Bostock v. Clayton County 案(2020…
The honest summary: Eugene is a liberal college town of about 177,000 people (176,654 at the 2020 census) with a large, well-organized queer community and no gay bar. Spectrum, the last dedicated LGBTQ+ bar, closed in August 2024, and nothing has replaced it. Queer nightlife now happens at a few welcoming bars and at monthly parties, mostly in the Whiteaker. Daytime community life is strong, and since February 2026 it has a real home in The Lavender Network on Willamette Street. Come for Pride in June, the university, the river trails and the food carts. Don't come expecting a gay strip.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal in Oregon since 19 May 2014 (Geiger v. Kitzhaber), and the Oregon Equality Act has banned discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in jobs, housing and public accommodations since 1 January 2008.
What the scene looks like now
Local reporting is consistent on this. KLCC and OPB covered Spectrum's closing in August 2024, and in December 2025 KLCC described a community that had found "new ways to connect" through pop-ups instead of a bar. An April 2026 piece in Lookout Eugene-Springfield on the city's drag scene said no dedicated queer venue had opened since. We found no announced replacement either. So plan your evenings around events, not addresses.
The Sparrow & Serpent, 211 Washington St (Whiteaker). This is the closest thing Eugene has to a queer bar in 2026. The owner describes it as a goth, Dungeons & Dragons and queer bar, and it sits in the old Old Nick's Pub building. Eugene Weekly's Best of Eugene 2025–26 readers' poll named it Best Queer Gathering Spot and gave its drag brunch, hosted by the performer Maliena, Best Drag Brunch. It's also the home of CHUB, a monthly queer dance party, with DJ Enriquedamnit. CHUB has hosted the official Eugene Pride after-party. Expect a mixed, alternative, very queer crowd, plus bingo nights, goth swaps and band shows.
Cowfish, 62 W Broadway (downtown). Google now lists it as Cowfish Cafe and Lounge. It's a small "everybody bar" with a dance floor that has had a queer following for years, and Eugene Weekly readers once voted its drag nights among the city's best. We couldn't find a named, recurring queer night there in 2025 or 2026. Treat it as gay-friendly, not gay, and check its social pages before going for a specific event.
Other names that come up. Crow & Cart (543 Blair Blvd) and Jameson's (115 W Broadway) were the runners-up for Best Queer Gathering Spot in the 2025–26 poll. That's the only source we have for either, so they aren't in our listings yet. A Queer Choir dance party at the WOW Hall (291 W 8th Ave) kicked off Pride week on 26 June 2026.
There's no gay sauna, bathhouse or men's club anywhere in Lane County, and we found no adult arcade with a gay following. Dating apps work well in town and around campus. Meet somewhere public first, as you would anywhere.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
- Spectrum (375 E 7th Ave): Eugene's last dedicated LGBTQ+ bar. It closed on 11 August 2024 after about six years (KLCC, OPB).
- 255 Madison: a newer queer bar that Lookout Eugene-Springfield reports closed suddenly in March 2024.
- Luckey's Club (933 Olive St): still open as a downtown bar with karaoke, pool and bands, and older guides still call it gay. Its monthly G.L.A.M. drag show ended in August 2015 (Eugene Weekly), and we found no queer programming there since, so we no longer list it.
- Wayward Lamb: a gay bar from 2015 to 2018, long closed.
- Dirty Pop: sometimes listed for Eugene, but it's a party brand based in New York and Atlanta. We found no Eugene edition.
Community spaces worth knowing
The Lavender Network, 1590 Willamette St. Lane County's first permanent LGBTQ+ community center opened on 10 February 2026 (OPB) in a building bought by HIV Alliance. It's named after a Eugene LGBTQ+ magazine from the 1980s and 1990s. Drop-in hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Services include HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis testing, PrEP navigation, Narcan, a food pantry and a clothing closet. Partner groups there include TransPonder, Queer Eugene and Eugene Pride. Several weekly events on our calendar meet here: queer crafting, a music jam and a jiu-jitsu class.
HIV Alliance, 1195 City View St. This is the regional HIV and sexual-health nonprofit, open weekdays 9 to 5, and it runs The Lavender Network.
TransPonder, 440 Maxwell Rd (Maxwell Community Hub). Trans and gender-diverse support, a food program, yoga and youth cohorts. It also holds a Starry Night Pride Prom in August.
Queer Eugene. Volunteers who keep the area's main queer community calendar, which is the source of most of the events on our Eugene page. It also runs clothing drives and swaps.
Eugene Gay Men's Chorus. Founded in 2018, it gives seasonal concerts. In 2026 these were at First United Methodist Church, 1376 Olive St, including a joint program with the Portland Gay Men's Chorus in March.
University of Oregon. The campus LGBTQ+ Education and Support Services office is in Oregon Hall, Suite 380.
Outliers Books, downtown. The former Black Sun Books reopened under a new owner in April 2026 and is growing its queer shelves, including a queer romance section. Its name nods to the Eugene Lesbian History Project.
Neighborhoods
Eugene has no gayborhood. Three areas matter.
- Downtown: the blocks around Broadway, Olive and Willamette, Kesey Square and the Hult Center. Cowfish, most bars, the Saturday Market and the Lavender Network (a little south on Willamette) are here.
- Whiteaker ("the Whit"): the old working-class neighborhood northwest of downtown, between the rail yards and the river. It has breweries, food carts, Blair Boulevard and the Sparrow & Serpent. In 2026 this is where queer nightlife leans.
- Campus / University District: east of downtown, with a younger crowd, the UO's LGBTQ+ office and cheaper motels along Franklin Boulevard.
Pride and events
Eugene Pride (Eugene/Springfield Pride) is the big one. In 2025 it moved from its long-time August date in Alton Baker Park to late June at the Lane Events Center, citing security and accessibility. The 2025 festival ran on Saturday 28 June. In 2026 it was held on Saturday 27 June, 11am–7pm, again at the Lane Events Center, with sliding-scale tickets from $1 to $20 and about 250 booths. The rally and march from Kesey Square were cancelled on 22 June 2026 after a permit dispute with Eugene Police, but the festival went ahead (KLCC). The 2027 date hadn't been announced at the time of writing, so check eugenepride.org.
Other dates:
- The Oregon Country Fair in Veneta, about 15 miles west, runs every July (10–12 July in 2026). It isn't a queer event, but it has a big, visible queer presence.
- TransPonder's Starry Night Pride Prom takes place in August.
- The Queer Eugene calendar posts something most days: support groups, book clubs, climbing nights, game nights, a lesbian potluck and Frontrunners walks.
Where to stay
Downtown is the easiest base. Everything in this guide is walkable or a short ride away. The Gordon Hotel (555 Oak St) and the Graduate by Hilton (66 E 6th Ave) are the central options. The Campbell House Inn (252 Pearl St) is a historic inn at the foot of Skinner Butte. Valley River Inn sits on the river path across the Willamette. None of Eugene's hotels markets itself as LGBTQ+, and we don't call any of them gay. Book early for Pride weekend, UO football Saturdays and track meets at Hayward Field, when prices jump.
- Getting in: Eugene Airport (EUG, Mahlon Sweet Field) is about 10 miles northwest of downtown, 15–20 minutes by car. Amtrak's Cascades and Coast Starlight stop at the downtown station. Portland is about 110 miles north on I-5, roughly two hours by car.
- Getting around: Lane Transit District buses and the EmX rapid line connect downtown, campus and Springfield. The city is flat and very bikeable, and the riverside paths are some of the best in the state.
- Weather: it rains a lot from November to April and stays dry and warm from July to September. Bring layers.
- Portland: for gay bars, men's clubs and a bigger Pride, Portland is the nearest real scene and an easy weekend add-on.
- Cruising: we don't publish outdoor cruising locations, and we found no documented spot in Eugene from more than one source. There's no official nude beach in Lane County either. The nearest well-known gay beach is Collins Beach on Sauvie Island near Portland.
