The honest summary: Stavanger is a very safe, relaxed city for LGBTQ+ travellers, but in autumn 2026 it has no dedicated gay bar, no gay sauna and no documented cruising spot. Queer life here runs through one big annual festival, Skeivå – Rogaland Pride, a handful of community meet-ups, and mainstream bars where nobody will look twice at two men or two women holding hands. Come for the fjords, the old town and the food, and plan your nights around Pride or a weekend in Oslo or Bergen if a scene is what you are after.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage and joint adoption have been legal in Norway since 1 January 2009, legal gender change by self-declaration since 2016, conversion therapy has been banned since 2023, and anti-discrimination law covers sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
Where the queer scene actually is
There is no gay district. Stavanger's centre is small enough to walk across in 20 minutes, and nightlife sits in three tight clusters: the harbourfront bars along Skagenkaien and Strandkaien on either side of Vågen, the Skagen/Prostebakken streets just behind them, and Øvre Holmegate, the street of painted wooden houses everyone calls Fargegaten ("the colourful street"). Fargegaten is where Stavanger's last queer bar was, and it is still the friendliest, most mixed strip in town, with small bars such as Bøker og Børst and Cirkus. The Pride parade passes through it every year.
Bars and clubs: what exists in 2026
For several years the answer to "where is the gay bar in Stavanger" was FRI Bar at Øvre Holmegate 27, a tiny queer cocktail bar with karaoke and DJs that Visit Norway listed as the city's LGBTIQ+ meeting place. As of October 2026 that space has a new name and concept, C'est la Vie Bar ("cocktail lounge, karaoke og gode kvelder", per its own website), which does not describe itself as queer. We could not confirm any queer programming there, so we no longer list it as a gay bar.
Visit Norway also notes that the mainstream Proud Mary Pub (Skagenkaien 6) hosts drag shows from time to time. It is a regular pub, not a gay bar, so check its social media for dates. Outside Pride week we found no regular queer club night in Stavanger. The biggest queer party of the year is Skeivå Nattå, Pride's closing night, usually held at Tou Scene.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
FRI Bar, Øvre Holmegate 27: the queer bar in Fargegaten. The premises reopened as C'est la Vie Bar in 2026. Old guides and some apps still show FRI Bar.
HoT Open Mind, Skagen 25: listed by misterb&b as "Stavanger's gay club" (Fri and Sat, 23:00–03:30). The address is now LouLou, a mainstream techno/underground club. We found no sign that HoT Open Mind still runs.
Saunas, cruising and beaches
Stavanger has no gay sauna. The floating and harbour saunas you will see advertised (Damp, Book Sauna, Rast and others) are ordinary bookable public saunas for everyone. They are lovely after a cold swim, but they are not gay venues. During Pride, Skeivå has run queer sauna sessions as part of the programme. We found no cruising area or gay/naturist beach documented by two independent sources, so we do not list one. Use the apps (Grindr is widely used in Norway) rather than looking for a spot.
Pride: Skeivå – Rogaland Pride
Skeivå – Rogaland Pride (skeiva.no), run with FRI Rogaland, is the region's Pride festival. It runs for about a week from late August into early September, with a Pride House, cafés, talks, a Saturday parade and the Skeivå Nattå party. In 2025 the parade went from Torget along Skagenkaien, through Fargegaten and Pedersgata to a Pride Park at Tou Scene on Saturday 6 September. The 2026 festival (29 August – 6 September) was largely cancelled: after the death of King Harald V on 28 August, Skeivå called off the parade, Pride Park, Skeivå Nattå and all political and festive events. Only social events went ahead, including a service in Stavanger Cathedral, sauna and trans-swim sessions and Skeivå cafés. Dates for 2027 had not been announced at the time of writing. Expect late August to early September again, and check skeiva.no.
Nearby, Haugaland Pride in Haugesund, about two hours north, takes place in June (12–13 June in 2026).
Community and health
FRI Rogaland / Skeivå – Rogaland Pride: the regional branch of FRI (Norway's national LGBTQ+ association) and the Pride organisers. The listed address is Harald Hårfagres gate 9. It works as a contact point, not a drop-in centre, so email rogaland@foreningenfri.no or follow Skeivå for meet-ups.
Helseutvalget Sjekkpunkt: free, anonymous HIV/STI testing for men who have sex with men. Helseutvalget lists pop-up testing sessions in Stavanger at Hotel Victoria. Check helseutvalget.no for dates.
Students: the University of Stavanger runs a Pride café at its library.
Getting in: Stavanger Airport Sola (SVG) is about 14 km from the centre, and the Flybussen airport bus takes roughly 20–30 minutes. The direct train from Oslo takes about 8 hours, and there is a night train.
Money: Norway is close to cashless, so carry a card. A beer in a city-centre bar is expensive by European standards.
Going out: Norwegians start late (bars fill after 22:00) and are reserved with strangers until the second drink. The city is safe, and public displays of affection between same-sex couples draw no attention in the centre.
Day trips: Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) is about 8 km return and around four hours of hiking above the Lysefjord. Lysefjord boat trips leave from the harbour.
In town: Gamle Stavanger's white wooden houses, Stavanger Cathedral (Norway's oldest cathedral, which marked 900 years in 2025), the Norwegian Petroleum Museum, and Sverd i fjell, the three giant swords at Hafrsfjord. Gladmat, the food festival, fills the harbour in late June.
A few words in Norwegian
skeiv: queer (the word the community uses for itself)
