Gay Fresno: the honest 2026 guide

The honest summary: Fresno is California's fifth-largest city (about 557,000 people, state estimate for January 2025) and the capital of the San Joaquin Valley: farm country, hot summers and the gateway to Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia. It isn't a gay destination in the way San Francisco or Palm Springs are, but it has a real, long-running scene. There are three gay bars, a Pride that has run since 1991, one of the oldest LGBTQ+ film festivals in the US, and a cluster of community centres. Most of it sits in the Tower District, a walkable strip of bars, cafés and theatres around Olive Avenue.

Legal in one line: same-sex marriage has been legal in California since 28 June 2013, and the state's Unruh Civil Rights Act bans discrimination by sexual orientation and gender identity in hotels, bars, restaurants and every other business. The Human Rights Campaign scores Fresno 95 out of 100 on its Municipal Equality Index.

Where the scene is

The Tower District is Fresno's queer, arts and nightlife neighbourhood. It takes its name from the Tower Theatre, a 1939 Streamline Moderne cinema at Olive and Wishon Avenues, now owned by the city. The Pride parade runs down Olive Avenue, Reel Pride screens at the Tower, and Splash, the community centres on North Van Ness and the queer bookshop on Fulton Street are all a few minutes apart. This is where to spend an evening on foot.

East Belmont Avenue, about 5 km east of the Tower District, is the older bar strip. The Red Lantern and Alibi are a block apart there. You'll want a car or a rideshare: it isn't a walking area at night.

Downtown has most of the services: the Fresno EOC LGBTQ+ Resource Center, the county's free HIV testing, the new Fresno Inclusive clinic and The Queer Collective, plus the convention centre hotels. Fulton Street, once a pedestrian mall, reopened to cars in 2017.

Gay bars

  • Splash Fresno, 644 E Olive Ave (Tower District). The main gay bar and dance club, open since June 2021: two dance floors, two bars, a patio, video screens, karaoke and drag. Travel Gay lists hours of 4pm to 2am on weekdays, from 2pm on Saturday and from noon on Sunday. Regulars include the Rainbow Mixer social on first-Sunday afternoons and Imperial Dove Court's drag fundraiser show on second Sundays. Its old website domain no longer works, so check Instagram (@splashfresno) for the week's programme.
  • The Red Lantern, 4618 E Belmont Ave. Fresno's oldest gay bar, open since 1976; it celebrated its 50th anniversary in September 2026. A neighbourhood bar with a stage, karaoke, a small dance floor and a smoking patio. Central Valley Queer Line Dancing runs there free on the first Friday of the month, and leather nights come round several times a year. Listed hours are 6pm to 2am daily.
  • Alibi, 4538 E Belmont Ave. A small mixed gay bar a block from The Red Lantern, with free pool, karaoke, a patio and a parking lot. Travel Gay lists it, and recent reviews describe it as a safe place for LGBTQ+ people. Listed hours are 6pm to 2am, Monday to Saturday.

Two mainstream places are worth knowing. Moses McQueen's (634 Van Ness Ave, downtown), which opened in April 2026, has run drag brunches roughly monthly. Vibez Lounge (724 E Olive Ave), a few doors from Splash, was a Reel Pride 2026 venue and has hosted LGBTQ+ singles nights. Neither is a gay bar.

There's no regular Latin queer night at the bars, as far as we could find. Fresno's Latine queer programming is community-run, mostly through Casita Feliz (below).

Saunas, cruising and beaches

Fresno has no gay sauna or bathhouse, and we found none in Clovis or the surrounding towns. We don't list outdoor cruising areas: none had two current sources, and public sex is illegal in California. Fresno is inland, so there's no beach; the nearest gay bathhouses and beaches are in the Bay Area and Los Angeles, three hours or more away.

Shops

Judging by the Cover is a queer- and Latine-owned independent bookstore. It finished moving from Chinatown to 617 N Fulton St in the Tower District in July 2026, and stocks a lot of LGBTQ+, BIPOC and small-press titles. It's a good daytime stop between the Tower Theatre and Olive Avenue.

Community centres and support

  • Fresno EOC LGBTQ+ Resource Center, 1900 Mariposa St, Suite 113, downtown. Peer support, case management, housing help, name and gender-marker change help, a clothing closet, youth and trans groups, and free STI testing on Tuesday afternoons. Older listings still show 1252 Fulton St. Call or text (559) 325-4527.
  • Casita Feliz, North Van Ness Ave, Tower District. A Latine LGBTQ+ centre with support groups, Trans Vida, a Queer Mercado market and an outdoor Queer Movie Night on second Fridays.
  • Fresno Inclusive & The Queer Collective, 3032–3034 Tulare St, downtown. An LGBTQ+-focused clinic (weekdays 9am to 5pm) and a community space next door, both opened in early 2026, with book clubs, yoga, karaoke and PFLAG dinners.
  • PFLAG Fresno meets on the second Sunday of the month, 2pm to 4pm, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1343 E Barstow Ave.
  • Fresno Spectrum Center, 2101 N Fruit Ave, a small community space with irregular, event-based hours.
  • Gender Alchemy runs trans meet-ups and a monthly potluck, and Imperial Dove Court de Fresno, the local drag court, organises the Splash shows and leather balls. Neither has a public venue; follow them on Instagram.

Sexual health

  • Fresno County Public Health, 1221 Fulton St: free rapid HIV testing, anonymous on Wednesday mornings and confidential on Wednesday afternoons and Thursdays. Call (559) 600-6404.
  • Planned Parenthood Fulton Street, 650 N Fulton St: walk-in HIV testing and PrEP on a sliding scale, including for people without insurance.

Pride and events

  • Fresno Rainbow Pride is on the first Saturday of June. The parade runs along Olive Avenue in the Tower District in the morning, then the festival moves to Fresno City College. The first street parade, in 1991, lasted about ten minutes and drew a Ku Klux Klan counter-protest. The 36th edition was on 6 June 2026, and the Fresno State Collegian put the 2025 crowd at about 22,000. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.
  • Reel Pride, Fresno's LGBTQ+ film festival, runs over a long weekend in September at the Tower Theatre. The 37th festival was on 17–20 September 2026.
  • For everything else, the LGBTQ Fresno community calendar (lgbtqfresno.com) is the best single listing: drag shows, line dancing, support groups, PFLAG and Pride events. Our events tab pulls from it.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

  • FAB Fresno, the Tower District club that opened in 2015, closed after its New Year's Eve 2023 party. The new owner of the site said the replacement would not be an LGBTQ+ club.
  • Club Legends closed around July 2020.
  • North Tower Circle closed around 2015, and The Express before that.
  • The Den, a gay bar for about 40 years, burned down in September 2010.
  • Hotel Fresno, the 1912 building downtown, reopened in 2024 as apartments, not a hotel. The former downtown Radisson on Van Ness Avenue is closed and up for sale.

Politics: what to expect

Fresno sits in a politically mixed region, and that shows. The city raised the Pride flag at City Hall in June 2025. The Fresno County Board of Supervisors, on the other hand, voted 3–2 in May 2026 to bar the county library from taking part in Pride, and in June 2026 declared June "Traditional Nuclear Family Month". Neighbouring Clovis flies only the US, California and city flags on city property. In summer 2026 the rainbow display at the Big Red Church (First Congregational, an Open and Affirming church on Van Ness Boulevard) was vandalised twice. None of this affects day-to-day travel. The Tower District is relaxed and openly queer, and hotels and businesses are bound by California law.

Where to stay

None of Fresno's hotels is a gay hotel. They're mainstream places, listed so you can pick a base. There's no hotel in the Tower District itself.

Practical tips

  • Getting here: Fresno Yosemite International (FAT) is about 6 km north-east of downtown, with nonstops to cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Denver, Dallas, Phoenix and Seattle, plus Guadalajara. Amtrak San Joaquins trains stop at the Santa Fe Depot downtown. High-speed rail isn't running yet; station works only started in 2026.
  • Getting around: you'll want a car or rideshare. The FAX Q rapid bus runs along Blackstone Avenue, near the Tower District, every 10 to 15 minutes by day, but service thins out late at night, when the bars close.
  • Heat and fog: July and August regularly pass 38°C (100°F); Pride 2025 was held in near-100°F heat. In winter, tule fog can cut visibility on Highways 99 and 41 to almost nothing.
  • National parks: Kings Canyon is about 100 km east and Sequoia about 120 km; Yosemite Valley is about 150 km north via Highway 41.

Preguntas frecuentes

Yes, three. Splash Fresno (644 E Olive Ave, Tower District) is the main gay bar and dance club, with drag, karaoke and two dance floors. The Red Lantern (4618 E Belmont Ave) has been a gay bar since 1976, and Alibi, a small mixed bar with pool and karaoke, is a block away at 4538 E Belmont Ave.

The Tower District, around Olive and Wishon Avenues, is Fresno's queer, arts and nightlife neighbourhood. Splash, the Tower Theatre (home of Reel Pride), the Pride parade route, the Casita Feliz centre and the queer-owned Judging by the Cover bookstore are all there. The older gay bars are on East Belmont Avenue, about 5 km east.

Fresno Rainbow Pride is held on the first Saturday of June: a morning parade along Olive Avenue in the Tower District, then a festival at Fresno City College. The 36th edition was on 6 June 2026. The 2027 date had not been announced in October 2026; check fresnorainbowpride.com.

No. We found no gay sauna or bathhouse in Fresno, Clovis or anywhere else in the Central Valley in October 2026. The nearest are in the Bay Area and Los Angeles, about three hours or more away by car.

Fresno County Public Health offers free rapid HIV testing at 1221 Fulton St on Wednesdays and Thursdays (559-600-6404). Planned Parenthood at 650 N Fulton St takes walk-ins for HIV testing and PrEP on a sliding scale. The Fresno EOC LGBTQ+ Resource Center, 1900 Mariposa St, Suite 113, offers free STI testing on Tuesday afternoons.

Mostly, with caveats. California law protects LGBTQ+ people in hotels, bars and every other business, the city scores 95 on the Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index, and it raised the Pride flag at City Hall in 2025. County politics are more conservative: in 2026 the Board of Supervisors barred the county library from Pride and declared June "Traditional Nuclear Family Month". The Tower District itself is relaxed and openly queer.
