Rochester sits on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, where the Genesee River drops over High Falls right in the middle of town. Winters are long and snowy and lake-effect grey, which may explain why a hot steam room has kept its place in the city's gay life for so long. Summers are green and easy, with Highland Park in bloom, Pride marching up South Avenue and a paper plate of hot dogs, mac salad and meat sauce at two in the morning. The sauna scene itself is simple: there is one gay bathhouse, Rochester Spa & Body Club, downtown on Liberty Pole Way, and it stays open around the clock at weekends. Around it, a small but lively bar scene has been reshuffling, with one new club, one rebrand and one loss in the past year.
Legal in one line: same-sex sex has been legal in New York since the state's highest court struck down its sodomy law in People v. Onofre (1980); same-sex marriage has been legal since July 2011; the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA, 2019) protects gender identity and expression; and since 2025 the state constitution's Equal Rights Amendment covers sexual orientation and gender identity. Sex in public places is a crime (see below).
Rochester Spa & Body Club: the city's gay bathhouse
Rochester Spa & Body Club (RSBC, or the "Roc Spa" on Instagram, @therocspa) is at 109 Liberty Pole Way, Rochester, NY 14604, on the edge of downtown. It calls itself "Western NY's Legendary Bathhouse", and its website says it welcomes "like-minded men" from Rochester, Toronto, the Southern Tier, Syracuse and further afield. Its own job listings and an event planned for Halloween weekend 2026 show it is open and trading in autumn 2026.
What's inside: the venue lists a sauna, a steam room, a sun deck, a variety of lounges and video rooms. You rent either a private room (for 8 hours) or a locker (for 6 hours), and room extensions are available.
How it works: greet the attendant at the window, sign in and pay, and you are buzzed in and handed your key and a towel. The website stresses that it never charges a membership fee. Bring photo ID: you need it for the under-30 deal, and it's wise to carry it anyway.
Hours (as listed on its website in October 2026):
- Monday to Thursday: 10:00 to midnight.
- Friday to Sunday: open 24 hours.
- Bachelor Forum → Forum 73. Rochester's long-running gay bar on University Avenue, opened in 1973, closed on 1 January 2026 for reorganisation and reopened as Forum 73 in June 2026. Older maps still show the old name.
- The Avenue Pub, the LGBTQ+ bar on Monroe Avenue, closed in late 2025 after about 50 years; its owner cited safety concerns and rising costs.
- Out Alliance (formerly the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley) suspended operations in June 2020. Its community centre and library reopened in 2023 under volunteers now trading as the Rochester Rainbow Union (see below).
- Flora, 190 Monroe Avenue in the Wadsworth Square area, is the newcomer: a queer bar and events space with a dance floor, opened in late 2025 by business partners Tom DeBlase and Tanner Efinger. When it opened it was reported open Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 16:00 to midnight and Friday and Saturday from 16:00 to 02:00, with a DJ from Friday to Sunday. It's the closest of the three to the bathhouse.
- ROAR, on Culver Road, has been running since 2019, with trivia, karaoke, dinner shows, brunches, live bands, comedy and club nights with drag. Check its social media for the week's line-up.
- Forum 73, on University Avenue in the Neighborhood of the Arts, is the old Bachelor Forum. It opened in 1973 on East Main Street, moved to University Avenue in 1989 and reopened under its new name in June 2026, open daily from 14:00 to 02:00 at the time of the relaunch.
- Trillium Health, 259 Monroe Avenue (Monroe Square), is the city's LGBTQ+-affirming health centre, offering STI testing, PrEP and PEP, HIV care and transgender care. Its sexual health clinic offers same-day appointments and accepts walk-ins when it has space. Clinical hours are Monday to Thursday 08:00–18:00 and Friday 08:00–17:00; phone 585 545 7200. There is free parking.
- The MOCHA Center, which serves LGBTQ+ people of colour, is at 470 West Main Street (weekdays 09:00–17:00).
- Rochester Rainbow Union and the Lilac Library. Rochester's organised gay movement goes back to the Gay Liberation Front at the University of Rochester, whose newsletter The Empty Closet (1971–2020) became one of the longest-running LGBTQ+ papers in the US. Its later home, Out Alliance, shut down in 2020. In 2023 its collection of more than 10,000 books and other media reopened as the Lilac Library at 50 Prince Street (entrance on College Avenue), now run by the volunteer-led Rochester Rainbow Union. Its 2025 update listed library hours as Sundays 14:00–16:00 and Wednesdays 18:00–20:00; check before you visit.
- Cash: the bathhouse is cash only (there's an ATM inside). Bars take cards, but carry some cash for tips and cover charges.
- ID and ages: carry photo ID. You must be 21 to drink in New York; the bathhouse's under-30 locker deal starts at 18.
- Getting around: Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) is a short drive from downtown, and Amtrak trains stop at Rochester station. RTS buses cover the city by day, but late at night use Uber, Lyft or a taxi. Rochester is a car city; the bathhouse has free parking out back.
- Weather: winters are cold, and lake-effect snow can close roads. Allow extra time from November to March.
- Apps: Grindr and the other apps are busy here, with students from the city's universities. Meet in public first and tell a friend where you're going.
- Sexual health: PEP must start within 72 hours of exposure. In office hours go to Trillium Health; at night or at weekends, go to a hospital emergency department.
- Trans travellers: New York's GENDA protects gender identity and expression in housing, employment and public accommodations, so you are covered by state law at venues across Rochester.
- Plate – the local late-night meal; the original is the Garbage Plate.
- Hots – hot dogs, as in Nick Tahou Hots. A white hot is the pale local version.
- ROC – Rochester, from its airport code; you'll see it everywhere, from ROC Pride to the Roc Spa.
- NOTA – the Neighborhood of the Arts, around University Avenue.
- The Southern Tier – the counties along the Pennsylvania border, south of the Finger Lakes.
- Lake-effect – the heavy snow that blows in off Lake Ontario.
- Locker or room? – what the attendant asks you at the bathhouse window.
Prices: room and locker rates are not published online. It is cash only, but there is an ATM next to the attendant's window. Under-30s get a deal: half-price lockers for ages 18 to 30, with ID, on Mondays and Tuesdays. Call 585 454 1074 or email the club to check current rates.
Getting there: the club says free parking is available in the monitored lots behind the building, and that it sits next to the Midtown redevelopment, surrounded by offices, apartments, bars and restaurants. Downtown is compact, so it is walkable from the central hotels.
When to go: weekends, when the doors stay open all night, are the obvious choice for visitors. Its health page was written with Monroe County's health department and Trillium Health during the 2022 mpox outbreak, and the club says rooms are sanitised and linens washed hot with bleach.
Changed or closed nearby:
Keep it inside. Under New York Penal Law §245.00, public lewdness, meaning exposing yourself in a lewd way or any other lewd act in a public place (or somewhere you can readily be seen from one), is a class B misdemeanour. If you go looking for outdoor spots, remember that parks and restrooms are patrolled, robberies of men meeting strangers do happen, and an arrest record can follow you. Go with a friend's knowledge, carry little cash and no valuables, and stick to well-used areas. On the apps, meet first in a public place.

A Rochester night
No night out in Rochester is complete without a Garbage Plate. It was born at Nick Tahou Hots on West Main Street, founded in 1918 by Greek immigrant Alexander Tahou: two sides, chosen from home fries, French fries, macaroni salad and baked beans, topped with hot dogs or burgers, mustard, onions and a spicy meat sauce, with buttered bread on the side. College students named it in the 1980s and the restaurant trademarked "Garbage Plate" in 1991, so elsewhere in town you'll see "plates" under other names. Check Nick Tahou's hours before you go: the downtown original has kept shorter hours for years, while many plate joints stay open late. Eat after the bars, then sweat it off in the steam room, or the other way round.
In daylight, walk down to High Falls to see the Genesee River tumble through the city, or stroll Highland Park, famous for its lilacs and home to the Pride festival.
