By day, Genoa lives in the caruggi: alleys so narrow you can touch both walls, washing strung overhead, focaccia ovens and the echo of footsteps on stone. By night, the city's private life moves west, to where the Lanterna, Genoa's old lighthouse, sweeps its beam over the cranes and container stacks of the cargo port. Below it, Sampierdarena carries on with its evening: buses grinding up the main roads, kebab shops still lit, the smell of salt and diesel coming off the harbour. Genoa keeps its private life private, and its scene is small: one men-only cruise bar whose 2026 status is uncertain, one afternoon sauna in the old town, and a Saturday-night disco in the same district as the cruise bar. You need a membership card for the places where things happen. Here's how it works.
Legal in one line: Italy has had same-sex civil unions since 2016, though not full marriage, and private gay clubs with darkrooms are legal when run as members' associations. Sex in public is another matter: atti osceni (obscene acts) in a public place carry an administrative fine of €5,000 to €30,000, and they remain a crime, punishable by four months to four and a half years in prison, if they happen in or near places where minors are usually present.
The card you'll need: Italian cruise bars and saunas are run as private clubs (circoli privati), so you join before you go in. You'll be asked for a national membership card (tessera), usually sold at the door when you show photo ID. Travel Gay lists an ANDDOS card for Lux Club; we found no current ANDDOS listing with more detail. The Aqua Club sauna is on the list of ARCO member clubs. ARCO's standard AllClubs card is valid for a year from issue at all its clubs in Italy. If you are not an Italian citizen, ask for the ARCO Travel card instead: it carries a reduced fee and is valid for 90 days from issue. Fees are set by each club and not every club issues every card, so ask at the door. Keep the card if you're heading on to Milan or Turin, where ARCO also has member clubs.
Lux Club: Genoa's cruise bar
Check before you go: Lux Club may have closed. The international directory misterb&b marks it as closed, Travel Gay's listing was last updated in May 2025, and we found no dated 2026 events for it. Don't head out to a dark port-district street at midnight on the strength of old opening hours: check the club's Facebook page (luxclubgenova) for this week's nights, or ask at the Aqua Club or Arcigay Genova, before you take a taxi west.
Lux Club · Via Sampierdarena 112r, Sampierdarena
Lux Club, formerly Lussurian, is Genoa's men-only cruise bar. Travel Gay describes a large club with a bar, a darkroom, a maze, relaxing cabins and new video rooms and sound system; an ANDDOS card is required. Its listing (last updated in May 2025) gives opening nights of Wednesday from 22:00 to 04:00 and Friday to Sunday from 22:00 until 03:00 or 04:00, and says Sunday is often a naked party. If it is still running, expect what visitors' reviews on Travel Gay (old, but kind) describe: a relaxed, friendly place with good music and men of all ages, and not always crowded, even on a Saturday.
Getting there: Sampierdarena is the port district just west of the centre, beyond the Lanterna. By day, regional trains run from Genova Principe or Brignole to Genova Sampierdarena station. Late at night, take a taxi both ways and book it rather than hunting for one in the street: Radio Taxi Genova is on 010 5966, and the itTaxi app also covers Genoa. Don't rely on FreeNow, which does not list Genoa among its Italian cities. This isn't an area for long walks after midnight.

The sauna, briefly
Aqua Club (Salita Salvatore Viale 15r, just off Piazza De Ferrari) is the city's gay sauna, which ARCO's club directory calls the historic first gay club in Genoa. It's an afternoon venue, opening from 15:00, with steam, a bar and a relaxation area alongside the darker corners. Opening days differ between listings: ARCO's own page lists Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, 15:00 to 20:00, while other directories show it open every day except Tuesday. Check before you go, and see our Genoa saunas guide for the full picture.
Before and after: the bars
Genoa's main gay night, Virgo Discoclub (Via Alfredo Carzino 13r), is in Sampierdarena too, not far from Lux Club, and runs on Saturday nights, mostly in the winter season. In the old town, the queer-friendly cocktail bar Loska (Via di Sant'Agnese 25r) is a relaxed place to start the evening. Our Genoa bars guide has the details.
Gone or changed: Lussurian, the name older guides use for the cruise bar on Via Sampierdarena, is now Lux Club at the same address. We found no adult cinema with a cruising area operating in Genoa today.

Outdoors: why we don't send you there
Older guides and forums name outdoor spots in Genoa, around the old walls and elsewhere. We don't give directions. Under Italian law, sex in a public place brings a fine of €5,000 to €30,000, and a criminal charge if minors could be around. The spots that get mentioned are dark and isolated after nightfall, which makes them easy places to be robbed or harassed, and local LGBTQ+ guides warn against them. In a city this size, the cruise bar and the sauna are where you want to be.
Local colour
Do it the Genoese way. Start with an aperitivo, a spritz or a Negroni, in Piazza delle Erbe in the old town, and line your stomach with a slab of fugassa (focaccia in dialect), glistening with olive oil and salt, or a slice of farinata, the chickpea pancake baked in a wood oven. If the taxi driver calls something belin!, that's the all-purpose Genoese exclamation; and if he complains about the traffic all the way to Sampierdarena, that's mugugno, the muttered Genoese grumble. In old sailors' slang it meant complaining about an order while carrying it out anyway.
Practical tips
- Bring ID and cash. You'll need photo ID to buy the membership card. Carry some cash for entry, the card and drinks, as card payments aren't guaranteed at a club door.
- Lockers: leave your wallet and phone in the locker (armadietto) before heading into the darkroom.
- No photos, ever, inside the clubs.
- Getting home: trains to Sampierdarena don't run all night and the metro closes early (at 21:00 on weekdays under the summer 2026 timetable), so book a taxi on 010 5966 after a late session. The narrow caruggi of the old town, particularly around Via Prè and the lower port lanes, can be rough after midnight; stick to busy streets.
- Apps: Grindr and Romeo are both used in Genoa; the grid is small but busier in summer.
- Health: if a condom breaks, PEP needs to start within 72 hours; go to a hospital emergency department (pronto soccorso). Arcigay Genova (Via del Lagaccio 92R, +39 351 227 5029) has information on where to get an HIV test in the city.
- Chems: never mix GHB/GBL with alcohol, and call 112 in an emergency.
- tessera – membership card. circolo privato – private club.
- ingresso – entry. solo uomini – men only.
- armadietto – locker. spogliatoio – changing room.
- labirinto – maze. cabina – cabin. saletta video – video room.
- serata naked – naked night (Italians use the English word).
- preservativo – condom.
- No, grazie – no, thanks; always enough.
Pride
Liguria Pride took place in Genoa on Saturday 13 June 2026, with the parade starting near Principe station and ending in Piazza De Ferrari, a few steps from the Aqua Club, followed by the Pride Village at the Giardini Luzzati. Arcigay Genova is one of the organisers. The 2027 date hadn't been announced at the time of writing. Further afield, Turin has been chosen to host EuroPride in June 2027, a train ride from Genoa.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I go cruising in Genoa?
Indoors only. The Aqua Club sauna near Piazza De Ferrari is the reliable option, open on some afternoons. Lux Club, the men-only cruise bar in Sampierdarena, may have closed, so confirm it is running before you go.
Do I need a membership card for Lux Club in Genoa?
Yes. Travel Gay lists an ANDDOS card as required at Lux Club, while the Aqua Club sauna needs an ARCO card; non-Italian visitors can ask for ARCO's 90-day Travel card. Cards are normally sold at the door, so bring photo ID.
Is Lux Club in Genoa still open?
Possibly not. misterb&b lists it as closed and we found no 2026 events, while Travel Gay's listing dates from May 2025. Check its Facebook page or ask at the sauna before taking a late taxi to Sampierdarena.
Is outdoor cruising legal in Italy?
No. Public sex (atti osceni) is punished with a fine of 5,000 to 30,000 euros, and with a possible prison sentence where minors may be present. Stick to the private clubs.
When is Liguria Pride in Genoa?
Usually in June. Liguria Pride 2026 was held in Genoa on Saturday 13 June, ending in Piazza De Ferrari with a Pride Village at the Giardini Luzzati. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.
