Gay Bars & Clubs in Cancún: The Honest 2026 Guide
Last verified: October 2026 · Sources: the venues' own Google listings, Travel Gay, GayCities, The Gay Passport (2025), Xtra and local press.
The honest summary: Cancún has two gay bars, and both are downtown on Avenida Tulum, a few minutes' walk apart. Not in the Hotel Zone. Most "gay Cancún" lists still pad the scene out with Coco Bongo, La Vaquita and backpacker bars. Those are mainstream clubs where a gay couple will be fine, but they aren't gay venues and we don't list them as such.
Legal in one line: sex between men is legal in Mexico, Quintana Roo has recognised same-sex marriage since 2012 and every state has since 2022, and the state's gender-identity law dates from November 2020.
Where the scene is
Downtown Cancún (El Centro) is a grid of numbered supermanzanas (SM). The gay bars sit on or just off Avenida Tulum around SM 22, close to the Parque de las Palapas, where the Pride march ends every year. The Hotel Zone, the 22-kilometre strip along Boulevard Kukulcán, is 20 to 30 minutes away by taxi. Its big clubs around Punta Cancún are aimed at spring-breakers and have no gay night we could confirm.
The two bars
11:11 Club · Av. Tulum, SM 22, Mz 5, Lote 33 (corner of Claveles)
Known locally as Once, 11:11 is the city's gay dance club and the place most visitors end up. Its Google listing gives Wednesday to Sunday, 22:00–05:00, and describes dinner, cocktails, performers and DJs. Drag shows usually start around midnight, with go-go dancers after. The crowd is young and mostly local, and the music is pop and Latin. Reviewers like the door staff but complain about one crowded bar and very loud music. There's a cover on show nights. Line-ups are posted on Instagram (@11club), or call +52 998 135 2243.
Laser Hot Bar (Beer & Queer) · Av. Tulum, Plaza Galerías
A small bar built around drag shows, two minutes from 11:11. Gay guides describe it as the successor to Picante, which older guides called Cancún's oldest gay bar. Google lists it Wednesday to Sunday, 20:00–02:30, closed Monday and Tuesday; Travel Gay gave the same days in September 2025. Reviews praise the shows and the food. A few tourists report steep drink prices, so check the menu first. Show seats can be booked by phone.
Most people do both: Laser for the early show, then 11:11 after midnight.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
- The BackDoor (Plaza Las Palmas, Av. Xcaret): a gay club with a Sunday drag brunch in 2024–25. Its Google listing now says temporarily closed, and its website domain has lapsed. Don't plan around it unless its Instagram shows recent nights.
- Picante Bar: now Laser Hot Bar (see above).
- Karamba: listed as closed by misterb&b.
- Bar Noa (Hotel Zone): marked permanently closed by GayCities.
- Taboo and Sexy's Club: appear only in guides from 2013.
- Hunter Bar (Alcatraces 45): a busy, well-rated backpacker bar. Some lists call it gay, but nothing on its own pages or in the guides we checked supports that.
- Timing: nothing is busy before 23:00. Friday and Saturday after midnight are the big nights; Monday and Tuesday both bars are closed.
- Getting there: R-1 and R-2 buses run between the Hotel Zone and Avenida Tulum (about 12 pesos), but after dark take a taxi or an app ride, agree the taxi fare first, and go door to door.
- Money: bring pesos for the cover and drinks; check prices before you order.
- Apps: Grindr is busy, including with visitors. Robberies set up through dating apps happen in Mexico: meet in a bar first.
- ID: the drinking age is 18. Carry a copy of your passport, not the original.
- De ambiente – gay or gay-friendly ("un bar de ambiente").
- Antro – club, place to go out.
- ¿Cuánto es el cover? – how much is entry?
- Show de drag / vestidas – drag show.
Mainstream clubs you'll hear about
Coco Bongo, Mandala and La Vaquita at Punta Cancún are big mainstream show clubs. Travel Gay notes Coco Bongo "attracts a gay crowd", and same-sex couples generally report no trouble, but there's no gay night or gay promoter. Go for the show, not the scene.
Practical tips
Pride and events
The 2026 Cancún Pride march was on Saturday 16 May, from the Malecón Tajamar along Avenida Bonampak and Avenida Tulum to the Parque de las Palapas, with drag contests and concerts over the weekend. A second group, Cancún Pride Internacional, marched separately on Saturday 6 June 2026. Both bars run Pride-weekend parties. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing. See Cancún Pride.
