Writing Spirals: Multicultural Contemplations on Beginnings, Endings, and Cycles

The spiral holds great meaning for cultures all over the world and has captivated our attention throughout ancient and modern time. Whether of metaphysical and philosophical significance, or the many scientific and biological iterations of this powerful symbol, the multi-faceted spiral will be our muse.
In this 3-part generative writing workshop, we’ll expand our writing across multiple genres including poetry, essay, and narrative with prompts inspired by multicultural authors. Thematically, we’ll move through Irish-Celtic mysticism, spiraling seasons of emergence, Afro-futurist science fiction, and our personal place within the great spiral. We’ll engage impactful elements of style and craft from our mentor texts like punctuation, dialogue, and symbol to enhance writing of resonance. Some time will be devoted to giving and receiving feedback as well as sharing in a supportive space. Writers of all levels and backgrounds are welcome.
Course Outcomes
Writers will:
Explore a variety of multicultural texts as inspiration for writing.
Draft poems, creative non-fiction, and narrative pieces related to spirals.
Engage elements of craft and style from multigenre model texts.
Enhance writing through feedback and sharing in positive and supportive circles.

We want our writing classes and seminars to be accessible to everyone, regardless of income and background. We understand that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our Access Program offers writing class and seminar tuitions at a reduced rate. Most writing classes have at least one access spot available.
