Palm Springs Pride is among the largest LGBTQ+ Pride events in the western United States, drawing 110,000 people to Palm Canyon Drive for a parade and two-day street festival on the first full weekend of November. The timing reflects the desert's logic: November in Palm Springs is warm and sunny with ideal conditions for outdoor events, while the June timing common to most American Prides would place the festival in the extreme heat of the desert summer. The parade runs along Palm Canyon Drive through the heart of downtown Palm Springs, with floats, marching bands, community groups, and elected officials reflecting the city's unusual status as a municipality with a high proportion of LGBTQ+ residents and officials. The street festival following the parade draws vendors, food stalls, performance stages, and the full social gathering of the community. Palm Springs Pride is one of the few Pride events in America where the gay community is hosting the event in a city that is in meaningful ways already theirs — the concentration of gay-owned businesses, gay-elected officials, and gay residents creates a Pride event with a genuinely different atmosphere from those held in cities where the gay community is a minority fighting for recognition.
