Fantasy Fest ist Key Wests spektakulärstes Event und eine der bemerkenswertesten öffentlichen Feiern in den USA — ein zehntägiges Festival jeden Oktober seit 1979, das die Insel in einen Karneval aus Kostümen, Bodypainting, Themen-Straßenpartys und ungehemmter öffentlicher Feier verwandelt. Es zieht über 75.000 Besucher auf eine Insel mit 25.000 dauerhaften Einwohnern und füllt jedes Hotel, jede Pension und jede Ferienunterkunft. Fantasy Fest hat tiefe LGBTQ+-Beteiligung in seiner DNA: Die Feier des Kostüms, die Toleranz gegenüber öffentlicher Nacktheit und Bodypainting, die Straßenparty-Kultur und die explizite Bejahung sexueller Freiheit und performativer Identität machen es zu einem natürlichen Gay-Event, auch wenn es einen breiten Querschnitt der amerikanischen Partykultur anzieht. Der Pretenders in Paradise Kostümwettbewerb ist das Tages-Signature-Event. Die Masquerade March Straßenparade am Schlusssamstag zieht geschätzte 75.000 Zuschauer entlang der Duval Street an. Die bemalten Painted Ladies, die durch die Straßen der Old Town laufen, sind das ikonischste Bild von Fantasy Fest. Unterkünfte müssen acht bis zehn Monate im Voraus gebucht werden; es ist die gefragteste Woche im Key-West-Kalender.
