Gay Bars & Nightlife in Charlottetown
Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island's capital, has one of the most charming small nightlife scenes in Atlantic Canada — and, since 2025, it finally has a gay bar to call its own. For years the island was one of the last places in Canada without a single dedicated LGBTQ+ venue; locals and visitors relied on welcoming mainstream pubs, Pride events, and word of mouth. That changed with the arrival of Be You Bar, which gave the community a permanent home base right in the walkable downtown core.
Where the Scene Is
Charlottetown does not have a defined gay village. The action is concentrated in the compact downtown around Grafton, Kent, Queen and Great George streets, where you can walk between the queer bar, gay-friendly restaurants, and the waterfront in a few minutes. The city's small size means the scene is social and word-of-mouth driven — following Pride PEI and Be You Bar on social media is the quickest way to find out what's on.
Be You Bar — PEI's First Queer Bar
Be You Bar (119 Grafton St) opened in August 2025 as Prince Edward Island's first dedicated 2SLGBTQIA+ bar, and it has quickly become the anchor of the local scene. Part nightclub, part relaxed lounge, it hosts live drag shows, midweek karaoke, and themed queer nights that draw a friendly mix of locals, students, and travellers. There is no dress code and a genuine come-as-you-are spirit. If you only have one night out in Charlottetown, this is where to spend it — start with a drink, catch a show, and meet people in Canada's smallest provincial capital.
Gay-Friendly Alternatives
Beyond the dedicated bar, much of downtown Charlottetown is comfortably welcoming. The Charlottetown Beer Garden & Seafood Patio (190 Kent St) is a popular warm-weather spot with the city's largest outdoor terrace, craft beer, fresh seafood, and live music — not a gay venue, but an easy, friendly place for a drink or a meal. Gastropubs and cocktail rooms such as Slaymaker & Nichols (82 Fitzroy St) round out the options for a relaxed night that isn't focused on nightlife alone. Note that Playmaker's Club, a north-end sports and games bar, is a mainstream venue with no particular LGBTQ+ focus.
Pride and Events
The biggest dates on the calendar belong to the PEI Pride Festival, organised by Pride PEI each year in late July (the 2026 edition runs roughly July 24 to August 2, with the parade on Saturday, July 25 and the Rainbow Road street party on Kent Street). Around the festival and throughout the year, Pride PEI programs queer events such as the Queer AF comedy show and drag revues at venues like The Guild. For community connections outside of nightlife, PEERS Alliance runs a regular 2SLGBTQ+ adult drop-in downtown.
Practical Tips for Your Night Out
Getting There
Downtown Charlottetown is very walkable, and Be You Bar and the main gay-friendly venues are within easy strolling distance of most accommodations. Taxis and ride-sharing are available for longer trips; late-night public transit is limited, so plan ahead.
Dress Code
There is no strict dress code. Casual is perfectly fine, and you'll fit in whether you dress up or keep it relaxed. Comfort and self-expression are the rule.
Ages
The legal drinking age in Prince Edward Island is 19, and venues will check ID at the door. Expect a broad mix of adults, skewing a little younger on drag and karaoke nights.
Safety
Canada has strong LGBTQ+ legal protections and Charlottetown is a friendly, low-crime city. As anywhere on a night out, stay aware of your surroundings, keep an eye on your drink, and talk to staff if you ever feel uncomfortable.
