The honest summary: Lakeland is a city of about 125,000 on I-4, halfway between Tampa and Orlando, and its gay scene fits in one building. That building is The Parrot on East Main Street, which LkldNow says has been the home of Lakeland's LGBTQ community since at least 1969. Add a young LGBTQ+ community center, a June Pride festival in Munn Park and a fall queer market, and that is the full picture. There is no gay neighbourhood, no sauna and no second bar.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage is legal across the US, but Florida has no state law banning anti-LGBTQ discrimination in housing or public accommodation, and recent state laws restrict classroom teaching on gender identity, trans health care and drag shows that admit minors.
Where Lakeland is
Lakeland sits in Polk County, about 35 miles east of Tampa and 55 miles southwest of Orlando. Downtown is compact and walkable, around Munn Park, Lake Mirror and the restored 1924 Terrace Hotel. Outside downtown the city is car country. Citrus Connection runs the local buses, but not late enough to get you home from a bar.
Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL), about 5 miles southwest of downtown, has had Avelo flights since June 2024 to a short list of cities including New Haven, Nashville, Atlanta and San Juan. Most visitors fly into Tampa (TPA), about 45 minutes away, or Orlando (MCO), about an hour.
The Parrot: the one gay bar
The Parrot is at 1030 East Main Street, a few blocks east of downtown. LkldNow's August 2026 history piece traces it back to 1969 under the name The Green Parrot. It later traded as Pulse, and the current owners went back to "The Parrot" in 2020. That makes it one of the oldest gay bars in Florida. Hotspots Magazine called it the state's second oldest back in 2012, and some locals claim it is the oldest, but nobody has proved either claim.
What you'll find: open Tuesday to Sunday from 6pm to 2am, closed Monday, 21 and over. LkldNow lists karaoke on Thursdays and drag shows on Fridays and Saturdays, with occasional stand-up comedy. Drag Race names including Alexis Mateo have played the stage. Google reviewers (4.5 from about 85 reviews) mostly praise the staff, the bartenders and the shows. During Polk Pride week it hosts one of the evening parties.
The bar posts its weekly lineup on its Facebook page (theparrotlakeland). There is no separate website. Call +1 863-370-9146 if you need to check a show night.
The Rose Dynasty Center, at 1253 West Memorial Boulevard, opened in June 2024 as Polk County's first LGBTQ+ community center (WUSF, LkldNow). The Rose Dynasty Foundation runs it. Its founder, Jason DeShazo, also performs in drag as Momma Ashley Rose. It is a daytime service, not a hangout. Pineapple Healthcare offers free HIV and STI testing, PrEP, primary care and trans care there, and the center hosts sober, 55-plus and trans support groups. Google lists it as open Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm and Friday until 2pm.
The foundation also puts on drag shows and the Rainbow Roots Festival. Its second edition took place on 4 October 2026 at Lake Mirror Auditorium, with queer-owned vendors and the first AIDS Memorial Quilt display in Polk County in about 20 years (LkldNow).
Other groups are active mainly around Pride. PFLAG of Polk County has run for about 25 years, and Lakeland Youth Alliance works with LGBTQ+ teens aged 13 to 20. Beacon Hill Fellowship hosts the Pride in Faith service and the June remembrance for the victims of the 2016 Pulse shooting in Orlando.
Pride: Polk Pride in Munn Park
Polk Pride (polkpridefl.org) organises a week of events each June, ending with Pride in the Park, a free, all-ages festival in Munn Park downtown. The 2026 edition was the 11th and ran from 12 to 20 June under the theme "Proud Through the Storm". Pride in the Park took place on 20 June and was followed by an after-party at Eala's Speakeasy (LkldNow). The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing. Expect a Saturday in mid-to-late June.
The politics are worth knowing. The Polk County Commission voted 3 to 2 against a Pride Month proclamation in 2023 (Patch). The City of Lakeland issued one every year through 2025, then issued none in 2026 while it reviewed a new state anti-DEI law. Off-duty Lakeland police work the festival each year, and a few protesters have turned up in past years.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
- Pulse / The Green Parrot (Lakeland): old names for The Parrot, not separate bars. It has no connection to the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.
- Karma Bar & Lounge in the Regal Grand Hotel on Memorial Boulevard: Hotspots called it LGBT-friendly in 2012. We found no current trace of it.
- Alligator Alley's Tuesday gay night: listed in 2012, with no sign of it since.
- Barley's Taproom downtown: an older version of this guide called it an LGBTQ+ hangout. We couldn't find any source for that and have removed it.
Where to stay
There are no LGBTQ+ guesthouses in Lakeland, so pick by location. The Terrace Hotel (Hilton's Tapestry Collection) on East Main Street faces Lake Mirror. It is the only downtown option and a short drive or a long walk from The Parrot. Most other hotels are budget chains on US Highway 98 North near I-4, about 10 minutes' drive away. Camp Margaritaville in Auburndale, east of town, has cabins and RV sites. Read recent reviews for the cheaper motels on Memorial Boulevard.
- Come Friday or Saturday for drag. Weeknights at The Parrot are quieter, and Thursday is karaoke.
- Plan the ride home. Rideshares work in Lakeland, but buses stop early.
- For a bigger night out, Tampa's Ybor City and St Petersburg's Grand Central District are about 45 minutes west. Orlando's bars are about an hour northeast.
- Daytime: Lake Mirror's promenade, Lake Morton's swans, the Polk Museum of Art and Florida Southern College's Frank Lloyd Wright buildings.
A few words in Spanish
About a fifth of Polk County is Hispanic, with large Puerto Rican and Mexican communities. Useful phrases: "¿Hay show de drag esta noche?" (Is there a drag show tonight?), "¿A qué hora abren?" (What time do you open?), "orgullo" (pride).
