The honest summary: Nicosia (Lefkosia), the capital of Cyprus and the last divided capital in Europe, is where the island's LGBTQ+ politics and community life happen, but not its nightlife. There is no fully gay bar in the city, no gay sauna and no gay district. What there is: Ithaki, a gay-popular bar by Famagusta Gate; Cyprus Pride, which set a record of about 6,000 marchers in June 2026; a September LGBTQ+ film festival; and a run of queer nights and community events in the walled old town. Come for Pride or Queer Wave week and you'll find the community. On a random Tuesday you'll find a pleasant old town and not much else.
Legal in one line: legal since 1998, equal age of consent (17) since 2002, civil partnerships since December 2015, conversion practices banned since 2023; no same-sex marriage, no joint adoption and no gender-recognition law yet. The north (where the Republic's laws don't apply) decriminalised only in January 2014.
Bars and nights out
Ithaki at Nikiforou Foka 33, just inside the walls near Famagusta Gate, is the place most LGBTQ+ locals will send you. It isn't exclusively gay; Travel Gay lists it for an LGBT crowd at weekends and a Friday gay night called "Think Outside the Box", and Accept – LGBTI Cyprus used it for the official Cyprus Pride pre-party in 2024 and 2025. Listings disagree on opening days (Google shows Wednesday and Friday from 21:00, other guides Wednesday to Saturday until 02:00–03:00), so check its Instagram first.
Beyond Ithaki, queer nightlife in Nicosia runs as events rather than venues. Queer Collective CY runs Queeraoke, Queer Kafene evenings and a book club, in 2026 at Yalla Cafe and other old-town spots; follow @queercollectivecy. The Pride after-party has been held at Centra night club on Evagorou Avenue, and the S//IP techno club on Theofanous Theodotou has a written zero-tolerance policy on homophobia, but both are mainstream clubs, not gay ones. The old-town café strip around Faneromeni, Onasagorou Street and Ledra Street is relaxed and mixed.
The island's only fully LGBTQ+ bar, according to Accept, is Lube Bar in Larnaca, about 45 minutes away by car. Limassol has gay-friendly bars and a gay beach.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
- Versus Club and Scorpios Platinum Club appear in older blog lists as Nicosia's gay clubs. We found no trace of either operating today.
- DownTown Live (Strovolos) hosted a monthly drag night around 2021–22. It is now a rock and Greek live-music venue with no queer programming we could find, so we no longer list it.
- Zoo Club and Metropole Retro Club were mainstream clubs; in 2022 a gay couple reported being thrown out of Metropole for kissing. Don't go expecting a gay night.
- Cyprus Pride, organised by Accept – LGBTI Cyprus since 2014, is a Saturday march in late May or early June ending at the Nicosia Municipal Gardens, with a festival programme around it. 2025 was 31 May; 2026 was 6 June, with about 6,000 marchers according to the organisers. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.
- United by Pride, run by Queer Collective CY, is a bicommunal march in the autumn: two groups set off at the same time from Eleftheria Square in the south and Kuğulu Park in the north and meet in the UN buffer zone (27 September 2025, 10 October 2026).
- Queer Wave, the Cyprus LGBTQIA+ film festival, runs for ten days each September at NiMAC, the municipal arts centre in a former power station in the old town (12–21 September 2025, 18–27 September 2026). The 2027 dates hadn't been announced.
- Accept – LGBTI Cyprus (accept.cy, +357 99 812343), founded 2009, runs Pride and most of the advocacy in the south. It doesn't publish a walk-in address, so contact it first.
- Cy Checkpoint, run by the AIDS Solidarity Movement in the old town, offers free, anonymous HIV and syphilis tests on Tuesday evenings by appointment, and a PrEP Point opened in 2025.
- Since October 2025 PrEP is free through the state service, with afternoon clinics at Nicosia General Hospital (22 603 550); no GESY referral is needed. The national HIV clinic, Gregorios, is at Larnaca General Hospital.
- Queer Cyprus Association (Kuir Kıbrıs Derneği, queercyprus.org) works in the north and runs a Solidarity Line.
- Getting there: Nicosia has no working airport of its own. Fly into Larnaca (LCA), about 50 km away; the Kapnos Airport Shuttle runs roughly hourly to Kyrenias Avenue in 40–50 minutes. Ercan in the north is not recognised internationally and is reached only via Turkey.
- Crossing to the north: the Ledra Street crossing is pedestrian and normally open around the clock. EU citizens can use a national ID card; everyone else needs a passport. There is no stamp. Same-sex couples are legal there too, but the north is noticeably more conservative and in 2026 its authorities declared a "Year of the Family".
- Public affection: Cyprus is socially conservative and Orthodox Church influence is strong. Holding hands in the old town or at Pride is fine; be more discreet in residential suburbs and villages.
- Nights start late. Bars fill after 23:00 and weekends are the only reliable nights.
- Γεια σου (yia sou): hello
- Ευχαριστώ (efcharistó): thank you
- ΛΟΑΤΚΙ+ (LOATKI+): the Greek acronym for LGBTQI+
- Υπερηφάνεια (iperifánia): Pride

Saunas and cruising
There is no gay sauna in Nicosia and we found no recent source for one. The old Ottoman bathhouse, Hamam Omerye, is an ordinary day spa. Cyprus has no gay sauna anywhere since Larnaca's closed in 2022. We don't list outdoor cruising areas here: the only mentions we found are undated and unconfirmed. Most men use Grindr and similar apps, which work normally in the south.
Pride and events
The north holds its own Pride in May around IDAHOBIT, organised by the Queer Cyprus Association; we couldn't confirm recent dates.

Community, health and support
Where to stay
For walking to Ithaki, the Pride route and the old town, stay inside or right next to the walls: Centrum Hotel on Eleftheria Square, Gate22, Amyth of Nicosia, The Classic near Paphos Gate, or MAP Boutique Hotel on Stasinou Avenue. The Landmark (the former Hilton) and Semeli are south of the centre and have pools. None of these is a gay hotel; see the full hotel list.
