A pleasant and tranquil slice of quietude in the midst of the city all around, it was grand to stroll around it. Well laid out they feature terraced designs and little pavilions. There is a monument to the Spanish painter José Moreno Carbonero.
This is a slightly smaller park, or as the word Jadine reveals rather a garden. A public garden - and therefore with park character. These gardens - there are probably several in fact historically - are located on the southern slope of Gibralfaro (i.e. the mountain with the fortress) and owe their name to a gate from ancient Arab times, which was once located there. The gardens were planned as an addition to the Alcazaba (the smaller castle) and therefore still harmonize with its decorative layout and arrangement. Fountains, paths and rotundas alternate in the complex with lush vegetation. Ideally, you walk through the Jardines de Puerta Oscura from top to bottom. Especially in the hot hours of sunshine, one or the other shaded place and path... nevertheless, downhill is always easier. Separated from the Jardines de Puerta Oscura is the Malaga Municipal Park, which is partly separated by a road. But later in a separate post.
Thursday 18th April and we visited this hilltop Fortress which overlooks the City of Malaga. We walked up the zig-zag pathway starting at Subida Coracha. However, our descent was by a different route which took through these delightful gardens. The stone paved pathway led is gently back down to the City, alongside the Jardines de Pedro Luis Alonso and the beautiful Ayuntamiento de Malaga (City Hal). As we slowly walked down the tree lined pathway we saw some colourful flowers, a vast array of trees, bushes and a variety of palm trees. There was also a water feature that was fed by a water spout protruding from the wall and surrounded by pink trailing plants. Stone benches lined the pathway through these clean and well maintained gardens.
These are beautiful, almost tropical gardens in central Malaga, under the alcazaba overlooking the bullring, excellent when it's hot
Beautiful, green garden, between the Town Hall and the rock of the Alcazaba. It was designed in 1937, by the architect Fernando Guerrero-Strachan Rosado. It includes, among others, cypresses, palms, pines, jacarandas and boucavilleas. It offers a great break from the hot Andalusian sun.
Beautifull place to visit
⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Puerta Oscura Gardens are one of Málaga's most iconic spots. Designed in 1937 by architect Fernando Guerrero-Strachan on the southern slope of Mount Gibralfaro, their aim was to seamlessly integrate the walls of Málaga's Alcazaba into the landscape. Their name comes from an old gate of the now-vanished fortress, known as the Puerta Oscura (Dark Gate). Laid out across terraces, walkways, and roundabouts, these gardens combine Mediterranean and subtropical vegetation with magnificent views of the historic center, making them an ideal place for strolling and enjoying both history and nature.
Pretty
A true hidden gem in the heart of Málaga! Jardines de Puerta Oscura is an absolute must-visit if you are looking for a peaceful escape from the bustling city streets. Located right below the Alcazaba, these tiered gardens offer a stunning combination of lush Mediterranean greenery, fragrant flowers, and historic stone walls that transport you back in time. What I loved the most: The Views: As you climb the pathways, you get some of the most beautiful perspectives of the Alcazaba and the city skyline. It’s perfect for photography enthusiasts! The Atmosphere: It is incredibly tranquil, well-maintained, and filled with shade, making it a perfect spot for a slow afternoon stroll or a moment of reflection. Location: It’s so convenient to reach, yet it feels worlds away from the noise of the main tourist routes. Whether you are a history lover, a nature fan, or just someone looking for a quiet place to sit and enjoy the charm of Málaga, this place is magical. Don’t rush through it—take your time to explore the different levels. Highly recommended!
An interesting place to walk. It looks particularly well in the late afternoon/sunset time. At the top, you have an option to visit some ruins. I am not comfortable with the names yet. After my second visit tomorrow, I may be able to remember them. By the way, I "philosophical" on my way up. What is the difference between a vision and smell. Well, you see things that exist (like flowers) and with smell? You smell things that don't exist (like tilets by the path up).
The gardens, laid out in 1937, are arranged in a series of terraces and feature, among other plants, cypress trees, Canary Island date palms, Aleppo pines, bougainvillea, and jacaranda. The lower entrance is dominated by a very old large-leaved fig tree, which is originally from Australia. The interesting feature of this park is the vertical arrangement of the many paths, which are lined with natural stone.
It's just a garden, nothing special. Nice place to sit, relax, and enjoy the view.
It's a pleasure to stroll along the many paths... to observe the flora, plants, trees, the ancient history on which it all is based, and to see Malaga from there... I encourage you to visit it.
