Church-Wellesley Village is Canada's largest and best-known LGBTQ+ neighbourhood. It occupies seven blocks of Church Street between Carlton and Bloor Streets — roughly 750 metres north to south — with the intersection of Church and Wellesley as the traditional centre. Since roughly 1985 it has held Canada's highest concentration of queer bars, cafés, businesses and community organisations. The Alexander Wood statue at the southern gateway (2005) and the Toronto AIDS Memorial mid-Village (1993) anchor two of its three landmark sites; the 519 Community Centre is the third. The Village's emergence as a queer neighbourhood dates to the mid-1970s, when Toronto's queer commercial life migrated north from Yonge Street's St James Town in response to declining safety on Yonge's working-class strip. By 1980 the intersection of Church and Wellesley held enough queer bars — the Barn, Boots, Chaps, the Toolbox — that the neighbourhood was already known internally as "the Village". The February 1981 Bathhouse Raids (see separate entry) and the subsequent protest infrastructure consolidated the neighbourhood politically as well as commercially. In June 2016 the City of Toronto installed permanent rainbow crosswalks at the three main Village intersections (Church/Alexander, Church/Wellesley, Church/Isabella) — Canada's first permanent municipal rainbow street infrastructure. Toronto Pride week (last week of June) sees the entire Village pedestrianised and Church Street closed for parties, the Trans March, the Dyke March and the main Pride Parade. Free, open 24/7 as public street. Wellesley and College subway both serve the Village; the walk end-to-end takes 15 minutes. Best walked in the afternoon; nightlife starts around 22:00. On the standard Toronto queer heritage day this is the anchor — start at the Alexander Wood statue, walk north through the Village stopping at the 519 and AIDS Memorial, and end at the Isabella Street cluster (The ArQuives, Casey House).
