About This Event

Seksualiti Merdeka ('Sexual Freedom') is Malaysia's annual LGBTQ+ rights festival. It's in Kuala Lumpur, and it's less a street parade and more a series of arts events, films, and discussions. That's because Malaysia has laws and social norms that make a parade difficult.

The name itself, "Seksualiti Merdeka," plays directly on "Merdeka," Malaysia's national independence. It's a way of saying sexual freedom is as basic as political freedom. Police have tried to ban the festival, but it keeps going, a real show of guts from Malaysian queer activists.
