Disappointing Experience at Boots During Darklands – Misleading Pricing and a Very Quiet Bar I’ve visited Boots in Antwerp several times over the years, including during previous editions of Darklands. It has always been known as a long-standing members-only gay fetish bar with a reputation for being lively during fetish weekends. Unfortunately, our experience this year was extremely disappointing, both in terms of atmosphere and the way pricing was handled. We attended Boots this weekend during the Darklands festival. On arrival Thursday evening we paid €25 for what was described as a weekend membership. This was consistent with how things had worked when we visited previously – you paid a one-time membership fee and then only paid for drinks when returning later in the weekend. The bar was unusually quiet on Thursday, especially compared with previous Darklands Thursdays, but we assumed this might simply be because it was still early in the weekend. However, when we returned on Friday night, the situation was even more surprising. Not only was the bar again disappointingly quiet, but when we went to settle our bill we were told we had to pay another €25 entry fee. This was completely unexpected, as we believed the €25 we had paid the previous evening was a weekend membership, exactly as it had been during previous visits. When we questioned this, the owner explained that we should not expect to enter the bar during the fetish weekend for less. That explanation doesn’t hold up. In previous years (we last attended the event three years ago), this was not the pricing structure, and even comparable fetish venues during major events are far more transparent and reasonable. For example, the New Action bar on Berlin charges €10 during large fetish events such as Easter and Folsom Europe, and that even includes a drink. What was particularly frustrating was the lack of transparency. The membership form we filled out made no mention whatsoever of a recurring €25 nightly charge, and the owner claimed the pricing was displayed on the walls. If it is, it certainly isn’t obvious or prominent. After checking the Boots website later, the pricing page only refers to a €25 weekend membership, not a nightly cover charge. This leaves the strong impression that the pricing is deliberately unclear, which feels like opportunistic price gouging during the busiest fetish weekend of the year in Antwerp. Charging higher prices during major events is one thing. Doing so without making the structure clear upfront is another entirely. Between the unexpected repeat entry fees, the lack of transparency, and the surprisingly empty bar during Darklands, the experience felt poor value and left a very negative impression of a venue that used to be a reliable stop during the weekend. Sadly, this visit felt less like a welcoming fetish bar and more like a place relying on confusing pricing to maximise charges from visitors during the festival.

My recent experience at The Boots wasn't just disappointing; it was a textbook example of how to alienate customers through deceptive and contemptuous business practices. As a visitor for the Darklands festival, I was looking to support the local scene by avoiding the main parties. Instead, I was treated like a walking wallet whose memory span is supposedly limited to 48 hours. On Wednesday, I was charged a €25 "membership fee," which, according to the form I meticulously filled out, was meant to grant me reduced cover charges for the remainder of the weekend. Returning on Friday, I was hit with another €25 charge, just as I was leaving the bar, this time rebranded as a cover. When questioned, the logic (or lack thereof) Boots staff explained that during the Darklands weekend the usual membership fee structure does not apply. This wasn't a membership; it was a €25 entry fee on Wednesday, followed by a hidden €25 surcharge on Friday. There were no reminders of this upcoming cost, no signage, and certainly no transparency. It is a hidden pricing structure designed to ambush patrons at the end of the night. Ironically, on both nights, the bar was startlingly quiet comparing to years prior. It doesn't take a business degree to connect the dots. The deafening silence inside isn't due to a lack of clientele; it’s the sound of customers voting with their feet against being treated with such flagrant disrespect. If you enjoy hidden fees and being misled, by all means, give them your money. If you prefer to support establishments that value transparency and their customers, I would advise giving The Boots a very wide berth. I for sure won't be returning…

This has got to be one of the best fetish bars in the world. It is spacious, clean and well equipped. The barmen are friendly and the clientele are all up for a good time. Only a few of these places are left in the world. And it is really good to see this establishment has not only maintained the standards but also continue to attract a good crowd.

Very unclear pricing policy. Paid €25 for the weekend membership on Thursday. On Friday I was charge the €25 as cover fee. So it's hard to work out what the charging structure actually is. What was the €25 weekend membership for? It seems like they are just ripping of visitors in the city for the big event weekend.

I like the boots. It's big, clean, reasonably priced, easy to access by public transports of bike (although I wouldn't bike back home after the fistival), loooots of fun spaces and usually nice crowd inside. This review is also to mention to my fellow FTM brothers that the boots is very safe for us, and that if you're hesitating on going, here's the sign you've been looking for ;)
