The honest summary: Plzeň (Pilsen in English and German) is the Czech Republic's fourth-largest city, with about 185,000 people. It is the capital of the Plzeň Region in West Bohemia, about 90 km south-west of Prague. It's a good place for beer, architecture and a calm weekend. It isn't a place for a gay night out: at the time of writing Plzeň has no gay bar, club or sauna. The last one, Míša G+L Club, closed in August 2024. What the city does have is a small but determined community, a September Pride week run by volunteers, a regular queer evening, and free HIV testing. For bars, clubs and saunas, Prague is just over an hour away by train.
Legal in one line: Sex between men was decriminalised in Czechoslovakia in 1962 and the age of consent has been equal at 15 since 1990. Registered partnership arrived on 1 July 2006, and since 1 January 2025 partners have almost all the rights of marriage, including stepchild adoption, but not joint adoption or the name "marriage".
Is there a gay scene in Plzeň?
Not in the sense of venues you can walk into on a Saturday night. We checked the Czech gay directory nakluky.cz, Travel Gay, Czech press and the websites of every bar and sauna that older guides (including earlier versions of this page) linked to the scene. None of the current Plzeň bars or saunas presents itself as gay or queer, and none appears in any LGBTQ+ guide. Pink Panther Pub, No Limit Bar, My Friends Bar and the Medvěd music clubs are ordinary mainstream bars. The "saunas" are private rental or couples' wellness rooms. Gallardo is a straight strip club. We've removed all of them from our gay listings.
That doesn't mean Plzeň is unfriendly. It's a university city (home to the University of West Bohemia, ZČU), and the centre is relaxed. Most queer social life happens privately, on the apps, at community evenings and during Pride week, or on a trip to Prague.
Pilsen Pride is a volunteer group founded by students. It has run a Pride march every year since 2 September 2017, except in 2020 and 2021, when COVID cancelled it. Since 2022 the festival has been held in September. In 2026 it ran from 9 to 13 September, with a Drink and Draw night at Galerie Jednota, a book club, the march on Saturday 12 September (15:00 from the Mlýnská strouha park) and concerts at Buena Vista afterwards, followed by a picnic on Mikulášské náměstí. About 300 people marched. In 2019 around 50 far-right counter-protesters tried to block the route on Dřevěná street, and riot police moved them aside. Since 2022 there has been no organised opposition. Police treated the 2026 march as higher-risk after an attack at a Berlin Pride event in July, but they reported no incidents.
The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked in October 2026. The organisers say the festival will stay in September. Watch pilsenpride.eu or @pilsen_pride. Full details are on our Pilsen Pride event page.
Teplé večery (queer evenings)
Outside Pride week, Pilsen Pride and the community space Tábor 17 host "teplé večery" (literally "warm evenings"; teplý is Czech slang for gay) at Táborská 17. They run every odd-week Monday from 18:00 to 22:00, anyone can come, and entry is pay-what-you-like. The Pilsen Pride website has a small tool to check whether a given Monday is an "odd" one. This is the easiest way for a visitor to meet local queer people.
Bars, clubs and saunas
There are none to list right now. When a gay or queer-run venue opens in Plzeň, it will show up on our bars page. Until then, the nearest real scene is in Prague: about 1 hour 15 minutes by fast train since the Ejpovice tunnel opened in 2018, with gay bars, clubs and saunas mostly around Vinohrady. See our Prague guide.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
Míša G+L Club (Černická 914/11): Plzeň's gay and lesbian club, run by the Míša association, open at weekends with travesti (drag) shows. It closed permanently in August 2024. Travel Gay still listed it as "the only gay bar and club in Pilsen" in 2026, but that's out of date.
Queer G&L Music bar (Kollárova 36): opened in March 2012 and closed around 2013. The premises are now a private wellness business with no queer link.
"Gay saunas" in Plzeň: older web guides, including a previous version of ours, listed SAUNA Plzeň, Sauna Jižní, 3 Sauny and Spicy Relax as gay saunas. They aren't. They are private rental saunas and couples' wellness, and SAUNA Plzeň's own site said it was temporarily closed in October 2026.
Where to stay
Plzeň is compact, and you can walk almost everywhere from the old town ring. Hotels on or near náměstí Republiky put you a few minutes from the cathedral and the Great Synagogue, and about 15 minutes on foot from the brewery and the main station. We list mainstream hotels as gay-friendly, not as gay hotels. Central picks include Hotel Central on the square, Boutique Hotel Rango on Pražská, Courtyard by Marriott Pilsen on the park ring and Vienna House Easy by the brewery and station. Book early for Pride week in September and for the Liberation Festival in early May. See all Plzeň hotels.
Pilsner Urquell brewery: the original pilsner has been brewed here since 1842, and the brewery tour includes the cellars.
Great Synagogue (1893): the second-largest synagogue in Europe and the third-largest in the world.
St. Bartholomew's Cathedral: its tower, at about 102 m, is the tallest church tower in the Czech Republic. You can climb its 301 steps for the view over the square.
Plzeň Historical Underground: tunnels and cellars under the old town.
Techmania science centre, and the Patton Memorial, which marks the city's liberation by the US Army in May 1945. That history is why the Liberation Festival (Slavnosti svobody) is held every early May.
Plzeň was European Capital of Culture in 2015, and DEPO2015, the old tram depot turned creative hub, came out of that year.
Practical tips
Getting there: Prague Airport (PRG) is about 90 km away. Fast trains from Praha hlavní nádraží take around 1 h 15 min, and coaches run from Prague (Zličín) too. Karlovy Vary airport only has occasional charter flights, so it isn't a realistic option for most visitors.
Getting around: the centre is walkable, and trams and trolleybuses (PMDP) cover the rest.
Safety: Plzeň is generally safe and calm. Same-sex couples holding hands in the centre are unlikely to have trouble, though you'll get more stares than in Prague, especially away from the old town late at night.
Health: ČSAP runs free, anonymous HIV testing at CheckPoint Plzeň, on the 3rd floor of the Poliklinika Plzeň-Bory at Čechova 44, on Wednesdays from 15:00 to 18:00. Check hiv-testovani.cz for holiday closures.
Apps: with no bars, Grindr and similar apps are how most local gay men meet. Use the usual precautions.
