Groningen Pride 2026

Groningen Pride is the northern Netherlands' major LGBTQ+ celebration — a summer event that reflects the city's specific character as a university town with a young, politically engaged queer community. The event is organised by COC Groningen in partnership with the city's student organisations and includes a street parade through the city centre, festival programming at the Grote Markt, and evening events across Groningen's gay and gay-friendly venues. Groningen Pride has grown significantly over recent years as the university partnership has brought institutional backing and a larger programme to what was historically a smaller community event. The combination of the Martinitoren as a backdrop, the Grote Markt as a festival space, and the energy of a city where students form a quarter of the population gives the event a specific character — youthful, politically engaged, and with a strong sense that the future of Dutch LGBTQ+ rights is being discussed and shaped here as much as in Amsterdam. For visitors in the Netherlands in summer 2026, Groningen Pride offers a distinctive alternative to the larger but more tourist-oriented Amsterdam WorldPride.

Gay Groningen: The Far North's Student City

Groningen is the capital of the far north of the Netherlands — a city that lies closer to Hamburg than to The Hague, in a flat agricultural landscape that feels genuinely remote from the Randstad's density. Within the city, however, the atmosphere could not be more different from its surroundings: Groningen has one of the highest student-to-resident ratios of any city in the Netherlands (57,000 students among 234,000 residents), and the result is a social energy that makes the city feel much larger and more active than its population numbers suggest.

The gay scene in Groningen is modest by the standards of Amsterdam or Rotterdam but active and well-organised for the city's size. The driving force is the student population — young, progressive, and in Groningen specifically exposed to the political consciousness that the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen's humanities and social science faculties tend to produce. The COC Groningen chapter is particularly active in university outreach and runs programming that integrates with the student scene in ways that the larger-city chapters, serving more diverse and less student-centric communities, cannot.

The Gay Scene

Groningen's gay venues concentrate around the Grote Markt and the streets running south toward the Vismarkt. The Grote Markt itself — a large square surrounded by cafés, bars, and the Martinitoren (the city's medieval tower, comparable to Utrecht's Dom Tower in its dominance of the skyline) — is the social heart of the city and includes several gay-friendly venues in its surrounding streets. The specifically gay bars are fewer than in the larger Dutch cities, but the city's general social openness means that the distinction between 'gay bar' and 'gay-friendly bar' is less meaningful in Groningen than it might be elsewhere.

Groningen Pride is a summer event that has grown alongside the city's cultural confidence and the COC Groningen chapter's increasing capacity. The event is explicitly student-city in character: more politically engaged, more community-focused, and with a younger average age than the larger Dutch Pride events.

The City Itself

Groningen rewards the visitor who approaches it without Amsterdam expectations. The Martinitoren — 97 metres, climbable, with views across the flat Groningen province that extend to the horizon — is the dominant presence in the city's skyline and worth the climb on a clear day. The Groninger Museum, designed by Alessandro Mendini and opened in 1994, is one of the most provocative museum buildings in the Netherlands — a deliberately fragmented structure that caused controversy on opening and has become a landmark. The Noorderplantsoen park north of the city centre is the social green space where Groningen's student population congregates in summer, and it serves as the venue for several major events including a summer music festival.

The city's cycling culture is even more pronounced than the Dutch average — Groningen consistently ranks as the most cycling-intensive city in the Netherlands, which is itself the most cycling-intensive country in the world. A rental bike is the only sensible way to navigate the city and its surroundings.

Getting There

Groningen is 2 hours from Amsterdam Centraal on the Intercity Direct train — a journey that passes through the agricultural heart of the Netherlands and is pleasant in its own right. The city is less easily combined with the Randstad cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague) in a single day trip than those cities are with each other, but makes a natural base for exploring the northern Netherlands — including the Wadden Sea islands (Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling), the Groningen museum quarter, and the Drenthe province landscapes to the south.
