Gay Rhodes — Dein vollständiger Guide

Alles, was man vor der Reise wissen sollte.

Rhodes occupies a specific position in the Greek island hierarchy — it is large enough to have genuine urban infrastructure, historically significant enough to justify UNESCO World Heritage status for its Old Town, warm enough for an exceptionally long beach season, and just gay-friendly enough to be a comfortable destination for LGBTQ+ travellers without being a gay destination in the dedicated sense that Mykonos is. For the gay traveller who wants a Greek island experience that combines extraordinary medieval history with good beaches and a relaxed social atmosphere, without the Mykonos price point and social intensity, Rhodes is the natural alternative. Rhodes Town — the island's capital — is divided into two distinct parts: the medieval Old Town, enclosed within enormous Crusader walls and containing a World Heritage Site of extraordinary preservation, and the modern New Town that surrounds it. The Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval urban environments in the Mediterranean: the Street of the Knights, the Palace of the Grand Master, the Byzantine churches converted to mosques and back again, the mosques themselves, the Ottoman hamams and hans — all of it layered in the dense, walkable space of a walled medieval city that has been continuously inhabited for 700 years. The warren of streets inside the walls, particularly the Jewish Quarter (Evraiki) with its own synagogue and community history, rewards several hours of unhurried exploration. The gay scene in Rhodes is small and concentrated in the bar areas of the New Town, particularly around the Orfanidou Street area — known locally as the Bar Street — and in some of the more open venues near the northern tip of the island. The island's tourist infrastructure is heavily oriented toward the mainstream package holiday market that Rhodes has dominated since the 1970s, and the specifically LGBTQ+ venues are correspondingly limited. What Rhodes does offer is a broadly gay-welcoming atmosphere throughout its tourism-facing businesses: the bars, hotels, and beach areas in Rhodes Town and along the northern coast are accustomed to LGBTQ+ guests and offer the easy acceptance of a well-travelled tourist destination. The beaches along the northern and northeastern coast — Elli Beach, immediately below the New Town, and Faliraki further south — are the main resort beach areas. Elli Beach has an informal gay-friendly section toward the far end of its length, away from the main tourist concentration. The water throughout Rhodes is warm and clear from May through October. Practical notes for Rhodes: the island has direct flight connections from most major European cities (Rhodes International Airport, RHO) and is also accessible by ferry from Piraeus (Athens port, approximately 14-18 hours overnight or 7-8 hours on faster ferries). The tourist season runs May to October; outside this window the island becomes significantly quieter and many venues close. Rhodes Town is the most rewarding base for exploring both the historical and the beach aspects of the island; the Old Town accommodations inside the walls are expensive but provide an extraordinary setting. LGBTQ+ travellers visiting Rhodes should treat it as a broadly welcoming destination rather than a gay destination — the warm reception throughout the tourism industry more than compensates for the absence of a dedicated gay scene.
