Gay Ahmedabad: The Honest 2026 Guide

The honest summary: Ahmedabad is a city of about 5.6 million people (2011 census; the metro area is now estimated at 8 to 9 million) on the Sabarmati river, and since 2017 its walled old city has been India's first UNESCO World Heritage City. It is also dry, mostly vegetarian and socially conservative. In October 2026 we could not find a gay bar, gay club, gay café or gay sauna anywhere in the city, and we searched in English, Gujarati and Hindi and checked the international gay guides. A December 2023 guide puts it bluntly: there are "no exclusively gay bars". What Ahmedabad does have is an organised community. The Gandhinagar Queer Pride Foundation runs Pride walks, a queer prom, café meetups and art nights in the city, and QueerAbad has hosted talks and Pride marches since 2016. If you want a gay bar, Mumbai is about five and a half hours away by Vande Bharat train.

Legal in one line: Consensual sex between adults of the same sex has been legal in India since the Supreme Court read down Section 377 on 6 September 2018 (Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India), and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the criminal code in force since 1 July 2024, has no equivalent offence. Same-sex marriage and civil unions are not recognised (Supreme Court, 17 October 2023). Trans people have legal recognition under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2019, and Gujarat set up a Transgender Welfare Board in 2019. One new item: on 24 March 2026 the Gujarat Assembly passed a Uniform Civil Code that makes live-in relationships registrable, and reports say its marriage and live-in rules are written for a man and a woman. We could not confirm when it takes effect.

Why there are no gay bars

Gujarat has been under prohibition since the Bombay Prohibition Act of 1949, which the state kept when it was formed in 1960. There are no pubs or cocktail bars in Ahmedabad, so the bar culture that anchors gay scenes in Mumbai, Bengaluru or Delhi has nothing to grow from. A few hotel lounges and "disc" clubs on SG Highway and Drive-In Road (Encore, Rewind, Sphere Lounge, Amnesia) run dance nights without a public bar. They are mainstream places. Encore hosted one Gandhinagar Queer Pride Foundation party in June 2025, but none of them is a gay venue and we don't list them as one.

Not a bar: map searches for "gay club Ahmedabad" turn up "Pulse Aviel Solutions Private Limited" in Fairdeal House, Navrangpura. It is a registered company, not a bar or club, and older copies of this guide were wrong to list it.

Alcohol, permits and GIFT City

If you want a drink, you need a permit. According to a 2026 guide to Gujarat's liquor rules, foreign passport holders can get a free tourist permit valid for up to a month, and visitors from other Indian states can get a visitor's permit for a week (₹20 application plus ₹200), extendable to a month. Alcohol is sold only at licensed permit shops, which are usually inside larger hotels, and you drink it in private, typically in your room. Drinking or carrying alcohol without a permit is an offence, so keep the permit with any bottle.

GIFT City, the financial district near Gandhinagar, is the one exception that looks like a night out. Its hotels and restaurants have been allowed to serve alcohol since December 2023, and under a notification of 20 December 2025 visitors from outside Gujarat and foreign nationals can drink at the licensed outlets by showing photo ID. The metro has reached GIFT City since September 2024. It is a business-crowd scene, not a gay one.

Where the queer community actually meets

Ahmedabad has groups rather than venues, and their events are announced on Instagram and allevents.

Gandhinagar Queer Pride Foundation (GQPF): a youth- and trans-led group founded in 2019 that works across Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. It organised the Ahmedabad Pride walk on 18 February 2024 and listed another for 15 February 2026. Its 2026 calendar included a Queer Prom Night on 14 February, a "Come and Get Tea" café meetup on 7 June, Satrangi Mehfil, an evening of queer art and music at the Alliance Française on 27 June, and a game night in August. Tickets were ₹50 to ₹629. It also runs free HIV and STI testing camps with the Family Planning Association of India. Follow @gqpfoundation or write to connect@gqpfoundation.org.

QueerAbad: founded in June 2016 by Anahita Sarabhai and Shamini Kothari as a safe space for conversations about queer life in the city. It ran the "Ask What You Will" question evenings, readings and screenings, published booklets in Gujarati and English, and organised the 2018 and 2019 Pride marches. Its Instagram (@queerabad) has been quiet since February 2025, so treat it as a contact rather than a calendar.

Cultural venues have been friendly ground for one-off events: the Darpana Academy in Usmanpura and the Kanoria Centre for Arts (2018 and 2019 marches), the Alliance Française (2026) and the Evoke Centre for Arts, which staged the queer dance work SAMAAJ in June 2026. None of them is a queer venue.

Pride in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad Pride doesn't happen every year and has no fixed date, though February is the usual month. The city's first march was on 1 December 2013, from the Income Tax building towards Gandhi Ashram, and another followed on 1 December 2014. QueerAbad revived it on 18 February 2018, with about 200 people walking from the Kanoria Centre for Arts to the Darpana Academy, and again on 24 February 2019 from Ankur Char Rasta. GQPF held a walk on 18 February 2024 and listed one for 15 February 2026, but we found no news report confirming the 2026 walk took place. In 2025 the Gujarat march was held in Vadodara instead. Nothing had been announced for 2027 at the time of writing. Gujarat's first Pride march was in Surat in October 2013.

Saunas, spas and cruising

There is no gay sauna or bathhouse in Ahmedabad. The "male to male spa" listings that fill map searches around CG Road and Navrangpura are massage businesses, not gay saunas. Gujarat police have repeatedly raided spas in the city, and sex work around them is illegal, so we don't list them. GayOut doesn't publish outdoor cruising spots in India. Use the apps instead, carefully.

Staying safe

Robbery and extortion through gay dating apps are a documented problem in Gujarat. Ahmedabad police arrested a Grindr robbery gang in February 2022 that had targeted 15 to 20 men. In June 2026 police in Surendranagar district arrested seven men who used the Polo app to lure a man to an abandoned house, and in August 2026 Surat police broke up another Polo gang. Meet new contacts only in busy public places such as a mall food court or a hotel lobby café, tell a friend where you're going, and don't go to half-built buildings or isolated spots. Be wary of anyone who claims to be police and demands money. Call 112 in an emergency.

Public affection between men draws stares in most of the city, so keep it discreet. International chain hotels are the easiest choice for same-sex couples sharing a room; some small guesthouses refuse unmarried couples of any kind. India's drug laws are very strict.

Where to stay

For old-city sightseeing, The House of MG, a 1920s merchant's mansion opposite the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, and The Cama on the riverfront at Khanpur put you within walking distance of the pols. Hyatt Regency on Ashram Road and Four Points by Sheraton at Ellisbridge are central and close to the Sabarmati Riverfront. The big western hotels (ITC Narmada and Hyatt in Vastrapur, Novotel on SG Highway, Taj Skyline on Sindhu Bhavan Road and the Renaissance in Sola) sit near the newer cafés and malls but are 20 to 40 minutes from the old city. Large international chains are the simplest choice for same-sex couples. Some of them have a permit liquor shop; a 2020 state list included Hyatt Vastrapur and Novotel. None of these is a gay hotel. Pride Plaza Hotel on Judges Bungalow Road belongs to India's Pride Hotels chain and has nothing to do with LGBTQ+ Pride.

Getting around

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) is about 10 km from the centre, 25 to 40 minutes by road. In June 2025 Air India flight AI171 crashed in Meghaninagar shortly after take-off, killing 260 people; the airport is fully operational. The metro was completed in January 2026 and runs about 67 km on four lines, including the line to Gandhinagar and GIFT City. The BRTS Janmarg buses, auto-rickshaws and app cabs cover the rest. Mumbai is about 490 km away: roughly 5.5 hours by Vande Bharat train or 1 hour 15 minutes by air. The bullet train is not running yet; its first section is due in 2027, and only around Surat. Vadodara, home of Lakshya Trust, is about 110 km south by expressway.

What to see

The walled old city is the reason to come: hundreds of pols (gated lanes of carved wooden houses), the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque with its stone tree-of-life screen, Bhadra Fort and Teen Darwaza. The municipal heritage walk starts early in the morning at the Swaminarayan Temple in Kalupur. Sabarmati Ashram, Gandhi's base from 1917 to 1930, is being redeveloped, so check what's open. Adalaj stepwell is about 18 km north. In the evening, walk the Sabarmati Riverfront, then eat at Manek Chowk, a jewellery square by day and a food market at night.

When to go

November to February is the comfortable season, with warm days and cool nights. April to June is fiercely hot, often above 40°C. Uttarayan, the kite festival on 14 January, fills every roof. Navratri brings nine nights of garba dancing; in 2027 it runs from about 30 September. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.

A few words of Gujarati

Kem cho? – How are you? (the standard greeting)
Aabhar / Dhanyavaad – Thank you
Haa / Naa – Yes / No
Kitna? (Hindi) / Ketla? – How much?
Pol – a gated old-city lane
Satrangi – seven-coloured, rainbow (as in Satrangi Mehfil)
Daru-bandhi – prohibition, the alcohol ban

At a glance

Gay bars: none (dry state)
Gay sauna: none
Main group: Gandhinagar Queer Pride Foundation (@gqpfoundation), Pride walks and monthly socials
Pride: usually February, not every year; 2027 not announced
Alcohol: permit only; permit-free for visitors with ID in GIFT City
Airport: AMD, about 10 km from the centre
Nearest gay bars: Mumbai, about 5.5 hours by train
