Manaus: An Amazonian LGBTQ+ Gateway

Manaus, the capital of Amazonas and the largest city in the Brazilian Amazon, is an unusual gay destination: a metropolis of more than two million people at the meeting of the Rio Negro and the Amazon River, where a compact but genuine LGBTQ+ scene sits alongside jungle lodges and river tours. It is far smaller in scale than São Paulo or Rio, but the city has a real nightlife circuit, an annual Pride parade that fills the streets of downtown, and a network of community organizations working across the state.

The heart of the scene is Centro, the historic downtown near the port. The everyday hub is around Praça da Saudade (Praça 5 de Setembro) and Rua Simão Bolívar, where open-air bars and small venues cluster together and where the Pride parade concentrates each year. Most of the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife is walkable within Centro, with a couple of larger clubs elsewhere in the city.

Nightlife. Manaus keeps a handful of dedicated gay venues rather than the mega-clubs of the south. TS Night Club, in Centro near the Boulevard, is the most traditional gay nightclub in the city and has been running for well over a decade, with drag shows, go-go dancers and a weekend dance floor. Casa da Thata, on Rua Simão Bolívar in the Praça da Saudade cluster, is an LGBTQ+ "espaço cultural" with drag performances and DJs on Thursday through Sunday nights, and its neighbouring outdoor kiosk, Banca da Thata, is a relaxed caipirinha street bar in the same square. Largo 443, on Rua 10 de Julho, is an established downtown LGBTQ+ bar that has been part of the scene for years. Glam Pink Lounge, on Rua Lobo D'Almada, is a newer gay lounge that opened in 2025. Away from the centre, Augusta Haus on Avenida Pedro Teixeira (Dom Pedro) is a gay nightclub known for drag and electronic nights. For adult-oriented nightlife, Pub Cine Aventura on Avenida Ramos Ferreira is a men's cruise venue with cabins and a dark room.

Saunas

Saunas. Sauna culture is far more limited here than in southern Brazil. The city's one established gay men's bathhouse is Clube H2O in Centro (Rua José Paranaguá), a men-only club with a pool, dry and steam saunas, a dark room and cabins, typically open from the late afternoon into the evening. There is no wider sauna circuit in Manaus, so H2O is effectively the sole option.

Cruising

Cruising. Same-sex activity is legal in Brazil, and Manaus has a long-standing, informally tolerated outdoor cruising area in the Distrito Industrial, in the wooded strip along Avenida Mandii near the Bola da Suframa roundabout. It is busiest in the late afternoon. As with any isolated outdoor spot, discretion and personal-safety awareness are essential.

Pride & Events

Pride and community. The Parada do Orgulho LGBT+ de Manaus is the city's headline event and one of the largest diversity celebrations in northern Brazil, drawing around 20,000 people. First held around 2001, it takes place in late September, with a concentration at Praça da Saudade in Centro and a march along Avenida Constantino Nery. It is organized by the Instituto da Diversidade do Amazonas, the leading local advocacy group, alongside partners across the state. Other active organizations include Associação Manifesta LGBT+, focused on rights advocacy, and Associação Orquídeas LGBTQIAP+ AM, which provides legal and psychosocial support to victims of discrimination. December in Manaus brings Dezembro Vermelho HIV/AIDS awareness activities rather than Pride, so travellers should plan around the September parade.

Neighborhoods

Neighborhoods and where to stay. Centro is the most convenient base for nightlife, with everything from budget hostels to boutique hotels within walking distance of Praça da Saudade; Rua 10 de Julho alone has several good options. Adrianópolis and Nossa Senhora das Graças (Vieiralves) are quieter, more upscale districts a short ride away, and Ponta Negra, on the Rio Negro, is the riverside resort zone with the city's beach, larger hotels and restaurants. Booking ahead is wise during the September Pride weekend and school-holiday periods.

Getting Around

Getting around and staying safe. Eduardo Gomes International Airport is about 14 km from the centre; most visitors use ride-hailing apps or hotel transfers. Uber and 99 operate widely and are the easiest way to move around at night. Manaus requires the same street-smart precautions as any large Brazilian city: keep valuables out of sight, use apps rather than hailing cabs, and stay in well-lit, busy areas after dark. The local LGBTQ+ community is visible and Pride is well established, but discretion is sensible in unfamiliar neighbourhoods.

Beyond the city. Manaus is the gateway to the Amazon. The Meeting of the Waters, where the dark Rio Negro runs beside the sandy Amazon without mixing, is a short boat trip away, and rainforest excursions range from day trips to multi-day jungle lodges. Amazonian cuisine — tambaqui and tucunaré fish, tacacá, and fresh açaí — is a highlight in its own right. The combination of a real, if intimate, gay scene with world-class nature is what makes Manaus a distinctive stop for LGBTQ+ travellers looking beyond Brazil's coastal capitals.

常見問題

Brazil has legal protections for LGBTQ+ people and same-sex marriage, and Manaus has a visible community and a well-established Pride. As in any large Brazilian city, use normal precautions: keep valuables out of sight, use ride-hailing apps rather than hailing cabs on the street, and stay in busy, well-lit areas at night. Discretion is sensible in unfamiliar neighbourhoods, but public displays of affection are common at LGBTQ+ venues and events.

Centro is the best base: it holds most of the gay venues, the sauna, and the Pride route, all walkable around Praca da Saudade, with hotels and hostels nearby on Rua 10 de Julho. Adrianopolis and Nossa Senhora das Gracas (Vieiralves) are quieter upscale areas a short ride away, and Ponta Negra is the riverside resort zone with the city beach and larger hotels.

Pride in Manaus is celebrated in late September, not mid-year. The Parada do Orgulho LGBT+ de Manaus draws around 20,000 people to downtown, with a concentration at Praca da Saudade in Centro and a march along Avenida Constantino Nery. It is organized by the Instituto da Diversidade do Amazonas and is one of the largest LGBTQ+ events in northern Brazil. Note that December's Dezembro Vermelho activities are HIV/AIDS awareness events, not the Pride parade.

Nightlife is intimate and centred on Centro. TS Night Club is the long-running flagship, with drag and dancing; Casa da Thata is an LGBTQ+ cultural space with drag shows and DJs; Largo 443 and Glam Pink Lounge round out the downtown bars; and Augusta Haus, further out in Dom Pedro, is known for drag and electronic nights. Venues are busiest Friday through Sunday. There is also a men's cruise venue, Pub Cine Aventura, for adult-oriented nightlife.

Most of Manaus's LGBTQ+ nightlife is in Centro, around Praca da Saudade and Rua Simao Bolivar. The main venues are TS Night Club (the most traditional gay club), Casa da Thata and its outdoor kiosk Banca da Thata, Largo 443, and the newer Glam Pink Lounge, plus Augusta Haus on Avenida Pedro Teixeira. Clube H2O in Centro is the city's gay men's sauna. You can browse all of these on our Manaus bars and saunas pages.

Manaus has a compact but real scene rather than a large one. There are several dedicated gay bars and clubs concentrated in Centro, one established gay men's sauna (Clube H2O), and an adult cruise venue, along with active LGBTQ+ organizations. It is far smaller than São Paulo or Rio, but the city sustains genuine nightlife, especially from Thursday to Sunday, and hosts a major annual Pride parade in September.
