Muelle 51 y 52 — Ribera del West Village

Between roughly 1970 and the late 1990s, the derelict shipping piers at the west end of Christopher Street — Piers 45, 46, 51 and 52 — were the anchor of a public queer nightlife that had no admission fee, no dress code, and no closing time. The "pier queens" were mostly homeless queer youth, disproportionately Black and Latinx, disproportionately trans, who lived and socialised on the piers because the West Village bars and the coastal parks farther north wouldn't let them in. The piers were the setting for Marlon Riggs's *Tongues Untied* (1989) and much of Jennie Livingston's *Paris Is Burning* (1990). The vogueing houses documented in *Paris Is Burning* — House of Xtravaganza, House of LaBeija, House of Ninja — held informal balls on the pier planking. Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera's STAR House sheltered dozens of the pier kids in the early 1970s. Hudson River Park took over the piers in the late 1990s and rebuilt them as manicured public parkland; the pier queens were displaced by planters and skateboarders. There is now no formal plaque at Piers 51 and 52 acknowledging the queer nightlife they held. What remains is the geography itself: the pilings, the river view, the length of concrete where nightlife happened, and — since 2023 — a small interpretive marker at the Pier 45 entrance. The piers are free public parkland, open dawn to 1 AM. Come at dusk when the light hits the Jersey shore. This is where the Village's history exits its bar rooms and becomes public geography; worth the ten-minute walk west from Stonewall.
