Montevideo Pride / Marcha de la Diversidad

Montevideo's Marcha por la Diversidad is a political march more than a party. It closes Uruguay's Diversity Month on the last Friday of September and is run by the Coordinadora de la Marcha por la Diversidad, an autonomous coalition of social groups. In 2024 the coalition had 15 member organizations, including the youth wing of the PIT-CNT union federation and the FEUU university students' federation. Montevideo had a homosexual pride march as early as 1993. The current name and format date from 2005, and the march now takes on labour, anti-racist and feminist demands alongside LGBTQ+ ones. Wikipedia counts it as Uruguay's second-largest yearly demonstration, after the March of Silence.

The march sets off in the early evening from around Plaza Cagancha on Avenida 18 de Julio, follows Avenida del Libertador and ends at the Palacio Legislativo. Each year has its own slogan, such as 2024's "Hasta que los derechos sean hechos". It's free and open to anyone.

The last edition we could confirm was on Friday, September 26, 2025. Acting president Carolina Cosse waited for the marchers at the Legislative Palace, which was lit in rainbow colours. Turnout estimates don't agree. Reuters reported hundreds, the government said thousands, and left-wing outlets have described crowds of tens of thousands in past years. Nobody has published a count, so we can't confirm the 40,000 figure. We couldn't find coverage of the 2026 march either. If the tradition holds, the 2027 march will be on the last Friday of September.
