Belgium's been ahead on LGBTQ+ rights for a while: same-sex marriage was legal in 2003, joint adoption in 2006, and strong anti-discrimination laws back it all up. Ghent, a walkable medieval city of 260,000, heavy on students, wears its progressivism lightly. Queer life here isn't shunted off to one strip; it’s just part of the city. Organised LGBTQ+ groups have been active since 1969.

Kammerstraat is gay Ghent’s real center. It’s a short street near Vrijdagmarkt and Bij Sint-Jacobs, right in the old core. Casa Rosa – the Oost-Vlaams Regenbooghuis (East Flanders Rainbow House) – has been at number 22 since 2000. It houses cavaria Oost-Vlaanderen and about twenty queer associations, plus its ground-floor bar, A-Pluss. A few dedicated gay dance-cafes, like Kingstreet and El Diablo, are packed into the same block. If you’re looking for the community’s anchor, it’s Kammerstraat, not some pretty tourist square.

Ghent’s gay bar scene is small but genuine. A-Pluss inside Casa Rosa feels like the community’s social living room. Kingstreet, often called the city's oldest gay bar, and the holebi dance-cafe El Diablo keep Kammerstraat lively late into the night. Nearby, Barrazza is a relaxed, gay-straight-friendly cafe for quieter evenings. Abacho, on Hoogpoort, is a late-night holebi bar for after-hours. Beyond the dedicated spots, the student club Decadance on Overpoortstraat is a straight-leaning techno institution that runs queer nights. Weekends are busiest. Many places only open a few nights a week, so check hours before you go.

The city's dedicated gay bathhouse is Spades4Gents on Koning Albertlaan, a quick walk from Gent-Sint-Pieters station. It has four floors with a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, pool, and cruising areas. The same team runs Spades in Brussels; this one reopened after renovation in late 2025. On the city's western edge in Drongen, Club Adonis is a men-only gay sex-and-cruising club with sauna facilities, a darkroom, and cabins. For outdoor cruising, Citadelpark near the MSK and S.M.A.K. museums is the long-standing and most documented spot, busiest after dark. It’s a public park, so use standard urban caution and respect the law.

Ghent doesn’t do a big commercial Pride parade. That’s Antwerp Pride’s job each August, and the national Belgian Pride march is in Brussels in May. Ghent's own event is the Queer March, a grassroots, volunteer-run queer festival that happens all through March. Organised by the collective vzw Janet, it’s framed as protest and community, not spectacle. In July, Casa Rosa makes Kammerstraat a queer focal point during the citywide Gentse Feesten, with a Rainbow Market, apéros, and performances. Casa Rosa and the youth association Verkeerd Geparkeerd also run smaller, recurring nights.

Ghent has plenty of places to stay, from design B&Bs on the canals to full-service hotels. The compact center means almost anywhere puts you within walking or cycling distance of Kammerstraat. There are no exclusively gay hotels, but Belgium's inclusive norms mean LGBTQ+ travelers are welcome everywhere. Boutique stays around the Patershol, Korenmarkt, and Sint-Pieters areas are all convenient.

Gent-Sint-Pieters station has direct links to Brussels (about 30 minutes), Antwerp, and Bruges, plus international connections. Trams and buses cover the wider city, but the medieval core is best explored on foot or by bike. Ghent is flat, compact, and famously bicycle-friendly, with much of the center car-free.

Ghent is a European capital for vegetarian and vegan food and takes its Belgian beer seriously. The canalside cafes around Graslei and Korenmarkt are perfect for people-watching. Don’t miss the Ghent Altarpiece in Sint-Baafskathedraal, the medieval Gravensteen castle, and the MSK and S.M.A.K. art museums beside Citadelpark. Bruges and Antwerp are each about half an hour away by train, making Ghent a good base for Flanders.

Ghent is a safe, welcoming city, and open LGBTQ+ affection is completely normal in the center and beyond. Belgium’s laws and social attitudes are among the most protective in the world. Use standard caution against pickpocketing in crowded tourist areas, but there are no specific safety concerns tied to LGBTQ+ identity.
