Dallas has the most concentrated gay bar scene in Texas. Everything runs through Cedar Springs Road in Oak Lawn, a mile-long strip that has been the center of the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife for decades. The bars here are not a rotating crop of gay-for-a-month pop-ups — most have been operating for years, some for a very long time, and they have the regulars to show for it.

What Oak Lawn lacks in size it makes up for in consistency. You will find something open and busy any night of the week, not just on weekends. The crowd is majority gay men but mixed in practice. Lesbians, trans people, and straight allies all move through the scene, particularly on nights when big drag shows draw a broader crowd.

Cedar Springs Road

Cedar Springs is the spine of the scene. The bars are spread along about a mile of road and the surrounding side streets, mostly between Reagan Street to the south and Throckmorton Street to the north. You can walk from one end to the other in fifteen minutes, passing most of the major venues on the way.

The street has its own rhythm. On weeknights, things stay relatively calm until 9 or 10pm. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday it fills up steadily from 9pm, peaks around midnight, and clears out fast as 2am approaches — Texas last call is unforgiving. Sundays have their own energy, calmer but with a loyal crowd who come for the afternoon happy hours that stretch into evening.

The patios matter here. Dallas weather is excellent from March through May and again in October and November, and the bars take full advantage. If you visit in spring or fall, expect to spend as much time outside as in.

What's Here

The bar mix on Cedar Springs covers most of what you'd want. Dance clubs with regular DJ nights, dive bars where the beer is cheap and the regulars are friendly, drag venues with nightly shows, and at least one leather and bear bar for those looking for something with a different energy. There is no equivalent of a London or New York leather bar district, but Dallas has one or two solid options for that crowd.

Drag is central to the Dallas scene in a way that feels genuine rather than performative. The performers at the main venues are often long-term Dallas figures who have been doing this for years. Shows run most nights at the major venues, not just on weekends.

    Practical Notes

Texas bars close at 2am without exception. Last call comes at 1:30am at most places. Budget accordingly — if you want a full night out, start by 9pm.

Cover charges are common on Friday and Saturday nights at the dance clubs. Amounts vary from $5 to $20 depending on the venue and the night. Arrive early to avoid a line and sometimes to skip the cover.

Parking on Cedar Springs is difficult on busy nights. Side streets a few blocks off the strip are better bets. Rideshare is the practical choice if you're drinking — Uber and Lyft are both active in Oak Lawn.

Happy hours in Dallas run late by some standards — many bars offer drink specials until 9pm. If you want to drink cheaply, start at 7 or 8pm.
