The honest summary: Örebro is a university and county town of about 160,000 people in Närke, two hours west of Stockholm by train, and it has no gay bar, no gay club and no gay sauna. We checked Swedish and English sources in October 2026 and found none. Queer life here runs through three things: RFSL Örebro's house on Västra Nobelgatan, a roving club night called Klubb Homo, and Nerike Pride at the end of summer. If that sounds thin, it is. But the RFSL weekly cafés are open to visitors, and Stockholm's bars are an easy day trip.
Legal in one line: Sex between men has been legal in Sweden since 1944, with an equal age of consent since 1978. Registered partnership arrived in 1995, joint adoption in 2003, and same-sex marriage and the Discrimination Act both in 2009. A new gender recognition law took effect on 1 July 2025 and lowered the age for changing legal gender to 16.
A bit of history
Örebro has a claim most bigger cities can't make. On 15 May 1971 a small group of about a dozen people walked from Järntorget to Stortorget, and the march is often described as Sweden's first gay demonstration. It was organised by Vanja Södergren. A local history group, Gay Power Club 2, keeps the story alive. RFSL's Örebro branch dates from 1981.
The city had its own Örebro Pride from 2012. That association shut down in January 2019, and since then RFSL Örebro and Örebro Rättighetscenter have run the festival as Nerike Pride. One thing to know: the old domain orebropride.se now belongs to an unrelated blog, so use nerikepride.se.
RFSL Örebro: the real meeting place
RFSL Örebro, Västra Nobelgatan 19, a short walk from the central station, calls itself the city's living room for LGBTQI people. Its calendar on orebro.rfsl.se is the most reliable guide to what's on in any given week. When we checked in October 2026 it listed:
- Tisdagscafé, Tuesdays 20:00–23:00 for adults (18+): coffee, food, board games and hosts who make sure newcomers aren't left standing alone. It's free.
- Testpoint, Thursdays 16:30–19:00: free, anonymous drop-in rapid tests for HIV and syphilis, aimed at men who have sex with men, trans people and LGBTQI newcomers to Sweden.
- A trans café on Mondays, a seniors' café on Wednesday afternoons and youth evenings for ages 13–18 on Fridays.
Times shift now and then, and RFSL itself warns that the calendar sometimes shows times an hour out. You can phone 019-14 42 32 or email orebro@rfsl.se to check.
Bars and nights out
There is no gay bar in Örebro. Older guide text on this site and elsewhere named Stortorget-area bars as "LGBTQ+ friendly". We couldn't find any independent source for that, so we've taken them off our bar list.
What does exist is Klubb Homo, a queer club night that launched on 1 March 2025 at Boulebar on Slottsgatan. Its founders, Martina Fredriksson and Cecilia Elfving, planned four or five nights a year, with schlager, rock and indie. The most recent edition we could confirm was on 9 May 2026 at Hamnplan1. The venue changes, so follow Klubb Homo on Facebook or Tickster for the next date. Boulebar also hosts the official Pride party.
For a proper gay night out, take the train to Stockholm. Södermalm's bars and the clubs listed on our Stockholm page are about two hours away. Check the time of the last train back before you go.
Saunas, cruising and beaches
We found no gay sauna, no cruising club and no documented cruising area in Örebro, in Swedish or English sources. Gustavsvik, the big water park and spa south of the centre, is a mainstream family attraction, and it is closed for renovation from 1 September to 31 December 2026. There is no gay beach.
Nerike Pride
Nerike Pride is a week of talks, parties, church services and a parade, organised by RFSL Örebro and Örebro Rättighetscenter.
- 2024: 19–25 August, with the parade on Sunday 25 August from Virginska gymnasiet on Fabriksgatan to Stadsparken.
- 2025: 25–31 August. The organisers cancelled the official parade for lack of resources, and a private march went ahead on 30 August from the Stadsparken stage.
- 2026: 31 August–6 September, with the parade on Saturday 5 September at 13:00 from Wadköping through Stadsparken to RFSU Pridetorget on Våghustorget.
- 2027: nerikepride.se has announced 16–22 August 2027. The full programme wasn't out when we checked.
We found no reliable attendance figures, so we won't guess.
Other queer-friendly services
The Church of Sweden in Örebro has held an LGBTQ certification since spring 2023 and holds rainbow masses during Pride. Region Örebro län's youth clinics (ungdomsmottagningar) and its STI clinic are HBTQ-certified, which means staff have had training in LGBTQ health.
Where to stay
Stay central. The streets between the station, the castle and Stortorget hold almost every hotel worth booking, and the whole centre is walkable. Home Hotel Borgen sits in a 19th-century building by the river, a few minutes from the station, and includes breakfast, afternoon fika and a light evening meal. Clarion Hotel Örebro on Kungsgatan has a pool, a sauna and a lobby bar. Scandic Örebro Central and Livin Station are right by the station. Elite Stora Hotellet, opposite the castle, is having its main building renovated, and guests are housed in the adjacent Lilla Hotellet until spring 2027. Our hotels page lists eleven options. None of them is a gay hotel, and we don't pretend otherwise.
Örebro is built around the Svartån river and Örebro Castle (Örebro slott), which sits on an islet in the river in the middle of town. Follow the river east through Stadsparken to Wadköping, a quarter of old wooden houses that were moved here and now hold craft shops and cafés. Svampen, the mushroom-shaped water tower from 1958, has a café and a viewing deck. Stortorget, with St Nicolai church, and Kungsgatan are the main square and shopping street, and Örebro Konsthall shows contemporary art. Lake Hjälmaren lies east of the city.
Getting there and around
Trains from Stockholm Central take about two hours, and Mälartåg runs services from Stockholm Arlanda in roughly two hours fifteen minutes. Gothenburg is around three hours by train and Karlstad about two hours. Örebro Airport (ORB) handles mostly seasonal charter flights to the Mediterranean and the Canaries, so for scheduled flights use Arlanda. Local buses are run by Länstrafiken Örebro, and cycling is the easiest way to get around the flat centre.
Practical tips
- Cards and phone payments work almost everywhere; plenty of places don't take cash at all.
- The RFSL Tuesday café is the simplest way to meet local queer people. Just turn up.
- Check the Klubb Homo date before you plan a weekend around it. It only runs a few times a year.
- Late August and early September (Pride) and big conferences at Conventum fill the central hotels.
Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
- Örebro Pride (the 2012–2018 association): dissolved in January 2019 and replaced by Nerike Pride.
- orebropride.se: now an unrelated blog, not the Pride organiser.
- "Gay bars on Stora Gatan" and "LGBTQ+ friendly" Stortorget bars: claims we couldn't source anywhere.
- Göta Canal: often wrongly placed in Örebro. It doesn't pass through the city.
A few words in Swedish

Preguntas frecuentes
