The honest summary: Mesa is Arizona's third-largest city, with about 514,000 people in the East Valley of metro Phoenix, and it has no gay bar, no gay sauna and no annual Pride. That isn't hostility. Mesa passed a non-discrimination ordinance in 2021 and scores 100 on the Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index, but the Valley's queer nightlife grew up in Phoenix, about 30 minutes west, and never moved east. What Mesa does have is quieter: a queer-owned café, a co-op café that hosts Pride and PFLAG events, a weekly youth group run by one·n·ten, an Open and Affirming church, a big arts centre that books touring drag shows, and light rail that gets you to Tempe and central Phoenix without a car. Treat Mesa as a base, and plan your nights out in Phoenix.
Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal in Arizona since 17 October 2014; Arizona has no statewide law against anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination in housing or public accommodation, but Mesa's own ordinance, passed 5-2 by the City Council on 1 March 2021 and in force since 29 June 2021, covers sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing and public accommodation.
Bars and clubs: there isn't one in Mesa
We checked Phoenix New Times, GayCities, Travel Gay, the Copper Courier's 2025 list of Arizona LGBTQ+ spots and the Downtown Mesa listings, and none of them names a gay bar inside Mesa city limits as of October 2026. Two names come up when people search, and neither is one:
Jupe's on W Guadalupe Road appears under Yelp's "gay bars" filter for Mesa, but every description of it is a cash-only Minnesota Vikings dive bar that has been open since 1982. We found no queer events and no self-description as gay.
BS West still shows up on some "gay Mesa" pages. It was in Scottsdale, not Mesa, and it closed in January 2024 after 35 years.
For a real gay bar, go to Phoenix. Most of the Valley's bars are in or near the Melrose District on 7th Avenue and in central Phoenix: Stacy's at Melrose, The Rock, Kobalt, Charlie's (the country-western bar) and Nu Towne Saloon, which has been going since 1971. Drag in Mesa has mostly been one-off. Rebel Wine Lounge on W Main Street ran a regular Sunday drag brunch, but it closed its Mesa location on 24 July 2026 and moved to The Gilmore in Gilbert. Saunas and cruising
There's no gay sauna or bathhouse in Mesa. The Valley has two, both in Phoenix and both open around the clock: The Chute on E Indian School Road and FLEX Spas on S Black Canyon Highway. Infrared and cold-plunge studios in Mesa that call themselves saunas are wellness businesses, not gay venues.
We don't list any cruising area in Mesa. No place was named by two independent, current sources, and we never publish directions or meeting times for public places. Under Arizona law, sex in a public place can be charged as public sexual indecency.
Community, cafés and support
Brick Road Coffee Mesa, 1337 S Gilbert Road: the second café from Gabe Hagen and Jesse Shank, the married couple who run the queer-owned Brick Road Coffee in Tempe. It opened in 2025 as Empower Coffee Roasters, next to their Prism Coffee Lab roastery, and now uses the Brick Road name. It runs a monthly book club and evenings with local LGBTQ+ groups. If you want a queer daytime spot in Mesa, this is it.
BeanChain Coffee, 1110 W Southern Avenue: a worker-directed co-op café and free co-working space, open 8am to 5pm daily. It isn't a queer venue, but PFLAG Phoenix held an advocacy night here on 25 August 2026, and the Pride Book Fair of LGBTQ+ authors took place here on 10 October 2026.
one·n·ten Mesa: the Phoenix nonprofit one·n·ten runs a Monday-evening group for LGBTQ+ young people aged 11 to 24 near Southern Avenue and Lindsay Road. For safety, the address goes out by text (send @msonenten to 81010).
Desert Heritage Church, 1020 N Horne Street: a United Church of Christ and Disciples of Christ congregation listed as Open and Affirming, the UCC's term for formally welcoming LGBTQ+ people, since 2008. Sunday service is at 10am.
Prism: the LGBTQ+ student club on ASU's Polytechnic campus in southeast Mesa.
PFLAG Phoenix has no Mesa chapter. Its monthly meeting is on the third Thursday in Tempe; see PFLAG Phoenix.
Sexual health: the CDC's GetTested directory lists free or low-cost HIV testing and PrEP in Mesa at VEN Centers (2152 S Vineyard), Terros Health Stapley (1111 S Stapley Drive), Planned Parenthood (1235 S Gilbert Road), Valleywise Mesa (950 E Main Street) and Sun Life Family Health (10032 E Southern Avenue). Call ahead for hours.
Mesa's city government also has an LGBTQ+ liaison in the city executive's office, one of the things that earned the 100 HRC score.
Pride and events
Mesa has no annual Pride festival or parade, and we found no announcement for 2027. What has happened is smaller and occasional: the Downtown Mesa Association ran Pride editions of its Market on Main on 11 February and 10 June 2023, and a Mesa Pride Night with more than 30 vendors and a DJ took place at Republica Empanada on E 1st Avenue on 28 June 2025.
The big Pride for the whole Valley is Phoenix Pride, held in October at Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix (2026 was the weekend of 10 October). Phoenix Pride also runs the spring Rainbows Festival downtown. Tempe holds a Pride party at Centerpoint Plaza in June (6 June 2026). Neighbourhoods
No part of Mesa is an LGBTQ+ neighbourhood. For a visitor, four areas matter:
Downtown Mesa along Main Street: Mesa Arts Center (Arizona's largest arts centre, with four theatres), independent restaurants, and seven light rail stations from Sycamore to Gilbert Road.
Riverview / Wrigleyville West in west Mesa: Sloan Park, where the Chicago Cubs play spring training, the Riverview shops, and the closest hotels to Tempe.
Fiesta District around Southern Avenue and Alma School Road: freeway hotels, BeanChain, and the quickest drive to Sky Harbor.
East Mesa and Mesa Gateway: golf, the Superstition Mountains, and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. It's pleasant, but central Phoenix is 40 minutes or more away.
"Illusions drag show Mesa" and similar listings on ticket aggregators have no Mesa address; Illusions is in Phoenix.
Drink Me! Tea Room, which hosts drag bingo, is sometimes listed under Mesa; it's on E Warner Road in Tempe.
Hilton Phoenix East/Mesa is now the DoubleTree, and the Phoenix Marriott Mesa is now Delta Hotels.
Practical tips
Getting here: Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) is about 10 miles west of central Mesa. Phoenix-Mesa Gateway (AZA), in southeast Mesa, mostly has low-cost domestic flights.
Light rail: Valley Metro's A Line runs along Main Street through downtown Mesa, with stations from Sycamore to Gilbert Road (the Gilbert Road extension opened in 2019), and continues through Tempe and ASU into central Phoenix. Get to the Melrose District by rideshare from a central Phoenix station.
Heat: July highs average about 106°F (41°C) and the record is 121°F. November to April is the season to visit; March is the busiest month because of spring training.
Time: Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time all year (no daylight saving), so in summer Mesa is on the same time as Los Angeles.
Discrimination: if a Mesa business, landlord or employer discriminates against you, complaints under the 2021 ordinance go to the City of Mesa. In an emergency call 911.
A few words
English is spoken everywhere, and Spanish is widely heard. Locals say "the Valley" for metro Phoenix and "the East Valley" for Mesa, Tempe, Chandler and Gilbert, "the 60" for the Superstition Freeway, and "Cactus League" for spring-training baseball. In summer, a "monsoon" is the afternoon storm season from June to September, not one storm.
