The honest summary: Bern has exactly one gay bar, Comeback Bar, and one long-running queer party, Tolerdance. Everything else is event-led. If you want several gay bars in one night, Zürich is an hour away by train. If you want a friendly local evening, Bern does that well.

Comeback Bar: the one gay bar

Comeback Bar (Rathausgasse 42, Old Town) is a vaulted cellar bar that marked 25 years in 2025. The local magazine Plattform J calls it Bern's only gay bar. Its website lists Tuesday to Thursday 18:00–02:00 and Friday to Saturday 18:00–03:30, closed Sunday and Monday. Expect a mostly male, mixed-age crowd of regulars, conversation rather than dancing, and a DJ on Saturdays according to recent reviews.

Gay-friendly: JAIL Bar

JAIL Bar (Gerechtigkeitsgasse 53) is a mainstream bar in the lower Old Town that Plattform J's 2024 roundup listed as gay-friendly. Google lists Tuesday to Saturday from 17:00. It's a first drink before Comeback, not a gay bar.

Tolerdance at ISC Club

Bern's queer club night is Tolerdance at ISC Club (Neubrückstrasse 10, behind the Reitschule). It has run on the fourth Saturday of the month since 1992, alternating an electronic night with Golden Tolerdance, a drag-and-disco night. Check tolerdance.com for the next date.

The Reitschule

The Reitschule (Neubrückstrasse 8) is Bern's self-managed cultural centre. The Queersicht film festival grew out of it, and its Dachstock club hosts the festival party. Its bar, Rössli, is an alternative bar with a mixed crowd on ordinary nights. We found no current regular drag night there.

Finding the rest

Most queer nights in Bern are one-off or monthly events: QUM dance afternoons, drag shows, Velvet Heat parties, Frauenbeiz evenings for women, the Rainbowdancer TanzBAR at the Queerfeministischer Raum, and the hab queer bern Stammtisch. The bern.lgbt calendar collects them, and our Bern events page pulls from it.

Closed or changed

    • Exit Bar and PINK: still on old lists, no trace of either operating.
    • Petit Four and Samurai: former gay venues, long closed.
    • Dead End and Café Kairo: tagged "gay-friendly" on some sites, but we found no independent source tying them to the community.

    Practical tips

    • Small bars are closed Sunday and Monday. Plan for Tuesday to Saturday.
    • Cards are widely accepted; carry some francs for small bars.
    • For the saunas, see Aqualis and Sundeck on our Bern saunas page.
