Serra do Cipó is one of Minas Gerais' most loved outdoor getaways — a stretch of waterfalls, canyons and high-altitude cerrado grassland straddling the municipality of Santana do Riacho, roughly 100 km (a two-hour drive) north-east of Belo Horizonte. It is a place people come to for hiking, swimming in natural pools and slow weekends in a pousada, not for bars and clubs. There is no gay village, no gay sauna and no dedicated LGBTQ+ nightlife here, and this guide will not pretend otherwise. What Serra do Cipó does offer queer travellers is a genuinely relaxed, welcoming base of small guesthouses in a spectacular natural setting.

Is it gay-friendly?

Brazil recognises same-sex marriage nationwide (since 2013) and has broad anti-discrimination protections, and Minas Gerais tourism towns like Serra do Cipó are used to receiving visitors of every kind. The pousadas listed here present themselves as welcoming to all guests; same-sex couples checking in together is unremarkable. As anywhere in rural Brazil, discretion and common sense are sensible, but travellers consistently describe the area as friendly and easy-going.

The pousadas cluster in two areas: around the village of Lapinha da Serra (quieter, higher up, near the Lapinha valley) and along the MG-010 road and Rua da Pedreira closer to the national park entrance and the famous Véu da Noiva waterfall. Options run from simple family-run guesthouses to comfortable eco-pousadas with pools and mountain views; many earn very high guest ratings. Book ahead for long weekends and Brazilian holidays, when the area fills up.

What to do

The Serra do Cipó National Park protects canyons, waterfalls and endemic wildlife. Classic outings include the Véu da Noiva waterfall, the Cânion das Bandeirinhas, the Cachoeira da Farofa trail and the Lapinha valley walks. Guides and local drivers can be arranged through most pousadas. Mornings are for trails and swimming holes; evenings are quiet — dinner at your pousada or one of the small restaurants along the MG-010, then an early night before the next hike.

Where's the nightlife?

For gay bars, clubs and a sauna you'll want Belo Horizonte, the Minas Gerais state capital about two hours away, which has the region's LGBTQ+ venues and hosts Belo Horizonte's Pride parade. Many visitors combine a couple of nights in the city with a few days unwinding in Serra do Cipó. If you're driving between the two, the trip is straightforward.

Getting there

Most travellers arrive by car from Belo Horizonte (via the MG-010) or by regional bus to Santana do Riacho / Serra do Cipó, with pousadas arranging pickups. A car makes it far easier to reach the trailheads and waterfalls, which are spread out along the range.
