Gay Orem: An Honest Guide

Orem is a city of around 98,000 people in the heart of Utah Valley, sitting just north of Provo and about 45 minutes south of Salt Lake City. Nicknamed "Family City USA," it is best known as the home of Utah Valley University (UVU) — the largest university in the state by enrollment — and for its clean, suburban, family-oriented character. It is also part of one of the most religiously conservative and heavily Latter-day Saint regions in the United States, and that shapes what LGBTQ+ visitors will and will not find here.

Let's be upfront: Orem has no gay bars, no gay clubs, no bathhouses, and no established gay nightlife of its own. Anyone searching for "gay bars in Orem" will only turn up venues an hour away in Salt Lake City. What Orem does have — and what makes it more welcoming than its reputation suggests — is a genuine, growing LGBTQ+ community anchored by the university, a nearby youth-and-family resource center, and an annual Pride celebration just down the road in Provo.

LGBTQ+ Community & Resources

The real heart of queer life in Orem is Utah Valley University. UVU runs a dedicated LGBTQ+ program through its Office of Inclusion on the Orem campus, offering advising, a welcoming lounge, and support groups, while the student-led club Spectrum: Queers & Allies Association organizes events and peer support through the school year. For a city in Utah County, this is a meaningful anchor, and it is open to the wider community, not just students.

A few minutes south in downtown Provo, Encircle Provo (91 W 200 S) is one of Utah Valley's most valued LGBTQ+ spaces — an affirming house offering drop-in hours, friendship circles, and low-cost affirming therapy, focused on youth and families. PFLAG Provo / Utah County supports LGBTQ+ people alongside their parents and allies, and QueerMeals hosts community meals in the area. Together these give the Orem-Provo area a small but real support network.

Pride in Utah Valley

The region's flagship queer event is Pride in Progress, held each April in Provo and organized by the Cougar Pride Center. It typically begins with a march from the historic Utah County Courthouse and gathers at Provo's Veterans Memorial Park for a free festival of performances, vendors, and community booths. In a valley where visible Pride was once unimaginable, it now draws well over a thousand people and is the event to plan a spring visit around. The much larger Utah Pride Festival takes place in Salt Lake City in early June.

Nightlife: Head to Salt Lake City

For actual gay nightlife, Salt Lake City is your destination, and it is easy to reach. The UTA FrontRunner commuter train runs from Orem Central station (next to UVU) up through Provo to downtown Salt Lake City in roughly an hour, so you can go out without driving. SLC's dedicated venues include The Sun Trapp (the state's oldest and longest-running gay bar), Club Try-Angles, MILK+, Why Kiki, and the drag-and-events venue Metro Music Hall. Note that Utah does not currently have a reliably operating gay bathhouse, so don't expect a sauna scene.

Where to Stay

Orem has a solid cluster of comfortable, gay-friendly national-brand hotels, most of them along or near University Parkway and the I-15 corridor — convenient for UVU, the University Place district, and quick freeway or FrontRunner access to Provo and Salt Lake City. None are gay-specific, but Utah Valley's chain hotels are professional and welcoming, and make a practical base for exploring the valley and the nearby mountains.

Getting Around

Orem is easiest with a car, but it is unusually well connected for a Utah suburb. The UVX bus rapid-transit line links Orem, UVU, University Place, and downtown Provo, while FrontRunner rail handles longer trips to Salt Lake City. Provo Airport (PVU) is 10-15 minutes south for limited regional flights; Salt Lake City International (SLC), about 45 miles north, is the main gateway.

Safety & Legal Notes

Utah recognizes same-sex marriage and has a statewide nondiscrimination law (the 2015 "Utah Compromise," SB296) covering employment and housing, though it carries religious exemptions and does not cover public accommodations. More recent legislation has moved the other way: HB257 (2024) restricts transgender access to bathrooms and locker rooms in government-owned facilities, and HB77 (2025) bans Pride and other flags in schools and government buildings. Utah County is socially conservative, so most LGBTQ+ life here is low-key and community-based rather than out on the street. Same-sex couples are generally safe, but public displays of affection may draw more attention than on the coasts — discretion is a personal call.
