Mutschmann's has been a leather and fetish bar in Schöneberg since the late 1970s — predating most of the venues that now make up Berlin's leather scene. The bar occupies a narrow space on Martin-Luther-Straße with a main bar level and a basement that has served as a darkroom for decades. The crowd is gay male, leather-oriented, and includes a significant proportion of men for whom Mutschmann's is simply their local — the bar they have been coming to for 20 or 30 years. Regular fetish nights rotate through themes: uniform, rubber, naked, leather. The atmosphere is the anti-spectacle: nobody is performing for visitors, the regulars know each other, and the space functions as a community institution that happens to be open to the public rather than a business designed to attract tourists. For leather-identified gay men visiting Berlin, Mutschmann's is one of the venues that represents the continuity of the scene across decades — a bar that predates Berghain and will likely outlast it.
