ-friendly and LGBTQ-owned venues sit within a few blocks of here.

The Avenues, just north of Old Town, is a leafy residential neighborhood popular with LGBTQ+ residents and families. The area around the CSU campus to the south brings a younger, student energy and plenty of casual cafes, while the South College Avenue corridor has newer restaurants and hotels.

Bars, Cafes and LGBTQ-Owned Spaces

R Bar and Lounge (107 Laurel St, near College Avenue) is Fort Collins' one dedicated LGBTQ+ bar — a friendly neighborhood spot known for drag nights, karaoke and weekend events. Beyond it, the social scene is woven through Old Town's general establishments, many of which are openly LGBTQ-friendly.

Several local businesses are explicitly LGBTQ-owned and worth seeking out, including BookStore on the Square, an LGBTQ- and woman-owned independent bookshop on Linden Street, and The Love Shack, a trans- and LGBTQIA+-owned alcohol-free "mocktail" bar. Kore's Plant Cafe is a queer- and disability-owned plant-based cafe. These spaces, alongside the city's many inclusive coffee shops and breweries, are where the community actually gathers.

Organizations and Support

Fort Collins and the wider region have an active network of LGBTQ+ organizations. SPLASH Youth of Northern Colorado runs youth programming out of its "Prism Palace" space on South College Avenue. Northern Colorado Equality is the regional advocacy group behind NoCo Pride. On campus, the CSU Pride Resource Center in the Lory Student Center supports LGBTQ+ students and visitors alike.

Pride and Events

The region's signature celebration is NoCo Pride (Northern Colorado Pride), organized by Northern Colorado Equality. It is a summer event — recent editions have been held in August — and it is genuinely regional, rotating between Fort Collins and Greeley; the 2025 festival took place at the Island Grove Event Center in Greeley. During Pride season, Old Town bars and breweries typically host their own themed nights and fundraisers. Because the date and location can shift year to year, check nocoequality.org for the current schedule before planning a trip around it.

Beyond Pride, the calendar includes drag performances, LGBTQ+ film screenings, book events and community meetups, many organized by local groups and hosted at Old Town venues and the Poudre River Public Library.

Where to Stay

Downtown hotels put you within walking distance of Old Town's bars, shops and restaurants. The Armstrong Hotel is a restored historic boutique property on College Avenue, and The Elizabeth Hotel, Autograph Collection on Chestnut Street is Old Town's upscale flagship with a rooftop bar. The Edwards House is a well-regarded bed-and-breakfast in a quiet Mountain Avenue neighborhood. Chain hotels along the South College corridor and near I-25 cover standard amenities at a range of price points, and short-term rentals are plentiful for longer stays.

Food and Dining

Fort Collins eats well. Old Town is full of independent restaurants and cafes emphasizing local, farm-to-table cooking, and many are LGBTQ-owned or openly welcoming. The craft-beer scene is central to the city's identity, with more than twenty breweries — New Belgium Brewing (500 Linden St, with tours), Odell Brewing (800 E Lincoln Ave) and Fort Collins Brewery among the best known, plus smaller favorites like Horse & Dragon and Equinox. Most breweries run inclusive taprooms, host food trucks, and sponsor community events, making them easy, low-key places to spend an evening.

Safety

Fort Collins is generally considered a safe, welcoming city with low violent-crime rates and a progressive civic culture. Colorado has strong statewide LGBTQ+ protections, and local law enforcement has taken part in community events. As anywhere, use standard common-sense precautions, especially after dark.

Transit and Getting Around

Old Town is very walkable, and the Transfort bus system — including the MAX bus rapid transit line along the Mason corridor — connects the main parts of town; ride-share services (Uber, Lyft) operate throughout the area. Fort Collins sits about 65 miles north of Denver, roughly an hour's drive via I-25, and Denver International Airport is the main gateway. There is no Amtrak service; most visitors drive or use regional shuttles.

Day Trips and the Outdoors

Fort Collins is a springboard for the Front Range. Horsetooth Reservoir and Horsetooth Rock, minutes west of town, offer hiking, swimming and boating, and the Cache la Poudre River provides fishing, kayaking and scenic drives up the canyon. Rocky Mountain National Park is roughly 90 minutes away by car. Boulder, with its own lively progressive culture and the Pearl Street Mall, is about 45 to 55 minutes south, and Denver — with big-city nightlife, museums and a far larger LGBTQ+ scene around Capitol Hill — is about an hour away.

Practical Information

The most popular times to visit are the warm, long days of summer (including Pride season) and the mild, uncrowded weeks of September and October. Pack layers for Colorado's changeable weather and sun protection for the high-altitude light; the city sits at about 5,000 feet. Visitors looking for authentic small-city charm, craft beer, easy access to the mountains, and a genuinely welcoming community will find Fort Collins an easy place to enjoy.
