The Nightingale opened in 1979 and has been the anchor of Birmingham's gay scene for 45 years — one of the longest continuously operating gay venues in the UK by any measure. The club occupies a purpose-built building on Thorp Street (adjacent to the Hurst Street gay village) with four floors and a capacity of approximately 1,100. Four floors means four distinct environments: the main floor runs pop and commercial dance; the cabaret lounge hosts drag and live entertainment; the upper floors cater to different subgroups within the gay community. The Nightingale's longevity is a result of consistent programming quality and an ability to adapt across five decades of change in LGBTQ+ culture. Birmingham Pride in late May fills the club to capacity and extends the party across the entire Hurst Street area. The Nightingale's weekly programming covers every night of the week, making it the most reliably accessible large gay club in the Midlands. Student discount available; the Birmingham university population is a significant part of the regular crowd.
