About this place Tamarack Lodge & Resort

Tamarack Lodge is a mainstream mountain lodge, gay-friendly but not a gay venue. The original 1924 lodge sits on Lower Twin Lake in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, with lodge rooms and a set of cabins spread through the trees, an on-site restaurant, and a cross-country ski center that turns into hiking and paddling territory in summer. It is a few miles uphill from the Village, so it suits people who want lakes and trails rather than après-ski bars. The 4.6 rating across nearly a thousand reviews is a fair guide. Winter access depends on road conditions, so check before driving up after a storm.

We stayed at Tamarack lodge last weekend. To my surprise the location was too good but lodge itself is not that good. The room was too small for the price with dusty sheets and very less anmmenties and the cleaning staff was unhelpful. They refused to clean shared washrooms with the tag ‘no English’ . The complimentary breakfast was also too basic. With the price provided for each stay, the room and service was totally unjustified.

Area: Beautiful. Great for relaxing, walking, hiking, biking etc. Staff: Great. Everyone was friendly and eager to assist. Price: We paid over $950 for three days in a VERY rustic single room cabin--you decide. Cabin: Warped floor, small bathroom & kitchen. Food: Does not match the environment. Dinner choices: 1) Superaliment Tower - $45, 2) Seared Duck Breast - $58, 3) Poisson Frais Du Jour - $58, 4) Elk Medallions a La Planche - $60, 5) Filet De Boeuf Wellington - $70. Seems overkill for people who are basically deluxe camping. IMHO should be high-quality basics (Burgers, steaks, ribs, pasta, fried chicken, hot/cold deli sandwiches, salads, fries, etc.), for the price you're paying. Overall: We would stay again but would pay the higher price for a larger cabin. I get it, it's Mammoth Lakes, expect to pay more.
