Amsterdam: The Honest 2026 Guide

The honest summary: Amsterdam has one of the densest gay scenes in Europe, about 940,000 residents (942,504 in the CBS count published in February 2026), and a bar street, a leather street and one remaining gay sauna, all a short walk apart in the old centre. It is easy to be openly gay here. It is also expensive, crowded at Pride, and less of a paradise than the postcards suggest: reports of anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination and violence in the Netherlands have climbed since 2022.

Legal in one line
The Netherlands opened marriage and adoption to same-sex couples on 1 April 2001, the first country in the world to do so; sexual orientation has been named in Article 1 of the Constitution since 22 February 2023, and a ban on conversion practices takes effect on 1 January 2027.

Where the scene is
Current guides agree on the same streets. Reguliersdwarsstraat, behind the flower market, is the main strip, named by all four guides we compared. Warmoesstraat and Kerkstraat each appear in three of the four, and the Amstel and Zeedijk in two. Bars do spread beyond these streets now: the Van Lennepbuurt in Oud-West is the area I amsterdam calls a relative newcomer, and Oost and De Pijp have one or two queer places each. None of the older areas has faded, but venues on them change hands often, so check that a place is still there before crossing town for it.

Reguliersdwarsstraat
This is where to start a first night. The local registry homohoreca.amsterdam lists Bar BLEND at 41 and its sister BLEND XL at 44, Cafe-club SoHo at 36, Taboo Bar at 45, Exit Cafe and Club NYX in the same building at 42, and Cafe Montmartre at 48. Montmartre moved here in February 2026 after 40 years on Halvemaansteeg and a short stay at number 129, so older guides are wrong about it. NYX is the big room, three floors and open until 05:00 at weekends. Exit is a small late bar next door, and it is where a lot of nights end. The RITA Community Center at 54 is the daytime counterpart.

Warmoesstraat and the Spuistraat side
The Eagle at Warmoesstraat 90 has been open since October 1979 and admits gay men only, on three levels, from 22:00. Dirty Dick's at 86 opens at 20:00 and is a fetish bar with a darkroom. RoB at 71 sells leather and rubber. Mister B left this street in 2018 and is now at Prinsengracht 192. West of the Damrak, Bears Amsterdam on Sint Jacobsstraat took over from The Web in May 2025, and The Cuckoo's Nest on Nieuwezijds Kolk has been a cruise bar since 1984. Drake's at Damrak 61 is a men's cruise club and cinema behind a shop, and Man to Man on Spuistraat combines a shop with a cinema. Warmoesstraat is explicitly outside the 2025 rule that makes bars in the core Wallen close at 02:00 on weekend nights, so the leather bars keep their late hours.

Kerkstraat, Amstel and Zeedijk
Club Church at Kerkstraat 52 is the theme-night cruise club, and the door is strict about the theme. Spijkerbar at number 4 has been open since 1979 and has a pool table. Lellebel on Utrechtsestraat has been the drag bar since 1997 and is trans and queer women-owned. Bar Nate nearby replaced Brug34 in 2025. On the Zeedijk, Cafe 't Mandje has been going since 1927, making it the oldest LGBT cafe in the city, and The Queen's Head at number 20 runs drag bingo on Tuesdays.

Women, queer and alternative
Saarein in the Jordaan has been a lesbian bar since 1978 and has pool tables. Bar Buka on Albert Cuypstraat calls itself the place "where girls meet" and has board games. PAMELA in Oud-West is a queer and BIPOC-focused bar and vegan kitchen. De Trut, a volunteer-run queer club on Bilderdijkstraat since 1985, opens on Sunday nights from 22:00 and bans phones. Club RAUM in the Westpoort docks is a queer techno club in a former bookbindery, well outside the centre.

The sauna
Sauna Nieuwezijds, open since 2013 near the Dam, is the only gay sauna left in Amsterdam. It has a dry sauna, steam room, hot tub, cabins and a bar, and it opens from noon. See the Amsterdam saunas guide.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
- The Web (Sint Jacobsstraat 6) closed in May 2025 and is now Bears Amsterdam.
- Free Willie, the naked bar at Amstel 178, has been closed since September 2026. The local registry calls that temporary, another directory says permanent, and we found no reopening date.
- TILLATEC, the queer-minded club in the former De School, held its closing weekend on 6-9 November 2026.
- B'Femme, the lesbian bar at Reguliersdwarsstraat 48, closed in November 2025. Bar Bario on Bilderdijkstraat closed in March 2026, and Lola the Green Aardvark in November 2025.
- Reality closed in June 2024 and Amstel Fifty Four in August 2024.
- Thermos, Cockring, Argos and Trouw are all long gone. Old lists still name them.
- The Golden Bear hotel now trades as Quentin Leidse Square and is no longer a gay hotel.

Pride & Events

Pride and events
WorldPride and EuroPride were held together in Amsterdam from 25 July to 8 August 2026. The Canal Parade on 1 August had about 80 boats and drew several hundred thousand people; the organisers gave no exact figure. Protesters briefly tried to block boats near the Prinsengracht and security was tightened after a vehicle attack at Berlin Pride a week earlier, but the parade ended without major incident. Pride Amsterdam returns to its usual nine days from 31 July to 8 August 2027, with the Canal Parade on Saturday 7 August, according to its own site.

Other dates: Roze Filmdagen runs 10-21 March 2027 for its 30th edition. King's Day is 27 April 2027, with street parties around Reguliersdwarsstraat and the Homomonument. Milkshake Festival was held on 25-26 July 2026, and its 2027 dates were not announced at the time of writing. Leather & Fetish Pride held its 30th edition in October 2026 and has not announced 2027. De Nieuwe Kerk on the Dam has an LGBTQ+ history exhibition, Queer Amsterdam, the Pink City, until 4 April 2027.

History

History worth an hour
The Homomonument on Westermarkt, three pink granite triangles unveiled in 1987, was the first monument of its kind. The Pink Point kiosk beside it gives out maps and tips; use pinkpoint.nl, because the old pinkpoint.org domain is now a gambling site. IHLIA, the LGBTI archive, is on the third floor of the central library at Oosterdokskade 143 and its exhibitions are free. Willem Arondeus, the openly gay artist who helped attack the population registry in 1943, is remembered by a plaque at Plantage Kerklaan.

Amistad at Kerkstraat 42 says outright that it welcomes LGBT guests and is the clearest gay-run option. Hotel Casa, a mainstream hotel in Oost, publishes an LGBTQIA+ statement. The Anco and ITC have long gay histories but make no statement on their current sites. Book months ahead for Pride. The hotels guide compares walking times. Amsterdam's tourist tax was 12.5% of the room price in 2026, and the council votes on 11-12 November 2026 on a plan to raise it to 16% in 2027.

Safety

Safety
Everyday life for gay visitors is relaxed, but don't take it for granted. Reports of discrimination or violence against LGBTQIA+ people in the Netherlands reached 4,800 in 2025, up 81% since 2022, and more than 70 discrimination reports reached the RITA platform during the opening weekend of WorldPride. The Oeverlanden lake shore in Nieuw-West saw nine violent incidents against gay men in two months in spring 2026. Public sex is an offence; the Vondelpark's 2008 tolerance policy is unconfirmed today, so don't rely on it. Keep the numbers handy: Roze in Blauw, the police LGBTQ+ network, is on +31 88 169 1234, and Switchboard is on +31 20 623 6565.

Getting Around

Getting around
Schiphol (AMS) is 14 to 17 minutes by train from Centraal and costs about EUR 6; tap in with a contactless card through OVpay. Trains run through the night roughly hourly, and the N97 night bus is hourly too. Everything named above in the centre is walkable. Coffeeshops are 18+, with a 5-gram limit, and smoking cannabis in public in the Wallen carries a EUR 100 fine.

A few words
Homobar means gay bar. Gezellig means cosy and sociable, and you will hear it constantly. Pinnen means to pay by card, which is the default almost everywhere. Gedogen means tolerating something that stays technically illegal.
