Last verified: November 2026. Montevideo has no gay hotel. We could not find a single gay-owned, men-only or clothing-optional place operating in the city in 2026. La Puerta Negra Gay Guest House still appears on booking sites, but under two different addresses (Durazno 1525 in older listings, José Benito Lamas in Pocitos in newer ones), and we could not confirm that it takes guests. Casa Sarandi, the small art deco guesthouse in Ciudad Vieja that gay travel blogs liked, has posted its own goodbye. The nearest men-only hotel in the country is Undarius at Punta Ballena, near Punta del Este, about two hours east. That leaves mainstream hotels, and in Uruguay that matters less than almost anywhere else in Latin America. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2013, an anti-discrimination law covers sexual orientation and gender identity, and front desks do not blink at two men asking for a double. So the real decision is location. The small scene runs along Calle Soriano and the streets either side of Avenida 18 de Julio, with a second pocket in Parque Rodó by the beach, and most of the nice hotels are somewhere else. This guide covers where to sleep so you can walk home, what each area is like at 3 am, the tax rule that saves non-residents money, the Marcha por la Diversidad, and getting back from the clubs.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

Montevideo is flat where it matters, so the walking times are reliable. The scene is a strip roughly 1.3 km long, parallel to Avenida 18 de Julio. At its west end, by Plaza Independencia, are Chains Pub at Soriano 827 (between Andes and Florida), Sauna Horus at Julio Herrera y Obes 1240 and the Cine Multisex on Paraguay. At its east end, at Soriano and Ejido, is Viajeros Disco at Soriano 1340, with Toronto Sauna at Tacuarembó 1531 a 5 min walk further on. Chains to Viajeros is 16–18 min on foot. Just to the west, in Ciudad Vieja, the men-only Dehiok is at 25 de Mayo and Juncal, 9–11 min from Chains. The second pocket is Parque Rodó, 20–22 min south-east of Viajeros. IL Tempo Disco fills up there at weekends, and Playa Ramírez and Playa de los Ingleses are the summer daytime spot. Zoba Club on Bulevar España in Pocitos is the outlier; we could not confirm it is still trading in 2026.

Sleep between Plaza Independencia and Ejido, within a block or two of 18 de Julio, and you can walk to everything except Parque Rodó. Sleep in Pocitos, Punta Carretas, Buceo or Carrasco and you are choosing the sea over the scene.

Centro, west end: Plaza Independencia and lower Soriano

The Esplendor by Wyndham Montevideo Cervantes at Soriano 868 is practically opposite Chains: 1–2 min door to door, 3–4 min to Horus, 4–6 min to the Cine Multisex and 10–12 min to Dehiok. It is a renovated historic building on a narrow street. Ask for an inside room on Fridays and Saturdays, when Chains closes late. The Radisson Montevideo Victoria Plaza is on Plaza Independencia itself. It is 1–2 min from the Cine Multisex, 3–4 min from Horus, 4–6 min from Chains and 8–10 min from Dehiok. This is the big business hotel with the casino, rated 4.6 from more than 11,000 Google reviews. It is also the safest-feeling address at 3 am, because the square is lit and there is always a taxi.

At night, 18 de Julio stays lit and has some traffic until late, but the side streets (Soriano, Colonia, San José) go quiet soon after the shops close. Walk along 18 de Julio and turn off only at your own block. Street robbery is the main crime risk in central Montevideo, as in most Latin American capitals, so keep your phone in your pocket on empty blocks.

Centro and Cordón, east end: Ejido and Tacuarembó

This is where the late crowd ends up, and it has one hotel in our listings. Hotel Klee on San José is 2–3 min from Viajeros, which its own Instagram says opens Thursday to Sunday from midnight to 6 am. Toronto Sauna, the city's largest, is 4–5 min away. Chains is 15–17 min west and Il Tempo 21–23 min south-east. The Klee is a plain, practical mid-range hotel rated 4.2 from more than 1,100 Google reviews. Plaza Libertad (also called Plaza Cagancha), where the Marcha por la Diversidad starts, is a few minutes away. The blocks around Ejido are a mix of offices, students and late-night kiosks, busy until about 1 am and quiet after that. The walk back from Viajeros at 6 am is short enough not to worry about.

Ciudad Vieja

Hotel Palacio at Bartolomé Mitre 1364 is in an early 20th-century building with an old lift and dated rooms that people choose on purpose. It is 3–4 min from Chains, 5–7 min from Horus and 6–8 min from Dehiok, which makes it the best-placed cheap bed for the west end. The old town is lively at lunchtime around the Mercado del Puerto, and around the bars on Bacacay and Bartolomé Mitre on weekend nights. Many streets nearer the port are deserted after dark, though. Walking back from Dehiok or Chains to Bartolomé Mitre is fine; anywhere further, take a taxi.

Barrio Sur and Parque Rodó

The ibis Montevideo Rambla at La Cumparsita 1473 is 11–13 min from Il Tempo on Gonzalo Ramírez and 13–15 min from Viajeros. That makes it the one hotel in our listings that works for both parts of the scene. The Rambla is right outside, Playa Ramírez is 24–26 min along it, and the hotel has a 24-hour bar. Barrio Sur is the home of candombe drumming. Expect drums in the street on some weekend evenings, and a lot of noise during Carnaval's Las Llamadas parade (check the dates before booking). At 3 am the walk from Il Tempo is mostly residential and quiet. A taxi costs little and is worth it if you are alone.

Pocitos and Punta Carretas

Pocitos is where Montevideo lives well: apartment towers, a long city beach, restaurants and cafés. HOTEL MONTEVIDEO on José Benito Lamas is rated 4.6. It is 22–24 min from Zoba Club (if it is open) and 24–26 min from Playa Ramírez. Cala Di Volpe Boutique Hotel on Parva Domus in Punta Carretas is 17–19 min along the Rambla from Playa Ramírez, the best-placed hotel in our listings for a beach day. Further east, the Hotel Costanero MGallery on Rambla República del Perú has an outdoor pool, a spa and river views. From any of these, the bars on Soriano are a taxi ride, not a walk. These neighbourhoods are quiet and generally calm at night; you will just be in a car at 3 am.

Buceo, Carrasco and Prado

The Palladium Business Hotel is in Buceo, by the World Trade Center towers and Montevideo Shopping. It is a business hotel, 6 km from Chains. The Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco and Spa is the restored 1920s Hotel Carrasco on the seafront, about 13 km from Chains and close to the airport. Hotel Cottage at Miraflores 1360 is also in Carrasco, a leafy, wealthy suburb of houses with no nightlife. Plan on a 25–35 min taxi each way to the scene. Cane B&B on Miguel Cané is in Prado, the old villa district north of the centre, about 5 km from both Toronto Sauna and Chains. It has a garden, an early 20th-century house and a 4.8 rating, and suits a slow trip rather than a nightlife one.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

As of November 2026 we could not verify any in Montevideo. The details:

    • La Puerta Negra Gay Guest House was a small gay-owned budget B&B with shared bathrooms. Older directories put it at Durazno 1525; current booking-site listings use an apartment address on José Benito Lamas in Pocitos. We found no 2025–2026 reviews showing it is open. Treat it as unverified and message the owners directly before paying anything.
    • Casa Sarandi Guesthouse was a three-room art deco guesthouse at Buenos Aires 558 in Ciudad Vieja that appeared in gay-friendly hotel lists. It has posted a farewell on its own Facebook page. Old booking-site pages may still show it, so do not book without written confirmation.
    • Undarius at Punta Ballena, between Piriápolis and Punta del Este, is gay-owned, men only and clothing-optional, with a pool. It is still listed for 2026, with the owner managing on site. It is in Maldonado, not Montevideo, about two hours away by car or bus. Confirm the season and opening months before booking.

In the city, the men-only spaces are venues, not hotels: Toronto Sauna and Sauna Horus are men's saunas, and Dehiok is a men-only cruising bar. None of the hotels in this guide sells day passes for gay events, and none is clothing-optional. Gay visitors actually stay at the Esplendor, the Radisson and the Klee for walking distance, or the Sofitel for a splurge. Several gay travel sites also recommend the Holiday Inn by Plaza Independencia (not in our listings) because it is central and has a good breakfast.

    Booking rules that bite

    • IVA at 0% for foreigners. Non-resident visitors pay no IVA (VAT) on rooms all year, at hotels and other places registered with the Ministry of Tourism. You must pay with a foreign-issued debit or credit card or a transfer from abroad. Uruguayan residents pay the 10% minimum rate. If you pay cash, or the hotel puts your card through as local, you may lose the exemption, so check the bill at check-out. In the 2025–26 summer (15 November 2025 to 30 April 2026) the exemption also covered restaurants and bars, which normally charge the 22% basic rate. When we checked, it had not been confirmed whether that will be renewed for the 2026–27 summer.
    • No separate city tourist tax that we could find in Montevideo. Some hotels quote in US dollars and some in pesos, so compare like with like.
    • ID registration. Hotels record a passport for every registered guest. Small hotels may ask a visitor to leave ID at reception, or may not allow unregistered guests in rooms. Policies vary and are rarely written down. Same-sex couples are protected by law, so this is about security, not sexuality.
    • The golden rule. Travelling as two, or expecting company? Book two guests from the start. The price difference is usually small and it avoids any conversation at the desk.
    • High season. January and February bring Argentine and Brazilian holidaymakers and Carnaval. Rates rise and the cheaper central hotels fill up. Semana de Turismo (Holy Week) runs 22–28 March 2027, when the whole country travels.
    • Smoking. Hotel rooms are non-smoking under Uruguay's national smoke-free law for enclosed spaces. Expect a cleaning charge if you ignore it; the amount varies by hotel.

The gay calendar and where to book for it

Marcha por la Diversidad (Montevideo Pride)

The Marcha por la Diversidad closes Uruguay's Diversity Month in September. It is a political march first and a party second. The 2026 march took place on Friday 25 September under the slogan "Vivir con dignidad, existir con orgullo". It gathered at Plaza Libertad (Plaza Cagancha) on 18 de Julio and marched to Plaza 1º de Mayo in front of the Palacio Legislativo, where a statement is read out and the party carries on. The 2025 march was on Friday 26 September. The 2027 date is TBA. The organising coalition had not announced it as of November 2026, though the march is traditionally held on the last Friday of September.

Book in Centro, as close to Plaza Libertad as you can. Hotel Klee is a few minutes' walk from the start and 2–3 min from Viajeros for the after-party. The Esplendor and the Radisson are 10–15 min from the start. September is low season, so rooms do not sell out the way they do in summer, but book a month ahead for the Friday and Saturday nights. Expect bus diversions and road closures in Centro from late afternoon on the day of the march.

    Carnaval and summer

Locals call Montevideo's Carnaval the longest in the world; it runs through January and February. The opening parade (Desfile Inaugural) goes down 18 de Julio, and Las Llamadas, the candombe parade, passes through Barrio Sur and Palermo, right by the ibis. We could not find 2027 dates in sources we could verify, so check with the city council (Intendencia) before booking. We could not confirm any gay Carnaval event. Summer is also beach season, with Playa Ramírez busy in the afternoons, and many gay locals head to Punta del Este and the Rocha coast in January.

We found no bear week, circuit party or regular gay festival in Montevideo with confirmed 2027 dates. Chains and Viajeros announce their theme nights week by week on Instagram.

    Getting back at 3 am

From the airport. Carrasco International (MVD) is on the eastern edge of the city. A taxi or fixed-price car (remise) from the arrivals desks to Centro takes about 30–40 min outside rush hour. Agree the fare before you get in, and check whether it is in pesos or dollars. Uber operates in Montevideo; check in the app whether airport pickups are available when you land. Buses run from the airport to the Tres Cruces bus terminal and on towards Centro. They are cheap but slow, and there are fewer of them late at night, so take a car if you land late. Sofitel and Hotel Cottage guests are much closer, roughly 10–15 min by car.

After the clubs. Clubs here open around midnight and close around 6 am, so 3 am is the middle of the night out. Night buses exist but are infrequent, and most people use Uber or a street taxi. Metered taxis are easy to hail on 18 de Julio and around Plaza Independencia and Plaza Libertad. A taxi between Chains and Viajeros, or from Viajeros to Il Tempo, is a short, cheap ride.

Walking. 18 de Julio is the safe main street of Centro. Soriano between Andes and Ejido is fine when the clubs are emptying and quiet in between. Take a car rather than walking alone late at night in Ciudad Vieja beyond Bartolomé Mitre and Bacacay, in the blocks near the port, and along the Rambla through Barrio Sur. Parque Batlle appears in some guides as a cruising area, but it is not somewhere to be after dark.

    Health, safety and the law

    • The law is on your side. Same-sex sex was decriminalised in 1934, and marriage and joint adoption have been legal since 2013. Anti-discrimination law covers sexual orientation and gender identity, and the 2018 Integral Trans Law allows people to change their legal gender without medical requirements. A hotel refusing a same-sex couple would be breaking the law.
    • PEP. If you need post-exposure prophylaxis, go to a hospital emergency department within 72 hours (the sooner the better). Hospital Maciel in Ciudad Vieja is the central public hospital. With travel insurance, the emergency service of a private health provider (mutualista) is usually faster. Ovejas Negras, the LGBTQ rights group based in Cordón, can point you to friendly sexual-health services.
    • PrEP. Bring enough for the whole trip. We could not confirm that visitors can easily get PrEP locally.
    • App dates. Meet first in a bar, not in your room. Tell someone where you are, keep your passport and spare phone or valuables in the safe, and do not let a stranger choose the venue. We found no specific 2025–2026 reports of app-date robberies targeting gay visitors, which is not the same as there being none.
    • Drugs. Possession of a small amount for personal use is not prosecuted, but a judge decides what counts as personal, and supplying drugs is a serious crime. Cannabis is legal only for registered Uruguayan citizens and residents, through pharmacies, clubs and home growing. Visitors cannot buy it legally.
    • Smoking. Banned in enclosed public spaces, including bars, clubs and hotel common areas.
    • Street crime. The main risk is opportunistic robbery on empty streets at night, not homophobia. Same-sex couples holding hands on 18 de Julio or in Pocitos attract little attention.
