Zipolite, a tiny, barefoot beach town on Oaxaca’s Pacific coast, plays way above its weight on the gay travel map. It has Mexico's only officially recognized nude beach. Decades of counterculture, naturist, and LGBTQ+ tradition built a place that feels relaxed, clothing-optional, and openly gay-friendly. No big resorts, no traffic lights, barely any paved roads. Just 1.5 km of golden sand, palapa bars, boho hotels, and a mixed crowd where queer travelers feel right at home. Mexico has nationwide marriage equality, and on this stretch of coast, that legal openness makes for a genuinely easygoing, welcoming mood.

The beach & nude culture

Everything here centers on the sand. Playa Zipolite runs roughly west (Roca Blanca) to east. The quieter, more nudist stretch is toward the western Roca Blanca end; palapa bars and restaurants line the shore. Clothing has been optional since the municipality formalized it in 2016, building on a naturist history from the 1970s. Be warned: the beach's nickname, Playa de los Muertos ("Beach of the Dead"), is earned. Currents and undertow are dangerous. Swim with real care and pay attention to warning flags.

The gay beach: Playa del Amor

The heart of gay Zipolite is Playa del Amor ("Beach of Love"). It’s a sheltered cove tucked behind a rocky headland at the far eastern end of the main beach. Get there by scrambling over stone steps, past the last palapa bars. Clothing-optional and calm, it’s the town's established gay and nudist cove—social by day, mostly men at sunset. It becomes the main LGBTQ+ gathering point on the coast. Bring water, cash, and sturdy footwear for the rocks; there are only a couple of small palapas.

Where to stay

Zipolite has a surprising number of gay and clothing-optional places to stay for such a small town. The landmark is Hotel Casa Nudista, the all-gay, clothing-optional hotel known for its Saturday naked pool parties—the highest-rated gay stay in town. Hotel Men Zipolite is a newer gay-owned, clothing-optional boutique with a men's-crowd pool scene. El Guayacán is a gay-owned, adults-only hillside retreat where nudity is welcome and the ocean views are great. For design-led, LGBT-owned boutique stays on the hillside, look to HEVEN Residence, Casa Sol & Maquil Villas, and Casa Playa del Amor, the last just steps from the gay cove. Hotel Nude is the original clothing-optional beachfront cabanas at the Roca Blanca end (and home base of the ELLA women's festival). El Alquimista, Casa KalMar, and Villa Aikia fill out the gay-popular, adults-oriented boutique options.

Bars & nightlife

Nightlife is small-town and beach-casual, not a club scene. La Máxima (also branded "Nue") is the town's best-known gay spot—a beachfront palapa bar with drag shows in high season, and the closest thing Zipolite has to a dedicated LGBTQ+ nightspot. SINnombre on Avenida Roca Blanca is a reliable gay-friendly bar for late drinks and dancing. ChiZme and the gay-owned Chavela del Mar serve creative mezcal cocktails in relaxed, jungle-garden settings. For dinner, La Providencia is a gay-popular restaurant with contemporary Mexican cooking in a lush hillside garden.

Cruising & discretion

The rocks and far-eastern end of the beach, around the approach to Playa del Amor, are a long-standing after-dark gay cruising area. It's busiest at sunset and through the November-to-April high season and Semana Santa. Mexico's marriage equality makes the coast generally relaxed, but this is a public beach. Be discreet, respect consent, and remember that public sex can draw fines and occasional patrols. Bring a light and watch your footing on the uneven rocks.

Events

Zipolite’s calendar centers on naturist and queer gatherings. The Festival Nudista (Zipolite Nudist Festival) each dry season and the ELLA Love Fest, a women's/queer naturist festival hosted at Hotel Nude in February, are the big draws. There's also a rolling program of pool parties at the gay hotels. Even outside festival weeks, the town's laid-back queer energy is constant.

Getting there & when to go

The nearest airports are Puerto Escondido (about 1 hour west) and Huatulco (about 1 hour east), both with domestic and some international connections. Colectivos and taxis run from Pochutla, the nearest town. The best time to visit is the dry season, roughly November to April, when the sea is calmer and the town is liveliest. The rainy summer months are quieter and hotter. Pack light, bring cash (ATMs are limited and unreliable), and expect an off-grid, unhurried pace.

常見問題

Yes — Zipolite is one of Mexico's most openly gay-friendly beach towns. It has a long counterculture and naturist tradition, an established gay cove (Playa del Amor), all-gay and gay-owned hotels, and gay-popular bars. Mexico has nationwide marriage equality, and the town's easygoing, clothing-optional culture makes LGBTQ+ travellers feel completely at home.

Playa del Amor ('Beach of Love') is the gay and nudist cove, tucked behind a rocky headland at the far eastern end of the main Playa Zipolite. You reach it by a short scramble over stone steps past the last palapa bars. It's clothing-optional, calm, and becomes the main LGBTQ+ gathering point at sunset, when the crowd is predominantly men.

Yes. Playa Zipolite is Mexico's only officially recognised nude beach — clothing has been optional here since the municipality formalised it in 2016. Nudity is most common toward the quieter western (Roca Blanca) end and at the gay cove Playa del Amor. Several hotels in town, including Hotel Casa Nudista, are also clothing-optional.

Hotel Casa Nudista is the landmark all-gay, clothing-optional hotel, famous for its Saturday naked pool parties. Hotel Men Zipolite is a gay-owned clothing-optional boutique, and El Guayacán is a gay-owned adults-only hillside retreat. HEVEN Residence, Casa Sol & Maquil Villas and Casa Playa del Amor are stylish LGBT-owned boutique stays; the last is closest to the gay cove.

Nightlife is small and beach-casual rather than a club scene. La Máxima (aka 'Nue') is the best-known gay venue, a beachfront palapa bar with drag shows in high season. SINnombre is a reliable gay-friendly bar for drinks and dancing, and ChiZme and Chavela del Mar serve cocktails in relaxed garden settings. The gay hotels also host pool parties.

The dry season, roughly November to April, is best — the sea is calmer and the town is liveliest. Key LGBTQ+ and naturist events include the ELLA Love Fest (a women's/queer naturist festival at Hotel Nude in February) and the Zipolite Nudist Festival in the dry season. Semana Santa (Easter week) is also very busy.

The nearest airports are Puerto Escondido (about an hour west) and Huatulco (about an hour east), both with domestic and some international flights. From Pochutla, the nearest town, colectivos and taxis run to Zipolite. There's no direct public transport from Oaxaca City, which is a scenic but winding 6–7 hour drive over the mountains.

Zipolite is generally very safe and welcoming for LGBTQ+ visitors, with an openly gay-friendly culture and Mexico's nationwide marriage equality. The main hazards are natural: the ocean has dangerous currents (its nickname is 'Beach of the Dead'), so swim with care. Bring cash as ATMs are limited, watch your footing on the rocky path to Playa del Amor, and use normal discretion in public areas.
