旅遊指南
出發前值得了解的一切資訊。
The honest summary: Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree, a city of about 155,000 people in Far North Queensland, and it does not have a gay bar. Travel Gay says so plainly ("Cairns itself doesn't have any specific gay bars or nightclubs"), and we could not find a single independent source naming one that is open in 2026. What the city does have is one men's cruise club in the CBD, a Pride festival every October that has run since 2006, a Queensland Council for LGBTI Health office, and a famous adults-only LGBTQIA+ resort 40 minutes up the coast. Mainstream Cairns is relaxed and used to tourists, so most visitors simply go out where everyone else goes.
Legal in one line: Queensland decriminalised sex between men in 1990 (the law took effect on 19 January 1991), same-sex marriage has been legal across Australia since December 2017, and discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity is unlawful under federal and Queensland law.
Where things are
Cairns City is the compact grid between the Esplanade and Cairns Central. Almost everything a visitor needs sits within a ten-minute walk: the Esplanade lagoon, the night markets, the Reef Fleet Terminal and the marina where boat trips leave, and the bar strip on Lake, Shields and Spence Streets. There is no gay district. The bar strip is mainstream and heavy on backpackers, especially around Shields Street. Cairns North starts just past the Esplanade's northern end and is mostly motels and apartments.
The one LGBTQ+ venue: Cruise Club Cairns
Cruise Club Cairns, at 30 Spence Street in the CBD, describes itself as an adult gay lounge for men in North Queensland. Travel Gay and misterb&b list it as Cairns Cruise Lounge. It's run alongside Laneway Adult Shop at the same address, with a discreet rear entrance. Its own site lists a bar and lounge, free lockers and wifi, private cubicles, a mirror room and slings; Travel Gay adds a maze, a video room, glory holes and showers with free towels. Both the club and the shop list hours of 10:00 to 22:00 daily. We couldn't find a published entry price, so call ahead on (07) 4051 3669. It is a cruise club, not a wet-and-dry sauna, and it closes at 22:00, so it's a daytime and early-evening place rather than a late-night one.
Bars and nights out
Without a gay bar, queer Cairns uses the mainstream venues. A 2023 roundup by Queer in the World named the waterfront Flamingos Tiki Bar, the cocktail bar Three Wolves on Spence Street and the casino's BAR36 as friendly places to drink, and that matches what we'd expect: nobody will blink at a same-sex couple on the Esplanade. None of them is a gay bar, and none runs a regular queer night that we could confirm. We also found no regular drag show or drag bingo in the city in 2025 or 2026.
During Pride the picture changes. The 2025 festival used The Cotton Club on Shields Street for a Pride party, Salthouse for trivia, Tanks Arts Centre for the art exhibition and O'Sheas on the Waterfront at Machans Beach for the 18+ Tropical Pride Party with drag. The Pier Bar at the marina hosted a launch party for the Heatwave festival in October 2025.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
Out Front Bar, which the Star Observer called "Cairns' only LGBT venue", closed for good in 2011 after licensing problems. Sapphire Bar closed in 2009. Head Office CBD, an older cruise club and shop on McLeod Street, is marked closed by Travel Gay; Cruise Club Cairns on Spence Street is the current one.
Some directories, including an older version of this page, called several mainstream venues gay bars. They aren't. THE VOID on Lake Street is a techno and psytrance rave club with a come-as-you-are attitude but no LGBTQ+ programming. Cock & Bull in Cairns North is an English-style tavern and sports pub. Covergirls on Lake Street is a showgirl club, and Xclusive on Spence Street is a hip hop and R&B club. All four are open; none is a gay venue.
Cairns Pride Festival
Cairns Pride runs from 9 to 25 October 2026, according to the official festival site (cairnspridefestival.com.au). It's organised by Cairns Pride Inc. The festival started in 2006, was called Tropical Mardi Gras in 2015 and 2016, and was kept alive in 2019 by the Queensland AIDS Council (now the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health) after the original board voted to wind it up. A rainbow pedestrian crossing was opened in the city during Pride in 2021. Recent editions ran 4 to 13 October 2024 and 11 to 26 October 2025.
The programme varies, but typical events are the Pride Stride march from Fogarty Park, a Queer Day Out barbecue on the Esplanade, a Pride art exhibition at Tanks Arts Centre, trivia, a seniors' morning tea and the Tropical Pride Party. Fair Day with its dog show was held at Fogarty Park in 2024. The 2026 programme on the official site appears to repeat the 2025 dates and doesn't give venues, so check the festival's social pages for each event before you go. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing; October is the pattern.
Cairns Pride is in October. Older guides that put it in August are confusing it with the general Cairns Festival.
Up the coast
Turtle Cove Beach Resort, at Wangetti about 35 to 40 km north of Cairns, has been an adults-only resort for LGBTQIA+ guests and allies since 1993, with its own clothing-optional beach and the SandBar, which Travel Gay and Queensland's tourism site both point gay visitors to. The resort was put up for sale in 2026, so check that it's taking bookings.
Port Douglas, about an hour north, launched the Heatwave Festival, an LGBTQIA+ weekend, from 13 to 15 February 2026.
Buchan Point, at the northern end of Palm Cove about 25 km north of the CBD, is an unofficial clothing-optional beach. The Cairns Sunboys, a gay nudist group, have used it for more than 20 years, and gay travel sites list it. Public nudity is an offence in Queensland and the beach has no official status, so nude bathing there carries a real risk of a fine. Keep it discreet and respect other beachgoers.
Health and community
The Queensland Council for LGBTI Health (QC) has its Cairns office, QC Gimuy, at 290 Draper Street, Parramatta Park, phone (07) 4041 5451. It offers peer support and sexual-health services, and the same office hosts 2Spirits, its program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sistergirls and brotherboys.
Cairns Sexual Health Service is at Cairns North Community Health, 381 Sheridan Street, phone (07) 4226 4769, with free and confidential testing.
QLife (1800 184 527, or online chat) offers anonymous LGBTIQ+ peer support nationally every day from 3pm to midnight.
Practical tips
Time zone: Queensland doesn't use daylight saving, so from October to early April Cairns is an hour behind Sydney and Melbourne.
Getting in: Cairns Airport (CNS) is about 10 minutes from the CBD by taxi or rideshare, with domestic flights from all the capitals and some international routes.
Season: the dry season (roughly May to October) is the most comfortable time. Pride falls at the end of it. November to April brings heat, humidity, storms and stinger season, so swim in the Esplanade lagoon or inside the netted enclosures at the northern beaches.
Hotels: the Esplanade and the streets behind it hold most of the city's hotels, from hostels to the Hilton and Pullman. None in the city is a gay hotel. Our hotel listings are mainstream properties close to the bar strip and the reef boats.
Apps do a lot of the work in a city this size; expect plenty of tourists and backpackers on them.
A few words
"Gimuy" is the Yidinji name for the Cairns area, and you'll see it in the names of local organisations, including QC Gimuy.

No. We couldn't find any independent source naming a gay bar or club open in Cairns in 2026, and Travel Gay says the city has none. The last one, Out Front Bar, closed in 2011. Queer locals and visitors drink at mainstream places such as Flamingos Tiki Bar on the Esplanade and Three Wolves on Spence Street, and nobody minds. During the Cairns Pride Festival in October there are Pride parties at venues around town.
Yes, one. Cruise Club Cairns at 30 Spence Street describes itself as an adult gay lounge for men, with lockers, a bar and lounge, private cubicles, a mirror room and slings; Travel Gay also lists a maze, video room and showers. It's open daily from 10:00 to 22:00 and has a discreet rear entrance next to Laneway Adult Shop. We couldn't find a published entry price, so call (07) 4051 3669.
The Cairns Pride Festival runs from 9 to 25 October 2026, according to the official site, cairnspridefestival.com.au. It has been held every year since 2006, usually across two weeks in October; 2025 ran 11 to 26 October. Typical events are the Pride Stride march from Fogarty Park, a Queer Day Out on the Esplanade, an art exhibition at Tanks Arts Centre and the 18+ Tropical Pride Party. It isn't in August; that's the general Cairns Festival.
Yes, for the most part. Same-sex marriage is legal across Australia, Queensland bans discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity, and the CBD is full of tourists and backpackers. Holding hands on the Esplanade won't draw attention. Take normal late-night care on the Shields Street bar strip, as you would in any party district. For support, QLife (1800 184 527) is free and anonymous every day from 3pm to midnight.

Yes.
