The honest summary: Castroville is a small farm town of about 7,500 people, mostly Latino, at the north end of the Monterey Peninsula. It has no gay district and no Pride. It does have something the rest of Monterey County lacks: Franco's Norma Jean's, a Saturday-only gay nightclub on Merritt Street, and as far as we can find the only dedicated gay club left in the county.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal in California since 2013, and state law bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in housing, work and public accommodation.
Where Castroville is
Castroville sits where Highways 1, 156 and 183 meet, about 8 miles northwest of Salinas, 16 miles northeast of Monterey and 28 miles southeast of Santa Cruz (figures from the town's Wikipedia entry). Merritt Street, which is Route 183 through town, is the main street, and almost everything mentioned here is on it. You will need a car: Monterey-Salinas Transit buses run through town, but nightlife hours and bus hours don't overlap.
The nearest airport is Monterey Regional (MRY), roughly 25 minutes away by car. San Jose (SJC) is about an hour and a quarter away.
Franco's Norma Jean's: the one gay club
Franco's Norma Jean's Nightclub is at 10639 Merritt Street. Monterey County Weekly has reported that owner Ernie Sanchez bought the bar in 1987 and turned it into a gay club a couple of years later. The name and the Marilyn Monroe paintings on the red walls are a nod to the town's best-known piece of trivia: Monroe was crowned the first honorary Artichoke Queen in 1948.
What to expect, going by Google reviews from 2022 to 2026: a large dance floor, a good sound system, drag shows and a Latin playlist of cumbia, salsa and reggaeton. One reviewer called it "the best gay cowboy atmosphere in Castroville." The crowd is local, drawn from the Salinas Valley and the Peninsula.
Hours are the catch. Google lists the club as open Saturday only, from 10pm to 1:45am, and a 2026 reviewer complained about exactly that. The club's website no longer loads, so call (831) 794-7423 or read the latest Google reviews before you drive out, especially on holiday weekends.
- The Castroville Artichoke Festival, the town's big annual event, held at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in recent years, was cancelled in May 2025 after 65 years (Local News Matters, May 2025). In August 2025 KION reported that the Castroville Coalition plans to bring it back to Castroville itself as two smaller, alcohol-free events in 2026. Dates had not been confirmed at the time of writing.
- Franco's old website, francosnormajeansclub.com, is dead, and some directories (MapQuest, a 2021 review saying the building had become apartments) still show the club as closed. Newer Google reviews from 2022 onwards describe it operating, so we list it as open, with a call-ahead warning.
- Older travel copy describes Castroville as a "bohemian" queer-friendly arts town with gay-owned B&Bs. We couldn't find any source for that, and we've removed it from this guide.
Where else to go
Castroville is a one-club town, so most LGBTQ+ life happens in the surrounding cities:
- Monterey (about 20 minutes south): Monterey Peninsula Pride holds its parade and festival in late June, running down Alvarado Street to Custom House Plaza. Old Capitol Books on Alvarado Street hosts a monthly LGBTQ+ social, the Rainbow Lounge. The Monterey Peninsula itself has had no gay bar since the late 1990s.
- Salinas (about 15 minutes east): The Epicenter runs youth programmes, including LGBTQ+ support.
- Santa Cruz (about 40 minutes north): the closest town with a fuller scene, including the long-running Blue Lagoon bar and the Diversity Center.
Where to stay
There are only a couple of motels in Castroville itself, so we list the nearest real options. Coastal Valley Inn on Merritt Street is the basic in-town choice, a short walk from Franco's. Captain's Inn in Moss Landing, five minutes west, is the best-reviewed small inn close by. Marina, Seaside and north Salinas have budget chains (Motel 6 Marina, Sand Castle Inn, Laurel Inn) within about 15 to 25 minutes. All of these are mainstream places listed for location. None is a gay guesthouse.
- Come on a Saturday or don't come for nightlife. On any other night the gay options are in Santa Cruz or online.
- Plan the drive home. Highway 1 and Highway 156 are dark, busy farm roads, and rideshare pickups late at night are thin outside Monterey and Salinas.
- Daytime: the Giant Artichoke restaurant on Merritt Street is the town's photo stop, and Moss Landing harbour and Elkhorn Slough (otters, kayaking) are five minutes west.
A few words in Spanish
Most of Castroville speaks Spanish at home, and Franco's plays a Latin mix. A few useful phrases: "¿Hay show de drag esta noche?" (Is there a drag show tonight?), "¿A qué hora abren?" (What time do you open?), "antro gay" (gay club, Mexican slang).
At a glance
- Gay bars and clubs: 1 (Franco's Norma Jean's, Saturdays only)
- Saunas: none
- Gay neighbourhood: none
- Pride: none in town; Monterey Peninsula Pride in late June
- Nearest fuller scene: Santa Cruz, about 40 minutes north
- Airport: Monterey (MRY), about 25 minutes
