In Düsseldorf the beer is dark and it keeps coming. In the Altstadt brewhouses a Köbes in a blue apron puts down a small glass of Altbier, copper-brown and bitter, marks your beer mat, and brings the next one before you ask. Out on the Rhine embankment the evening crowd sits on the steps, and the trams run east past the main station towards Flingern. The cruising scene, though, is small. The city's long-running cruise bar has gone, the old Phoenix sauna has become Turbine 11, and for darkrooms and cruise bars many local men take the train to Cologne. What Düsseldorf does have is one active men's sauna, a handful of gay bars and some parks with a cruising reputation, which come with real legal and safety caveats.

Legal in one line: Germany has had same-sex marriage since 2017 and strong anti-discrimination law, and gay saunas are legal, licensed businesses. Sex in public is different: under §183a StGB (Erregung öffentlichen Ärgernisses, "causing a public nuisance"), sexual acts in public that deliberately or knowingly cause offence can bring a fine or up to a year in prison.

Indoors: Turbine 11, the city's men's sauna

Turbine 11

Turbine 11 (Platanenstraße 11a, 40233 Düsseldorf-Flingern) is the sauna that took over the former Phoenix premises after a renovation and a change of management. misterb&b describes it as a men's sauna of about 500 m² over two floors. Its own website calls it "Das Saunaerlebnis für Männer" and lists a sauna and steam bath with hourly Aufgüsse (scented infusions), a bar, a lounge, warm cabins, a chill-out zone and massage.

Hours and prices (as listed on its site in October 2026): open 365 days a year from 11:45, with late opening to 01:00 and a continuous run through the weekend; check the site for the exact pattern. Social media posts give standard entry as €25. Cheaper deals include €15 all day on Mondays, €15 for under-30s, €15 for late arrivals from 22:00 Sunday to Thursday, and a Wednesday partner rate (€25 plus €15).

The weekly rhythm: Saturday is the Turbine 11 party (19:00–01:00), with foam in the steam bath on the first and third Saturdays; Sunday is a wellness day with infusions in the afternoon and a coffee-and-cake Kaffeeklatsch. Note that Thursday is "BI + Friends", a mixed day described as "all gender welcome", so it is not a men-only day. The sauna also opens its cruising and chill-out zone after the SCHAMLOS queer parties; its site advertises free entry with a SCHAMLOS ticket (and a €20 minimum drink spend) after the Monster's Halloween Ball at the zakk on Friday 30 October 2026.

Reviews from the last Phoenix years complained about broken facilities and a quiet atmosphere; the new owners have refurbished, but go with flexible expectations and check the site before a long trip.

Bars to start the night

Düsseldorf has no dedicated cruise bar at the moment, so nights start in the gay bars. Near the main station, Queenz (Charlottenstraße 62) is a bar and club playing pop, charts and disco, busiest on Saturdays; Travel Gay lists it as open Thursday to Saturday from 22:00. K1 Club is a small, late gay club in the same station area. In the Altstadt, Nähkörbchen (Hafenstraße 11) is a small, long-standing gay pub near the old harbour with parties and live music, and a favourite of gay carnival fans. These are bars, not darkroom venues; check their social media for current hours.

Closed: Musk. The dimly lit bar and club at Charlottenstraße 47, near the main station, was described by Travel Gay as a local gay institution of 30 years, with a darkroom and DJs at weekends. Travel Gay now lists it as reported closed, and we found no sign of it operating in 2025–2026.

Renamed: Phoenix Sauna. The gay sauna at Platanenstraße 11a is listed as closed by Travel Gay; the premises reopened as Turbine 11 (above). Don't confuse it with Phoenix in Cologne, which is a separate sauna and still open.

Also gone: Condor Wellness Sauna (Luisenstraße 129).

Outdoor cruising: the parks, the law and staying safe

Four outdoor places in Düsseldorf have a cruising reputation. They are ordinary public spaces used by families, joggers and dog walkers, and nothing in them is organised or supervised. We name the areas only, not meeting points.

    • Hofgarten: the big central park between the Altstadt and the northern end of the Königsallee, and the scene of the 2021 robberies described below.
    • Südpark: a large park in the south of the city.
    • Hanielpark: a smaller park reported in Flingern, east of the centre.
    • Parkplatz Kalkumer Schlossallee: a roadside car park in Kalkum, in the far north of the city.

Law: meeting other men in a park is legal. Sexual acts in public can be prosecuted under §183a StGB if they deliberately or knowingly cause offence, with a fine or up to a year in prison, and police can also act on complaints from passers-by.

Safety: dark parks are where robbers look for easy targets. In March 2021, for example, Düsseldorf police reported a group threatening two women with a knife in the Hofgarten at night and, the next evening, attacking two men near Hofgartenstraße. Go with a friend or tell someone where you are, carry only your phone, a little cash and your ID, leave the watch and the bag at home, and stay near lit paths. Be wary of anyone who pushes to move somewhere more isolated. If something happens, call 110 (police) or 112 (ambulance).

    Cologne: the nearby alternative

For many men in Düsseldorf, "going cruising" means a trip up the Rhine to Cologne. Trains between Düsseldorf Hbf and Köln Hbf run all day: the fastest ICE and regional express (RE/RRX) services take roughly 20–30 minutes, and the S-Bahn line S 6 also covers the route. Until 4 December 2026, engineering work between Düsseldorf Hbf and Köln-Mülheim may divert or cancel some RE 1, RE 5, S 6 and S 11 trains, so check the DB app before you set off and again for the last train home, or plan to stay over.

    The Mathiasstraße cruise bars

Cologne's two cruise bars sit on one short street, Mathiasstraße in Altstadt-Süd, near the U-Bahn stop Heumarkt and a few minutes from the Rhine.

    • Deck 5 (Mathiasstraße 5): a gay cruise bar with a darkroom at the back and cabins. Travel Gay lists it as open from 20:00 to 03:00, and to 05:00 on Friday and Saturday nights.
    • Pullermanns (Mathiasstraße 22): a men-only cruise and fetish bar with a darkroom, formerly "Hands" and "Boners". Travel Gay lists a naked party every Monday from 18:00 and a fetish event on Sundays; on other nights it opens at 21:00, until 03:00 in the week and 05:00 on Friday and Saturday.

    The Cologne saunas

    • Badehaus Babylon (Friesenstraße 23–25, U Friesenplatz): the large one, with an outdoor pool in the courtyard, steam rooms, a labyrinth and a darkroom.
    • Phoenix (Richard-Wagner-Straße 12, U Rudolfplatz): described by reviewers as busier and younger. Not to be confused with Düsseldorf's former Phoenix, now Turbine 11.
    • Sauna Vulcanus (Marienplatz 3, old town): small and traditional, popular with older men; call ahead.

The big Station 2B cruise club on Pipinstraße remains closed. For hours, prices and the Schaafenstraße bars, see our Cologne cruising guide.

Local colour: Altbier and the Altstadt

The Altstadt likes to call itself "the longest bar in the world", and its brewhouses still brew Altbier on the premises. It comes in small glasses, and the Köbes keeps replacing empties, pencilling a line on your beer mat for each one, until you put the mat on top of your glass; at the end the lines are your bill. Uerige, Füchschen, Schumacher and Zum Schlüssel are the classic names. Order a Halve Hahn (a rye roll with aged Gouda and mustard, with no chicken at all) or a plate of Rheinischer Sauerbraten. Finish with a shot of Killepitsch, the local herbal liqueur, before the walk down to the Rhine embankment.

    Practical tips

    • Getting around: the Rheinbahn runs the U-Bahn, trams and buses; buy tickets in the app or at machines. Night buses run at weekends; check the times before a late sauna visit. Flingern is a short tram ride east of the main station.
    • Cash and cards: Germany still likes cash. Carry some for the sauna bar and the brewhouses, even where cards are accepted.
    • Apps: Grindr and Romeo are both widely used in Germany, and for many men they have replaced the cruise bar.
    • Lockers: in the sauna, lock away your phone and wallet before going into the darkened areas.
    • Health: Aidshilfe Düsseldorf offers HIV and STI testing and advice. If you need PEP after a risk, go to a hospital emergency department as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours. Never mix GHB with alcohol.
    • Community: the Queeres Zentrum Düsseldorf is a good first stop for groups and events.

    Pride and big weekends

CSD Düsseldorf 2026 ran from Thursday 4 to Sunday 7 June. The demonstration was on Saturday 6 June, gathering from 11:30 and setting off at 13:30 from Graf-Adolf-Platz at the southern end of the Königsallee, through the city centre and along the Rhine. Police expected around 7,500 marchers. The street festival and main stage were on Johannes-Rau-Platz and along the Rhine promenade, and the motto was "Wir bleiben bunt und laut!" ("We stay colourful and loud!"). Dates for 2027 had not been announced at the time of writing; expect early summer again. The other big season is carnival, from 11 November to Ash Wednesday, when the Altstadt is packed and the gay bars throw their own parties. In 2026 Cologne's CSD parade followed a month later, on 5 July.

    A few words of German

    • Spind – locker. Handtuch – towel. Eintritt – entry fee.
    • Kabine – cabin. Darkroom – same as in English.
    • Aufguss – sauna infusion (water and scent poured on the stones).
    • Nackt – naked. Schaum – foam.
    • Ein Alt, bitte – an Altbier, please. Köbes – the brewhouse waiter.
    • Bierdeckel – beer mat, and your running bill.
    • Prost! – cheers. Helau! – Düsseldorf's carnival cheer (never say Cologne's Alaaf here).

Frequently asked questions

Where is gay cruising in Düsseldorf?

Indoors, at Turbine 11, the men's sauna on Platanenstraße in Flingern; the city has no dedicated cruise bar at the moment. A few parks have an outdoor reputation, but public sex there carries legal and robbery risks, so many men head to Cologne instead.

Is the Phoenix sauna in Düsseldorf still open?

Not under that name. The former Phoenix premises at Platanenstraße 11a reopened under new management as Turbine 11, which lists itself as open every day from 11:45. The Phoenix sauna in Cologne is a separate business.

Is outdoor cruising legal in Düsseldorf?

Meeting men in a park is legal, but sex in public can be prosecuted under §183a StGB if it deliberately or knowingly causes offence. Robberies have also been reported in the Hofgarten after dark, so carry little and stay alert.

When was CSD Düsseldorf 2026?

It ran from 4 to 7 June 2026, with the demonstration on Saturday 6 June from Graf-Adolf-Platz and the street festival on Johannes-Rau-Platz by the Rhine. Dates for 2027 had not been announced at the time of writing.

Is Cologne better than Düsseldorf for cruising?

For choice, yes: Cologne has two cruise bars on Mathiasstraße, Deck 5 and Pullermanns, and three gay saunas, against one sauna in Düsseldorf. The fastest trains take roughly 20–30 minutes, so it works as an evening trip if you check the last train back.
