The honest summary: Kansas City has a small, friendly, mostly Missouri-side gay scene. About half a dozen real gay bars sit within a few blocks of each other in Midtown, along West 39th Street, Main Street and Broadway, and there is one newer queer club in Westport. There is no bathhouse, no leather bar and no lesbian bar any more. What it does well is drag, cheap drinks and a community that turns out in numbers for PrideFest in June.

Which side of the state line?

The metro straddles two states. Kansas City, Missouri (KCMO) is the big city, with downtown, the Crossroads, Midtown, Westport and the Country Club Plaza, and it is where almost all LGBTQ+ nightlife is. Kansas City, Kansas (KCK) and the Johnson County suburbs (Overland Park, Lenexa, Prairie Village) are mostly residential. For a gay weekend, stay on the Missouri side, ideally somewhere between Crown Center and the Plaza.

Where the scene is

Midtown is the centre. The bars are clustered around Main Street and Broadway between 33rd and 39th Streets, with Missie B's at the western end of West 39th Street. Side Kicks, Woody's and Hamburger Mary's are a two-minute walk from each other near Broadway and 37th. Sidestreet is a few blocks north-east on 33rd Street.

Westport, just south-west of Midtown, is the city's older mainstream nightlife district and now has Q Kansas City and Bistro 303. You can walk from Westport to the 39th Street bars in 10 to 15 minutes.

The Crossroads Arts District south of downtown is queer-inclusive and busy on First Fridays, but it has no gay bars. Older guides that call it the gay district are wrong.

Bars and clubs

    • Missie B's is the anchor: a gay-owned drag club on West 39th Street, open since 1994. It has drag and karaoke all week, several bars and a patio, and it stays open until 3am at weekends. The bar is listed as cash only.
    • Side Kicks Saloon is the country-western gay bar, on Main Street since 1990. There is line dancing and two-step, plus drag on show nights. It is a cash-only dive and opens from early afternoon until 3am.
    • Woodys KC is a gay sports and video bar on Broadway, next to the Pride Stairs it painted in 2019. It hosts several of the city's niche nights: Bear Bust on the first Saturday, UNDERDOGS (pup and leather) on the fourth Saturday, and LIPS, a sapphic night. Check woodyskc.com for dates.
    • Sidestreet Bar is one of the oldest gay bars in the city, a cash-only neighbourhood dive on East 33rd Street with a large patio. It opens at 10am, so it is the place for a daytime drink.
    • Hamburger Mary's Kansas City is the drag diner in the Uptown Theater building on Broadway. It does drag bingo several times a week, weekly shows and a Sunday drag brunch, and it is closed on Mondays. Book ahead.
    • Q Kansas City is a queer-owned two-floor club on Westport Road that opened in February 2025. It is open Thursday to Saturday, 8pm to 3am, with late drag at 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays (about $5 cover) and Sapphic Fridays.
    • Bistro 303 is a gay-owned bistro and cocktail bar in Westport, and a good place for dinner before going out.

Over in KCK, Club Sparks on Kansas Avenue appears in older gay bar directories, but we could not find any current LGBTQ nights there in 2026. Call before you make the trip.

Queer Bar Takeover is a monthly party, usually on the second Saturday, that takes a crowd into a different straight bar each time. It is run by the team behind Q Kansas City; check queerconnect.org for the next venue.

    Leather, bears and lesbian nights

Kansas City has had no dedicated leather bar since the Dixie Belle Saloon on Main Street closed. The scene now lives in club nights: the KC Pioneers leather club (founded in the mid-1970s) meets at Missie B's and holds a summer cigar social at Sidestreet, and Woody's runs Bear Bust and UNDERDOGS. For gear, Leather Masters KC in Westport has made leather goods for the local community since 1989.

There is no lesbian bar either; The Pitch asked where they had all gone back in 2023. Women and sapphic crowds go to Sapphic Fridays at Q Kansas City and LIPS at Woody's, and Sapphic Con, a three-day festival, ran for the first time in September 2026.

    Saunas and cruising

There is no gay bathhouse or sex club in the Kansas City metro. Listings for a "Flex KC" bathhouse are fake, and so is a downtown leather and cruise bar called "The Bolt" (the real Bolt is in Sacramento). Hook-ups happen on the apps. Missouri and Kansas both prosecute public sex, so don't treat any park as a safe alternative.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

    • Buddies (3715 Main) closed in June 2019 after its owner died; the space is now Boogies Midtown Tavern.
    • Fountain Haus (Westport Road and Broadway) was a multi-level LGBTQ club that opened in 2022 and closed on 27 January 2024.
    • Gaels Public House (5424 Troost), a queer sports bar, announced it would close on 6 November 2026.
    • Kansas City Center for Inclusion on Main Street merged into Our Spot KC; its groups now run under that name.
    • Uptown Lounge (3400 Main) closed in August 2026. It was never a gay bar.
    • Incognito Lounge, Blue Rose and In The Lowest Ferns have appeared on gay bar lists, including ours. We found no evidence that Incognito exists, and the other two are straight bars, so we have taken all three off the list.

    Where to stay

Stay between Crown Center and the Plaza and the bars are a short ride away. Aida Hotel is a small boutique hotel on East 44th Street, close to Midtown. On the Plaza, The Fontaine is five minutes by car from the 39th Street bars. Near Crown Center and Union Station, The Westin Kansas City at Crown Center is on the streetcar line. Downtown options include Hotel Phillips Kansas City, Curio Collection by Hilton and the historic Hotel Savoy Kansas City, Tapestry Collection by Hilton (now the Hotel Savoy). Hotel No Vacancy® is on the edge of the Crossroads. The casino hotels north of the river are a long way from the scene.

    Pride and events

    • Kansas City PrideFest is run by Our Spot KC (kcpride.org). The 2026 edition was 5-7 June in Theis Park, near 47th Street and the Nelson-Atkins Museum. The parade was on Saturday 6 June at 11am, starting at Westport Road and Broadway and running south down Broadway and Mill Creek Parkway to the park. The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing; it is usually the first full weekend of June.
    • Smaller metro Prides in June 2026 included Independence (13 June), Prairie Village and Lawrence (6 June), Gardner (28 June) and People's Pride KC in the West Bottoms (27-28 June).
    • The IGBO Annual Tournament, the International Gay Bowling Organization's yearly event, is in Kansas City from 19 to 23 May 2027.
    • Heartland Men's Chorus is in its 41st season. Its holiday show "Don We Now!" is on 4-6 December 2026 at the Folly Theater.
    • The Missouri Gay Rodeo Association's Show-Me State Rodeo is held in May at Hale Arena (8-10 May in 2026). Out Here Now, the city's LGBT film festival since 2000, screens at UMKC.
    • No Divide KC runs the Queer Narratives Festival, an eight-week arts festival each summer.

    Community

Our Spot KC runs PrideFest and works on LGBTQ+ homelessness and support groups. No Divide KC is a queer arts nonprofit. West Bottoms Plant Co in the West Bottoms is a queer-owned plant shop. The Mid-America LGBT Chamber of Commerce (founded 2012) publishes a busy events calendar. The KC Anti-Violence Project runs a 24-hour hotline on 816-561-0550.

Laws and safety in more detail

    • Kansas City, Missouri: the non-discrimination ordinance covers sexual orientation (1993) and gender identity (2008). In 2023 the City Council passed a resolution making the city a refuge for gender-affirming care. The 2019 city ban on conversion therapy was repealed in May 2026 after a US Supreme Court ruling, and the mayor has proposed a replacement.
    • Missouri: marriage equality applies, although the 2004 constitutional ban is still in the text. The age of consent is 17. Minors cannot receive hormones or puberty blockers until that rule expires on 28 August 2027, and Amendment 3 on the 3 November 2026 ballot would write the ban into the state constitution. There is no drag law.
    • Kansas: since 26 February 2026, under SB 244, driving licences whose gender marker doesn't match sex at birth are invalid, and a bathroom law applies in public buildings. The 2025 ban on youth gender-affirming care was temporarily blocked by a state court in May 2026. Kansas City, Kansas has had LGBTQ+ non-discrimination protections since 2018.
    • Trans visitors driving on a Kansas-issued ID, or using restrooms in public buildings on the Kansas side, should take the 2026 Kansas law into account.

Getting around

The KC Streetcar is free and runs from the River Market through downtown, Crown Center and Union Station. Since October 2025 it also runs down Main Street to UMKC, which takes it past the Midtown bar cluster around 39th and Main. Beyond that line, Kansas City is a car city; rideshares are cheap at night. Kansas City International (MCI) is about 25 km north-west of downtown. Its new single terminal opened in February 2023, and the drive takes about 25-30 minutes.

FAQ

Where are the gay bars in Kansas City?

Mostly in Midtown on the Missouri side: Missie B's on West 39th Street, and Side Kicks, Woody's and Hamburger Mary's around Main and Broadway near 37th Street, with Sidestreet on 33rd Street. Q Kansas City and Bistro 303 are in Westport, a 10-minute walk away.

Does Kansas City have a gay sauna?

No. There is no gay bathhouse or sex club anywhere in the metro, and online listings for one are fake.

When is Kansas City Pride?

KC PrideFest is in early June in Theis Park, with a Saturday morning parade from Westport down Broadway. In 2026 it ran 5-7 June. The 2027 dates have not been announced; check kcpride.org.

Is there a lesbian bar in Kansas City?

Not any more. Look for Sapphic Fridays at Q Kansas City and the LIPS night at Woody's.

Should I stay in Missouri or Kansas?

Missouri. The gay bars, Pride and most of the city's nightlife are on the Missouri side, and Kansas's 2026 ID and bathroom law is a further reason for trans visitors to base themselves there.
