I am so excited to book here all summer long. We will absolutely be taking advantage of the campsites and all the amenities that are included. I went in to inquire about the place today and ended up going kayaking for an hour. They beat everyone’s prices by a mile! Everyone was extremely helpful both at the main office and at the tourism office.

There are parks in this province that exist because some municipal committee needed to check a box and budget a line item, and then there are parks that feel like they were placed exactly where they were supposed to be. Chiefswood falls into the second category, which is less common than it should be. I have been coming to Chiefswood since before I knew enough to appreciate it, which is the way most of us encounter the places that end up mattering to us. As a kid it was just "the park by the river." Now, several decades and considerably more context later, it's a piece of land that carries history in a way that most recreational spaces in Ontario simply don't, and that weight isn't heavy — it's present. There's a difference. The Grand River here is doing its best work. Wide enough to feel significant, calm enough most seasons to actually use. Camping is available and the sites aren't so aggressively manicured that you forget you're outdoors. There are people here who clearly just come to sit, which is an underrated park activity that not enough people pursue with sufficient commitment. The grounds around the historic Chiefswood homestead itself — birthplace of E. Pauline Johnson, who more people should know more about than they do — lend the park a depth that you won't find at some provincial campsite thrown up beside a highway. You're on Six Nations land, and the park makes you feel that in a way that's grounding rather than performative. I have never left Chiefswood in a bad mood. I've left tired, I've left sunburned, I've left carrying more firewood than was strictly advisable. But never in a bad mood. That's the benchmark.
