Ten o'clock on a weeknight on Beverly Boulevard: the traffic still hums, a taco truck is doing steady business on the corner, and a few men in black jeans and boots are drifting towards an unmarked door. Los Angeles is enormous and built around the car, and its gay scene is spread out to match: polished bars in West Hollywood, the leather side in Silver Lake and East Hollywood, and the Valley over the hills. The honest picture in 2026 is smaller than the city's size suggests. Most of the old bathhouses have closed, leaving one cruise club near Silver Lake, one bathhouse in North Hollywood, a couple of leather bars, and the apps for everything else.
Legal in one line: sex between men is legal in California and same-sex couples can marry. Sex in public is not: lewd conduct in a public place is a misdemeanour under California Penal Code § 647(a), and indecent exposure under § 314 is a misdemeanour that can carry sex-offender registration.
Where the bathhouses went
Los Angeles once had a dense bathhouse scene. In May 2014, when the Flex club on Melrose Avenue shut its gates, the local site WEHOonline could still count six other gay bathhouses across the city. Since then most have gone. The Melrose Spa closed in 2017 when it lost its lease; both Roman Holiday clubs, in Mar Vista and Van Nuys, closed during the pandemic in 2020; the 1350 Club in Wilmington closed in May 2022; and on 19 December 2022 the Midtowne Spa at 615 Kohler Street downtown, which WEHO TIMES called the last Midtowne in the country, closed after about 50 years. Details are in the box below and on our Los Angeles saunas page.
Slammer: the cruise club

Slammer · 3688 Beverly Boulevard
Slammer sits on Beverly Boulevard about two blocks east of Vermont Avenue, on the edge of Silver Lake and Koreatown, a short walk from Vermont/Beverly station on Metro's B Line. Leather Men Travel calls it "LA's long-standing sex club". It's a sex club rather than a bathhouse: there's no sauna or steam room. Travel Gay lists a dark room, a maze, cabins, slings, a "suckatorium", a watersports room, a video room and an outdoor smoking area. Everyday clothes are fine and fetish gear is welcome; there's a weekly fetish night.
Hours (Travel Gay, last updated March 2025): closed Mondays; Tuesday to Thursday 8pm to 2am; Friday 8pm to 4am; Saturday 2pm to 4am; Sunday 2pm to 2am. Prices: Travel Gay gives a one-off fee of $28 for out-of-towners; visitors' reviews on misterb&b mention around $24 for members and $37 for non-members (2024), a $5 re-entry fee, and a five-month membership at $57 (2025). Prices change, so check before you go, and bring photo ID. One 2025 reviewer described a dispute over a locker key and ID, so keep track of your key and make sure you leave with your documents.
North Hollywood Spa: the Valley bathhouse

North Hollywood Spa · 5636 Vineland Avenue, North Hollywood
Over the hills in the San Fernando Valley, at Vineland and Burbank, North Hollywood Spa is listed on misterb&b as a licensed private club for gay and bisexual men, open since 1984. Listings describe two floors with a dry sauna, a steam room, a wet area, workout equipment, an adult video lounge and a 24-hour mini café; another directory adds a large jacuzzi and a garden sundeck. Leather Men Travel calls it "sex central in the Valley". Yelp still listed it as a going concern in October 2026.
Hours: it runs around the clock for most of the week, but misterb&b lists a weekly break from 10am Tuesday to 6am Thursday. We couldn't confirm current prices: call +1 818 760 6969 before you go. From Hollywood it's a short ride up the 101, or a few stops on the Metro B Line to North Hollywood followed by a rideshare.
Leather and cruise bars
The leather and cruising side of gay LA lives east of West Hollywood, in Silver Lake and East Hollywood, with a second outpost in the Valley.

The Eagle LA · 4219 Santa Monica Boulevard, Silver Lake
The Eagle LA is the leather bar of the east side. Leather Men Travel says it has been pouring drinks at this address since 2006, and Travel Gay describes a large main bar, a smaller, more intimate one, a smoking patio and porn on the screens, with leather and fetish gear encouraged at weekends. It's a bar, not a sex venue, so treat it as a place to meet rather than play. Travel Gay lists it as open from 4pm on weekdays and from 2pm at weekends, until 2am. Bring photo ID; you must be 21 to drink.
Bullet Bar · 10522 Burbank Boulevard, North Hollywood
Leather Men Travel calls the Bullet "the Valley's classic leather bar", and it pairs naturally with a night at North Hollywood Spa. A 2022 guide described it among the LA bars with a cruising side, but we couldn't confirm its current hours or whether it still has a back area, so check before you go. For West Hollywood's mainstream bars, see our Los Angeles bars page.
Parties
Much of LA's cruising now happens at roaming parties rather than fixed venues. A 2022 roundup listed jack-off parties such as LAX JACKS and LA/OC Jacks, the rotating CumUnion nights sold through Eventbrite, and the BRÜT and DEN parties. Dates and venues change constantly, so follow the organisers on social media for the current calendar.
Closed or unconfirmed: Midtowne Spa, 615 Kohler Street, Downtown, closed on 19 December 2022 after about 50 years; the building went up for sale. Roman Holiday (12814 Venice Boulevard, Mar Vista, and 14435 Victory Boulevard, Van Nuys) closed during the 2020 pandemic. The 1350 Club, 510 W Anaheim Street, Wilmington, closed in May 2022. Faultline, the leather bar at 4216 Melrose Avenue, opened in 1994 and closed in 2021. The Zone, the two-floor sex club at 1037 N Sycamore Avenue in Hollywood, is now listed as closed on Yelp, and we found no sign that it's operating in 2026. Flex at 4424 Melrose Avenue was reported closed in May 2014; some directories still list it, but we couldn't confirm it's open, so don't travel there without checking. The Melrose Spa (7269 Melrose Avenue) closed in 2017.
Parks, beaches and cars: the law
Los Angeles has plenty of parks, beaches and hiking trails, and the apps are full of men looking to meet in cars. Remember that none of these is a private place in law.
The law: under California Penal Code § 647(a), anyone who engages in, or solicits someone to engage in, lewd or dissolute conduct in a public place, or in a place open to or exposed to public view, commits a misdemeanour: up to six months in county jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000. This covers parks, beaches, public toilets and cars parked in public view. Indecent exposure under § 314 is also a misdemeanour on a first offence, but a conviction can require registration as a sex offender, with consequences far beyond the fine, including for future travel and visas.
Safety: isolated trails and car parks are dark at night, and robbery and set-ups through the apps are the main risks. Car break-ins are common across Los Angeles, so never leave bags, phones or anything else visible in a parked car. Carry as little as possible, keep your phone charged, tell a friend where you're going, and leave if anything feels wrong. In an emergency, call 911.
Local colour
West Hollywood is its own small city, and its stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard is the polished, walkable heart of gay LA: rainbow crosswalks, big bars and the Pride street fair. Silver Lake and East Hollywood are scruffier and more leather; Downtown is warehouses and parties; and the Valley keeps its own scene. Distances are long, so plan your night around one area. Bars close at 2am, and the late-night ritual is the same across the city: a stop at a taco truck before a rideshare home.
WeHo Pride and LA Pride 2026
Los Angeles has two Prides in June. WeHo Pride ran from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 June 2026, with the OUTLOUD music festival in West Hollywood Park, a street fair along Santa Monica Boulevard on 6 and 7 June, and the parade on Sunday 7 June at noon, along Santa Monica Boulevard between Crescent Heights and San Vicente. A week later, the LA Pride Parade, produced by Christopher Street West, took place in Hollywood on Sunday 14 June 2026 from 11am, starting at Highland Avenue and Sunset Boulevard and looping along Hollywood Boulevard. The usual Pride in the Park concert was not held in 2026; instead there was a free LA Pride Village street festival on Hollywood Boulevard between Vine and Gower. Expect both events in June again in 2027; check the organisers' sites for dates. Venues get busier on Pride weekends.
Practical tips
- ID: every bar and club will ask for photo ID. Foreign visitors should carry a passport. The drinking age is 21.
- Entry: clubs like Slammer charge an entry or membership-style fee; bring a card and some cash, and check prices on the door.
- Phones and lockers: use the lockers, keep your key on your wrist, and keep your phone out of sight in dark areas.
- Consent: in sex venues and dark rooms, a hand moved away means no. Ask, and respect the answer.
- Getting there and home: Metro's B Line serves both Vermont/Beverly (for Slammer) and North Hollywood, but trains stop running late at night, so check the last train on metro.net. For most late journeys, a rideshare or taxi is the practical option.
- PEP: the Los Angeles LGBT Center offers low-cost PEP; call 323 993 7500. Its medical building, the McDonald/Wright Building at 1625 N Schrader Boulevard in Hollywood, has an on-site pharmacy, and new patients should call for an appointment. PEP must start within 72 hours, ideally much sooner. The county's PEP warmline is 213 351 7699. Out of hours, go to an emergency room or urgent care; you may get a starter pack of a few days while the rest of the 28-day course is filled.
- PrEP: the LGBT Center also runs a PrEP service; its PrEP line is 323 993 8990, weekdays 9am to 6pm.
- Chems: if GHB/GBL is around, never mix it with alcohol, never dose for someone else, and call 911 if someone won't wake up.
- Apps: Grindr and Sniffies are where most hook-ups start. Meet first in a bar or other public place and share your location with a friend.
