The honest summary: Philadelphia's gay bars are almost all inside the Gayborhood, a few blocks of Center City around 13th and Locust, so a bar crawl here means walking a minute or two between doors. There's a big club (Woody's), a century-old piano bar (Tavern on Camac), a leather bar, an after-hours club, a handful of neighbourhood bars, and since 2026 a lesbian bar again, in Queen Village. Last call is 2am everywhere by state law.
The big nights
- Woody's (202 S 13th St) is where most visitors start. It has been at 13th and Walnut since 1980 and runs across two floors with several DJ rooms, the Glöbar neon dance lounge and the Rosewood, an Art Deco cocktail lounge next door at 1300-02 Walnut with DJ nights on Mondays. Google lists it open from 19:00 to 02:00 most nights. Expect a line and a young, mixed crowd on Fridays and Saturdays, and reviews that complain about the door; go before 11pm if you want space.
- Voyeur (1221 St James St) is the after-hours room. It opens Thursday to Sunday and runs until about 4am on Friday and Saturday, so it fills when the 2am bars empty. Several floors, DJs, drag and country line dancing on Fridays. It's a private club, which means visitors pay a guest fee; bring ID and cash.
- 254 (254 S 12th St) is the building that was iCandy until 2018, then Tabu, and has been 254 since October 2024. Three floors: a sports bar, a drag and dance floor, and a roof deck. Wednesday's burlesque night is free.
- Dolphin Tavern (1539 S Broad St), south of the Gayborhood, is a former go-go bar that now hosts queer and mixed dance parties under neon, usually on Friday and Saturday from 9pm. Check the promoter before you go; the crowd changes with the party.
- Tavern on Camac (243 S Camac St) has been a gay space since 1925 and is the oldest in the city. It reopened in July 2025 after a year's renovation. Downstairs is a restaurant and piano bar where people sing along to show tunes; upstairs, Ascend is the club floor. No cover, open daily from 16:00.
- The Little Gay Pub (102 S 13th St) opened in May 2025 as the Philadelphia branch of the DC original: cocktails, a roof deck and a relaxed pub crowd at the Chestnut end of the strip.
- U Bar (1220 Locust St) is the former Uncles. It's small, regulars-heavy and open from 11:00 every day, so it works for an afternoon beer.
- Knock (225 S 12th St) is a restaurant and bar owned by Bill Wood, the original "Woody". Dinner first, then piano and Broadway nights or drag karaoke on Wednesdays.
- Franky Bradley's (1320 Chancellor St) is a retro-styled bar and kitchen in the space that was the lesbian club Sisters until 2013. Burlesque, drag competitions and DJs happen in the adjoining B.West room. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 16:00.
- Bar X (255 S Camac St), on the site of the old Venture Inn, is minority-owned with a mostly Black crowd, drag karaoke and a basement dance floor at weekends. In August 2026 a neighbourhood nonprofit sued to have it closed as a nuisance; it was trading at the time of writing.
- Val's (605 S 3rd St, Queen Village) opened on 18 March 2026, the first dedicated lesbian bar in the city since Toasted Walnut closed in 2021. Cocktails, DJs, trivia and pop-ups for queer women, trans and nonbinary people and friends. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 16:00.
- Stir Lounge (1705 Chancellor St) near Rittenhouse Square has been lesbian-owned for about 20 years. The crowd is mixed, with WNBA watch parties and cheap "Stirsdays".
- Bob & Barbara's (1509 South St) is a cheap mainstream dive with one of the longest-running drag shows in Philadelphia, every Thursday.
- Dirty Franks (347 S 13th St) is the classic art-covered dive at 13th and Pine, mixed and friendly rather than gay.
- Warehouse on Watts (923 N Watts St), north of Center City, is an event space that hosts regular queer parties.
- Bars close at 2am. After that it's Voyeur or Club Philly, the 24-hour bathhouse on Chancellor Street.
- Most bars have no cover; Voyeur charges a guest fee, and big party nights at Woody's or 254 may too.
- For the week's drag shows and parties, check Philly Gay Calendar or our events tab.
- The Philly Pride Visitor Center at 1139 Locust St has maps and listings if you want help planning a night.
Bars to drink and talk

Leather
The Bike Stop (206 S Quince St) has been Philadelphia's leather bar since 1982. The street-level bar is easy for anyone to walk into; the basement hosts gear, jock and fetish nights, and clubs like the Philly Phisters hold socials here. Some nights have dress codes, so check the calendar. Open daily from 16:00, and the drinks are cheap.
Women and queer-women's bars
Marsha's, the queer women's sports bar on South Street, closed on 18 October 2026.

Gay-friendly, worth knowing
Closed or changed
Cockatoo (closed late 2024), Level Up (February 2025), Toasted Walnut (2021), Boxers PHL (2020), the Venture Inn (2016) and Sisters (2013) are gone. Tabu is now 254, Uncles is U Bar, and Concourse Dance Bar on Market Street is a mainstream club, not a gay one.
