Mera has a team representing several countries, so the regular menu always presents a global feast. Sometimes, like last week, they organize a special country menu. In this case the feature was Burkina Faso, a country in the Sahel Region of West Africa. Drinks, both alcoholic and non, appetizers, main dishes, and desserts reflected this flavorful African cuisine. I found street parking in the neighborhood. Looking forward to the next special week.
My favorite restaurant in Baltimore and some of the best food in town. A social enterprise that engages in local community and sends meaningful proceeds to local groups. Great food, great staff, great cause.
We stopped by Mera Kitchen looking forward to trying something a little different, and while there were definitely some bright spots, the experience left us with mixed feelings. Let's start with the positive: the service was genuinely great. Friendly, attentive, and welcoming from beginning to end. Food-wise, it was a bit of a mixed bag. My son ordered the lentil soup, one of his favourite comfort foods. He thought the flavour was excellent but said it was a little too watery and could have used more substance to make it feel like a proper bowl of lentil soup. I went with the burger, and unfortunately it just didn't hit the mark for me. The patty was a little too thick, and the grilled tomatoes released so much juice that the entire burger turned into more of a Sloppy Joe than a burger. Every bite became an exercise in structural engineering, and the bun waved the white flag halfway through. The flavour combination also wasn't really to my taste. My wife ordered the Burkinabé plantain and avocado bowl. She enjoyed it, but for the price, we both expected a more generous portion. The biggest surprise, though, came when the bill arrived. A 20% gratuity had already been added. Now, I have no issue with restaurants including automatic gratuity—as long as it's made clear before the meal. Instead, our server quietly mentioned it as we were about to pay, almost in passing. I actually had to ask him to repeat himself because I thought I'd misheard. Sure enough, there it was. After looking back at the menu, I found it tucked away in a corner where most people probably wouldn't think to look. That's really the part that rubbed us the wrong way. If gratuity is automatically included, just let guests know when they're seated. It's a simple courtesy and avoids an awkward surprise at the end of what should be an enjoyable meal. Overall, we were hovering around a 3.5-star experience based on the food and service alone, but the way the gratuity was handled knocked it down to a solid 3 stars. A little more transparency would go a long way.
