Shortbus: Despite the unusual choice for a name, this cozy corner bar has one of the friendliest and lively vibes you’ll find in Jongno, particularly if you’re from Japan as the owner is fluent in both languages. He speaks some English as well, so that’s an added bonus. The shape of the bar (roughly a V) is conducive for conversation and banter and while I wouldn’t say they’re big on fancy cocktails and mixology, the simplicity of the menu suits the overall style of the bar. Mixed drinks, beer, wine and soju/sake are the staples as you look around. You’ll be greeted upon your arrival with a warm, welcome smile and a warm towel. The videos and music are a mix of upbeat recent hits from both Korea and abroad as well as some older classics and ballads. Generally the clientele is gay men, early 30’s to late 40’s and beyond. There tend to be a lot of people who are visiting from Japan since it’s become popular by word of mouth over there with a mix of other locals and a few other foreigners sprinkled in. Professionals and career people and academics. Happy hour until late. Closed on Tuesdays as of this review. Side note: When I did a search using Google maps for gay bars in this area, I was surprised to not see one of my favorites come up, as I’d been many times before. In one sense, it made sense as the scene is still somewhat low-key and understated to appease the society generally, but I feel like that may be starting to change as people’s minds are opened and as more businesses use social media and reviews in order to survive post-Covid.

I went my first night back in Seoul and this place was great. Super cute atmosphere and the bosses were so friendly. The drinks were good. I felt very welcomed. The cheese pretzels were delicious!!

I may already be drunk. They welcome anyone. I think it would be helpful for you to first open your mind and understand what a short bus is.
