Thomas, the brasserie

We visited this restaurant this evening. The food we had was excellent, as was the service at the start of the evening. Unfortunately the meal was completely spoiled by the length of time we waited for our order to be taken for desserts. At around 9.30pm, only 1 member of staff was present upstairs. In the end, we decided not to bother with desserts and instead asked for the bill. I am therefore only giving an overall rating of 3 and regrettably would not choose to dine here again.

Lovely lunch of Pembrokeshire oysters, St Bride's crab crumpet, Isle of Wight tomato tart, beef fillet Rossini and Perl Wen toasted waffle with sherry caramel and truffle.

We had lovely evening at Thomas: very good food and drink along with friendly and attentive (but not over-attentive) service. Highly recommended for a special occasion.

"We actually had the great pleasure of lunching at Simmons pop up bistro in Newport Pembrokeshire. We sat in the sun and enjoyed the best ever lobster tail, cut into medallions and served on small smashed sauté potatoes. The sauce with it was spicy and superb. Washed down with a couple of glasses of rose wine and I was in heaven. This new summer enterprise is a huge success. Well done Tom and all the team."

We went for a meal for two to celebrate my husband’s 58th birthday, using First Table so that we could afford to treat ourselves to somewhere special. The restaurant wasn’t in our local area, and as the meal was more than we would normally spend, taking a taxi there and back wasn’t really affordable. We decided to drive, and the restaurant kindly helped us with parking arrangements, which made the whole evening possible. We arrived a little early and were shown to seats at the bar while we waited for our table. We chose our food from the menu and enjoyed a drink and a chat while we waited. Our wine and water arrived promptly, and then our first courses arrived, brought out by one of the chefs. And WOW! The presentation was absolutely stunning — honestly, some of the best-presented food I have ever seen. I had the tomato tart and my husband had the beef tartare, and both were absolutely delicious. Our plates were cleared and the main courses followed. I had the lamb cannon and my husband had the pork, accompanied by glazed carrots and potatoes. Once again, we were blown away, not only by how beautifully everything was presented but by the incredible flavours. For dessert, I had the salted caramel tart and my husband had the warm chocolate mousse. Both were delicious and the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. I can honestly say that this was the best meal I have had in Cardiff in 30 years. Every course was beautifully presented, full of flavour and clearly prepared with real care and attention to detail. It was such a lovely way to celebrate my husband’s birthday, and we left feeling that we had discovered somewhere truly special. We have already recommended the restaurant to friends and family and will definitely be returning. Thank you for making our birthday celebration so memorable!

Thomas claims to be ‘THE’ brasserie. And I think what he puts out there stakes a firm claim on that title. I had a friend at drama school called Thomas; he ended up getting with my ex - not sure if they’re still together, but I hope, if they are, that they’re happy. Thomas, the brasserie, and the quality of this dining experience, has been one step closer for me in the direction of healing. Whenever I hear the name Thomas now, I will no longer feel the bitterness I’ve carried for years. Thanks to this restaurant, I’ve finally reached a place of peace.

Food was excellent and the place was busy. We arrived on time for our meal but the table wasn’t ready. We were seated at the bar whilst we waited but we had to ask for an update. A simple apology for the delay would have gone a long way. When we booked the meal the system asked for a reason which was to celebrate my birthday. A small gesture would have been appreciated; I’ve been to other places and received a complimentary brownie which is a really nice touch. Overall we had an enjoyable evening and our waitress was nice, but the above dampened the experience a bit.

Perfect in every way. Our server was exceptional. Very engaging and friendly and helpful. Really rounded off a wonderful experience. You can have the best food in the world but if your server doesn’t want to be front of house it can kill the experience. This certainly wasn’t the case. As I said exceptional young lady. The food was incredible. The jus with the pie was sublime! The mushroom parfait with the pickled mushrooms was glorious! The whole table enjoyed every dish served!
